For those filming in a dingy basement, lighting isn’t always the best. If lighting is your biggest enemy, the best webcam for Skype is the Logitech HD Webcam C525. Its automatic light correction does its best work when conditions aren’t the greatest. You just have to look past its resolution of 720p.

Why We Like It – Logitech HD Webcam C525

For those struggling under lighting conditions, the Logitech HD Webcam C525 can fix that up with its auto-light correction when harsh lighting or dim settings strike.

Pros
  • 8MP optical sensor
  • 16:9 widescreen view
  • Auto-light correction is great under harsh lighting
Cons
  • Limited to 720p
  • Lacks a privacy shutter

Type, Lens, Size & Weight

There’s a powerful 8MP optical sensor underneath the lens, which takes great pictures. Compared to the Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920, the C525 is quite bulky with its dimensions of 8.25 x 3 x 6 inches and weight of 9.4-oz.

Resolution & Display

When you’re in video calls or recording, you’ll be limited to 720p. While 1080p would be ideal, 720p is still considered “HD video capture.” On the bright side, its auto-light correction is top-notch for the price, especially when under harsh lighting. You can further fiddle with your settings via Logitech video effects.

Tripod & Image Stability

Image stability will definitely benefit from a dedicated tripod. The clip-on design isn’t always trustworthy as it tends to loosen its group from general use, a feature that also plagues the Microsoft LifeCam.

Optical Zoom, Microphone, Audio & Storage

The only way to access optical zoom is through Logietch webcam software, like Logitech Vid HD, which is free. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have internal storage. Another gripe is the microphone picks up a fair amount of static and white noise. You’re best off using an external mic.

Value

The Logitech C525 is a bit overpriced when considering its performance. You can get the same 720p output from the Logitech C270 Widescreen HD Webcam, with only a hit to the optical sensor, at half the price. You do miss out on better light correction, too. So, the question is: is a $30 difference worth it for better light control and optical sensor? It depends on your needs.

Logitech HD Webcam C525 Wrap Up

Taking into consideration performance, design, and pricing, the Logitech HD Webcam C525 has a few niche benefits. It isn’t for quality snobs, that’s for sure—but it does provide value to those in poor lighting situations. And a 16:9 aspect ratio does improve viewing experience. If you can look past 720p, you won’t be disappointed.
