Fastest Electric Scooters – Considering Two Wheels for [year]?

The speediest city commute and the most stylish entrance? Yes, please!

With time often being in short supply, its not surprising that more and more people are opting to take their commute on two wheels. A faster and much more fun alternative to walking, the high-speed best electric scooter is the way to commute in [year].

Wondering what to consider when buying a high-speed electric scooter?

We wanted to answer some of the questions you might be asking in your search for your perfect electric scooter.

Is it for me?

Be careful when considering who will be using the scooter. Is it for your ten-year-old? Then you may want to steer clear of some of the fastest adult electric scooters, whose top speeds may be too much for a younger child to handle. Similarly, if it’s going to be getting you to work on the daily, you might not want to be bent over the smaller handlebars of one that’s designed for a much shorter clientele!

What can I expect to pay?

For a low-end model that goes shorter distances between charges, at slower

speeds you can expect to pay between $250 and $450. It really depends on your needs. If you require more reliability, better durability, longer distances and a smoother ride, you can realistically expect to invest closer to $1,000 in one of the fastest adult electric scooters on the market. For example of something in-between, the Segway Ninebot ES2 2 Wheel Electric Scooter can travel up to 15 miles on a single charge with a max speed of 15mph and is priced at almost $600. But buying something faster and higher quality like the WideWheel model really is a sound investment that will make your commute easier and more enjoyable.

How powerful is it?

Now you’ve set a budget, you need to think about how much power you need.

Most standard models of fast electric scooter, such as the XIAOMI M365 provide top speeds of 15mph. Which is great and still quicker than walking. But what if you could get there even faster? The latest dual motor model WideWheel does a top speed of 25mph, with some customers reporting even faster speeds. This places this latest model amongst the top performers in the fast electric scooter commuting industry.

With a dual, high powered 500W motor, the WideWheel offers enough acceleration and torque to tackle upwards of 25% hill gradients, giving it maximum terrain versatility. If you need speed no matter what the incline, the 1000w electric scooter is the way forward.

But don’t take our word for it, do your own research! Have a look at these great comparisons to figure out what the best electric scooters for commuting are.

How can I get maximum comfort and durability?

What’s the point of super-speed without comfort too? We believe

that there are lots of variables that make up the best ride on a fast electric scooter for adults who need to consider their daily commute.

One of those is undoubtedly wheel size. Fortunately, this is a unique feature of the WideWheel model. It’s extra wide 4inch wheels mean greater stability at higher speeds. Beginner or pro, wider wheels make for a more manageable, comfortable and enjoyable ride.

Unlike the closest competitor in speed, the Speedway Mini, and its narrow air-filled tyres, the WideWheel boasts wheels made of rubber, urethane foam and aluminium. The sturdy materials and airless tyre make for a durable wheel with little maintenance required to keep them from providing the fastest, smoothest ride. You also don’t have to worry about getting a flat tyre!

Earlier, we mentioned terrain versatility, and this is where the WideWheel excels. Whilst it isn’t an off-roading scooter, the front and rear swingarm suspension offers excellent protection from bumps and cracks in the pavement, maximising your comfort. So you can focus less on avoiding them and more on enjoying your commute.

The WideWheel electric scooter also has an improved braking system in the form of a powerful rear disc brake. This might not necessarily provide comfort, but it does mean you can really concentrate on having fun, without worrying whether you’re going to stop in time!

Going the distance

Whether you’ll be using your high-speed electric scooter for fun or for the serious business of getting to w

ork on time, you need to consider the distance you can travel in between charges. Do you want to be bothered carrying your charger around with you? Or would you prefer to invest in something with a higher quality battery that will get you there and back again? The WideWheel uses a lithium ion battery that provides a completely realistic and repeatedly proven range of 20 miles.

Do you need to be able to sling your scooter into a packed train? Or can you slot it into your car boot for the rest of your commute? Either way, you’ll need an easy folding mechanism and a durable design. The WideWheel electric scooter folds away easily, including the handlebars. Although it isn’t the lightest model available, it is very sturdily made with its die-cast production method and flawless design, which more than makes up for what it carries in weight.

What about the law?

With electric scooters being the future of commuting, it unfortunately means that US law needs to catch up. At the moment, except for New York, most states consider the use of them similar to that of a bicycle, as do most countries across Europe. No registration, license or insurance is necessary. So, if it’s in good working order with the likes of its brakes, suspension, lights, horn and tyres you’re good to go.

Some countries require the rider to wear a helmet and others have certain acceptable speed limits in busy parts of the city. It’s always a good idea to double check what’s acceptable in your jurisdiction and whether there are any hard and fast rules.

That being said, as long as you’re riding responsibly and with due care, it is very unlikely that you’ll get stopped by law enforcement.

What accessories can I get?

If we’ve helped you to make your decision, you might be wondering what extras you can get? On sites like fluid you can get add-on seats for comfortability to a detachable headlight for those winter afternoons and late-night rides, there are plenty of accessories to make your high-speed electric scooter experience the best it can be.

Still not convinced? Why not rent one and find out if it’s for you?

Lately, plenty of cities across the US and Europe are joining in with the hype and rightly so. You can now hire an electric scooter by the hour. As well as a bit of fun, hiring a scooter first lets you find out if it’s for you before you invest in your own

However, most rental scooters are slow and can get expensive if you’re going to be using them frequently. It may be a good idea for an hour of sightseeing, but for the more serious commuter investing in something quality, like the WideWheel, lets you experience exhilaration, style and comfort on your commute every day.

Razor Ripstik Ripster Review
One of the best caster boards out there.

The Razor Ripstik Ripster (Try saying that five times fast) is made of high tech polymer with removable deck plates. It features slip-resistant concave deck platforms and high-grade urethane wheels. It is also shorter than the original version. Skate in style anywhere you want with this bad boy and all eyes will be on you.

Pros:

  • 360-degree inclined caster trucks
  • ABEC5 bearing casters
  • Great design

Cons:

  • Some might like a larger board

Razor Ripstik Ripster Build Quality And Design

The amazing design of the Ripstik caster board is self-evident. This caster board catches the eye and doesn’t let go. Just look at that deck platform. It looks fast, sleek and modern with that concave deck design. If you do a lot of tricks and stunts on the original RipStik Classic or Ripstik Brights, you’ll up your game with this skateboard. It has great carving ability and a nice kick tail and nose.

The slip-resistant concave deck and steel rubber padded torsion bar are durable enough to stand up to whatever you dish out and also water resistant. The ABEC5 bearing choice was also a good one on this model. It comes in red, blue and black color choices, all of which look stunning. The shorter wheelbase is perfect for riders with a narrower stance, for tricks or for new riders to easily get on and gain confidence.

The Razor Ripstik Ripster weighs in at just 4.5 pounds and has a rider weight capacity of about 143 pounds so both kids and adults can get on.

Razor Ripstik Ripster Performance

When it comes to performance, the Razor Ripster Castor Board is definitely an upgrade from the classic version. The board isn’t the only thing that was downsized. Those urethane wheels have been changed from 76mm wheels to 66mm.

Classic ripstiks are cool and all, but these changes really do make doing tricks easier. I found that I had good foot control and increased foot control means better tricks. And this board is a super smooth ride over various terrains like the sidewalk, gravel or on the pavement.

Any bumps you encounter are absorbed nicely so you don’t feel them. Super nice trucks and pivoting deck. As for speed, it’s hard to say if it is easier to go faster than on the classic version, but the Ripstick Ripster design does allow you to really get going. So make sure you are wearing your safety equipment. At least wear a helmet and elbow pads for protective gear.

For many, it will likely take some time to learn how to use this electric caster board properly, before they are doing snowboardlike carving, but it’s worth the time investment. The cool thing about that concave pivoting deck is that it lets you turn in any direction at any time you want.

You may also want to read a review on Elos skateboards.

Bottom Line

It turns out that the Razor Ripstik Ripster is every bit as cool as it looks. That shortened concave board with its 66mm high grade urethane wheels, high-performance ABEC-5 bearing casters, Kick nose and tail, pivoting deck, 360-degree caster trucks, and lightweight is ideal for doing more tricks and for helping the smaller kids learn to ride. And I can tell you firsthand that it really is a dramatic improvement.

And the fact that they delivered such a performer along with an amazing style is what makes this caster board a serious winner. The removable deck plates mean you can even buy replacement faceplates and traction pads for this Ripstick caster board. No wonder razor Ripstik caster boards are so popular. Ride the Ripstik baby! Get yourself a Ripstik bright caster board and experience the fun for yourself.

Razor makes a lot of cool boards and other vehicles like the Razor Ripsurf, the DLX mini and more, but this is one of their standout products.

How To Make An Electric Scooter – Down And Dirty DIY

You can actually make your own best electric scooter.

Did you ever wonder if it were possible to build your own electric scooter? It’s not as difficult as you might think, although it does help to have some basic DIY experience first. You really can build a cool do it yourself scooter that will let you ride around the neighborhood. This How To Make Electric Scooter guide will help. It may not be the best foldable electric scooter for adults, but it is fun. If you don’t want to DIY it, take a look at the Urb E folding scooter review.

This article is intended to give you the basic steps that you will need in order to get this project done and have a road-worthy motorized e-scooter beneath your feet as you are flying down the road. This is down and dirty. It’s not a polished top of the line scooter with super speed from a brand name electric scooter company.  But you’ll end up with something that might be even more fun than the best knee scooter. So let’s get to it.

How To Make Electric Scooter In A Few Easy Steps

The first thing you’ll need is a decent frame. Why build one from scratch? Just get your hands on an old kick scooter. Any size will do. Kick scooters are everywhere. Just make sure that you will fit on it comfortably.

Next, you will have to locate a battery-powered electric DC engine. Just make sure that the motor has the proper torque that you will need. I suggest at least 50-watt motor since you want it to propel you, but you don’t want the vehicle to go too fast and be dangerous. Safety first. You will also want to track down at least four 12-volt lead-acid batteries for the power. For both of these items, an electronics store is a good place to start.

Other items that you will need include a DC power controller, a bicycle chain, bicycle chain tool, a lever switch and some wires.

You Really Can Make An Electric Scooter

Now we are getting into the heart of this project. The next step is to locate the engine’s crankshaft. This is the metal cylinder that sticks out from the motor. When the engine is running, this part turns. You will need to attach a sprocket onto the crankshaft using a bolt and then attach another one onto the scooter’s rear wheel axle.

Next, the engine is going to be attached to the deck of the e-scooter. You can use some heavy-duty straps, either bolting it to the deck or using a strong glue, as long as it is secure. Just make sure that both sprockets match up.

Now the engine needs to connect to the scooter’s back wheel. You are going to use a bicycle chain that will connect the motor-sprocket to the sprocket on the wheel. If the chain is too big, you can use a universal chain tool to shorten it. In some cases, you may need to modify the housing around the scooter wheel so that the chain can move freely.

Almost Finished With Your DIY Scooter

We are almost through the steps needed to learn how to make an electric scooter. Now we just need to connect a switch that will turn the motor on and off. To do this you will need to use a power controller. Just connect the motor to the power controller and wire the controller to a switch. A lever switch is your best choice. You can have the wiring run up the scooter’s handlebars, keeping them in place with some zip-ties. Then secure the switch to the handlebars and now you can start and stop the engine.

Your electric scooter is ready to ride.

Extra Tips

Since all scooters and motors vary in size and shape, some adjustments will need to be made. You may have to remove some housing near the wheel, etc. It is not an exact science. And that is part of the fun. It’s kind of like an electric moped and it beats an old fashioned bike.

Be Safe On Your New Electric scooter

Always be safe. This electric scooter for adults will only stop when you shut off the electric motor. So it is a good idea to make sure that you have some hand brakes so that you can slow down by a few miles per hour before hitting the switch. It may not be the fastest electric scooter, but it’s still best to be safe. Braking should be minimal so that you don’t wear down the battery by holding the brake too long.

Now that you know how to make an electric scooter,  always wear a helmet and with this build, maybe keep to the sidewalks and stay off the road. This may not be a scooter for your daily commute, but the fun is in building electric vehicles like this one. Instead of using it to commute, it is probably better used for short trips. And kids should ride one of these professional motorized electric scooters. The Razor Pocket Mod is a good choice.

WHY WE LIKE IT: This 50cc scooter is a great choice for anyone who needs speed and convenience. With excellent gas mileage and high top speeds—both provided by a powerful engine—this scooter is perfect for students on a budget. It’s also durable, but at the sacrifice of an unimpressive look.

The engine features an automatic transmission, as well. It also features a durable design that will hold up at the top speeds. In fact, the scooter is so smooth that you likely won’t notice any difference between driving at low speeds and driving at high speeds. The ATM50 is a street legal vehicle due to its powerful engine, and you’ll need to get it registered at the DMV before you start driving it on the roads. It’s also environmentally friendly with high fuel efficiency, if you’re concerned about those aspects of driving a gas scooter around.

This TaoTao 50cc scooters offers a lot of storage options for the driver, which is great if you need it, but unobtrusive if you don’t. In the front, you have a simple tray-style storage where you can put your phone, wallet and other small items. You get more storage under the seat for bags or books. You also get a free rear trunk included in your purchase, which is lockable and holds even more medium-sized items. While there is theoretically enough space to fit two adults on the seat of the ATM-50, the weight capacity of up to 225 pounds limits you. This is a pretty standard weight capacity, but if you exceed it, you’ll find that the scooter struggles going up hills.”

 #2  TaoTao ATM50-A1 – Fastest 50cc Scooter

WHY WE LIKE IT: This is TaoTao’s top selling 50cc scooter, and for good reason. It gives you a powerful engine, room for an extra passenger, high top speeds and CARB compliance. If you’re looking for a fast and reliable motor scooter with extra room, this scooter fits the ticket.

Pros
  • CARB compliant
  • Double seat
  • Fast and durable
Cons
  • Owner’s manual difficult to read
  • Hard to adjust mirrors
  • Smaller fuel capacity

The TaoTao ATM50-A1 is one of the fastest scooters to buy on our list, with top speeds ranging up to 35 miles per hour. This is also a gas fully automatic street legal scooter, making for an even smoother ride at top speeds. It’s durable enough to withstand top speeds, as well, which makes this good for longer trips on faster roads. As with most of the other scooter mopeds on our list, the TaoTao ATM50-A1 is completely street legal, meaning you can use it on most local roads. However, you won’t be able to take this scooter on the interstate since it isn’t fast enough. The ATM50-A1 is also CARB compliant, meaning you can use it in California without fear of getting in trouble with the state. Make sure you register the vehicle properly before using it on the roads.

You have plenty of storage options with this TaoTao 50cc gas scooter. Much like other TaoTao scooters, you can store your things in two separate places on the ATM50-A1. First, you’ll have storage under your seat. Next, each TaoTao scooter comes with a rear trunk where you can store more items, if necessary. This trunk is lockable and is made of durable materials. The TaoTao ATM50-A1 can handle up to 225 pounds of weight during operation. The scooter can carry up to two adults, but you might find you can only achieve slower speeds with the added weight. While this is a pretty good weight capacity for a single rider, it can be difficult to stay under that limit with two adults riding at the same time.

#3  TaoTao EVO 50 – Fastest 50cc Scooter with no mods

WHY WE LIKE IT: This Tao is powerful, sleek and street legal. Even with a powerful 50cc engine, this sporty scooter still offers great fuel efficiency and a large fuel tank. While you can only use this on local roads, it still provides you a good amount of mobility and power to get around. We also like how easy to ride the EVO 50 is.

Pros
  • Plenty of item storage
  • High gas mileage and fuel capacity
  • Street legal
Cons
  • Needs to be assembled
  • Drum brakes on rear wheel
  • Requires a valid driver’s license

While this quality scooter doesn’t rival 150cc scooters in terms of speed, the EVO 50 still gives you enough speed to travel on local roads. Topping out at 25 miles per hour, this 50cc scooter focuses on reliability over thrills and speed. This scooter’s reliable engine gives you excellent gas mileage of up to 100 miles per gallon, which is a huge cost saver. Like other 50cc scooters on this list, the EVO 50 is completely street legal. Remember that you’ll need to register the scooter appropriately with your state’s motor vehicle agency in order to use it legally on the roads.

The TaoTao EVO 50 offers plenty of storage in two different places. First, you’ll get a bunch of storage underneath the extra-long seat. The scooter also comes with an included rear storage trunk with even more storage space. This 50cc scooter model can hold up to 300 pounds, which is much higher than all of the scooters on our list. This is good news for you, especially if you want to travel with more than one person. The extra-long seat gives you plenty of room for two adults, which is having the extra weight capacity is even better overall.

#4  Renegade TPGS-805 – Best 50cc Scooter with affordable price

WHY WE LIKE IT: This 50cc scooter is reliable and sturdy, but not quite as fast as other scooters on our list. However, it’s CARB approved and gives you excellent gas mileage, which still makes it great scooter to use for local commuters. Throw in some extra storage options and you’ve got a great vehicle on your hands.

Pros
  • Powerful 4-stroke engine
  • CARB approved
  • Lots of storage options
Cons
  • Rear drum brakes
  • Not as fast as other scooters
  • Assembly required

This reliable 50cc scooter only reaches top speeds of around 25 miles per hour, which is slower than most of the top scooters on our list. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean this is an under-performing scooter. The engine is still powerful enough to get you up and down most hills and it handles well on most local roads. Remember that you won’t be able to take this on a freeway or highway, but it serves its purpose of an easy daily commuter vehicle. Like most 50cc scooters, the Renegade TPGS-805 is a fully automatic street legal scooter and approved for use on local roads. While you won’t be able to use it on high-speed roads like the interstate or local highways, you can still drive it without any problem around your neighborhood or to and from work. This scooter is also CARB approved for California, and you can use it legally within California state lines. You have three storage options on this Renegade scooter, which is more than most other 50cc moped scooters. First, you can store smaller items directly underneath the console in a tray built into the steering column. This is perfect for your wallet or phone.

You also get storage underneath your seat and in an included rear trunk. The storage under the seat offers more room than the trunk, but the trunk can be locked for secure storage options. This gas automatic scooter can carry up to 225 pounds, which is more than adequate for most adult users who will drive it. Like other scooters on the list, you can also fit more than one adult on the extra-long seat, but you might find troubles getting up to top speeds if you’re over the 225-pound capacity. The Honda Ruckus is another durable and reliable 50cc moped scooter, since it uses an easy automatic transmission and has a sturdy steel frame. It’s a quality scooter but a bit on the pricier side.

#5  TaoTao Thunder – Fastest 50cc Scooter with No Mods

WHY WE LIKE IT: This scooter is reliable and sturdy, but can only reach speeds up to 30 miles per hour, which isn’t as fast as the top scooters on the list. However, it’s CARB approved for use in CA and gives you superb gas mileage, which is perfect for local commuters. With the added storage compartment under the seat, this 50cc gas scooter is an excellent choice.

Pros
  • Street legal
  • CARB approved
  • Electric start with backup kick start
Cons
  • Slower than some 50cc scooters
  • Rear brakes are drum brakes
  • Back foot pegs too small

This 50cc scooter only reaches top speeds of around 30 miles per hour, although it’s rated at 35 MPH by the manufacturer. While this is faster than other scooters on the list, you might be disappointed in the fact that you can’t take this on the highway. The Thunder features a 4-stroke engine that can get you over most hills with ease, though, and it performs really well on local roads. Like most of the 50cc scooters on our list, the TaoTao Thunder is completely street legal and approved for use on local roads only. You can’t take it on high-speed freeways or highways because the speed just isn’t there, but you’ll at least be able to make it to the store and back.

Remember that you must have this scooter legally registered before taking it out for a spin. This scooter is also CARB approved for California, and you can use it legally within California state lines. The TaoTao Thunder features a roomy storage compartment directly under the seat, where you can store larger items with ease. It also comes with a handy storage trunk that attaches to the back of the vehicle. This gas automatic scooter can handle weights of up to 250 pounds, which should be enough for most adult single riders. However, be careful of adding passengers to the scooter during your rides. If you exceed that weight limit, you’ll likely experience decreased performance and power. There’s also the TaoTao CY50A 50cc Scooter, which reaches a maximum speed of 35 MPH and is good for beginner-level riders. It features front and rear hand brakes, fully automatic twist throttle, and rear trunk.

Street Legal vs Off Road

What’s the difference between street legal 50cc scooters and off road 50cc scooters? For starters, they’re both made very differently. Street legal scooters tend to have a more aerodynamic build with overall construction focused on long-term comfort. Off road scooters are focused on durability and power.

To choose between them, simply consider how and where you’ll use your scooter. If you’re looking for a commuter vehicle, you’ll definitely need a street legal model. If you’re looking for fun in the outdoors, an off road scooter will likely work better.

How We Reviewed the Scooters

  1. Top Speed
Faster is Better  Top speed should always be a main consideration when you’re looking to purchase a vehicle. While all the reliable 50cc scooters we reviewed here feature the same size of engine, they can vary widely in top speeds. Check the roads you’ll use with your scooters and make sure the top speeds of the scooter you purchase are sufficient for your needs.
  2. Street Legality – Check Your State Laws
Your state creates the laws around street legality, but most states require scooter engines to be 50cc or under. The legality of your scooter can also be affected by CARB compliance, which is specific to California state law.
  3. Storage Options – More Storage Means More Flexibility
If you’re purchasing a 50cc scooter for commuting purposes, you’ll definitely need to consider what kind of storage options are included. Most street legal scooters feature storage options under the seat, but many also offer rear trunks included in the purchase of the scooter. Consider the types of things you normally carry with you to work and determine if the scooter’s storage will be sufficient to carry them for you. If not, you’ll need to find a different way to carry your things, like a backpack.
  4. Weight Capacity – Higher Capacity Means More Riders
50cc scooters feature a standard weight capacity of around 225 pounds, although some do offer larger or smaller capacities. If you’re looking to carry a passenger, consider purchasing a scooter that has a higher weight capacity.
Remember that weight capacity isn’t necessarily a hard and fast rule. More often than not, if you overload the scooter, you won’t be able to reach the top speeds listed by the manufacturer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Buying a 50cc scooter is different than buying a motorcycle or car. Customers typically have different questions to consider when purchasing something much smaller than standard vehicles Let’s take a look at shoppers’ most frequently asked questions about 50cc scooters.

  • 50cc vs 150cc: Which is better for you?
50cc mopeds and scooters are commonly brought up in the same line of thought with 150cc scooters. So, which one is better for you? 50cc scooters have less powerful engines and thus much lower top speeds. If you’re looking for local transportation, a 50cc scooter is best. 150cc scooters can travel on interstates at speeds more than 55+ MPH.
  • Do 50cc scooters have good gas mileage?
Yes! Scooters rival motorcycles in terms of fuel economy. You can expect your 50cc scooter to get around 100 miles to the gallon, but remember that most scooters only carry around 1.5 gallons of fuel at a time.
  • Do you need a license to drive 50cc scooters?
If you’re purchasing a street legal gas scooter and planning to drive it on state-owned roads, then yes, you will need a license to drive. You may need to check with your state offices in order to find out exactly what kind of license is necessary, as you may not need a full driver’s license.
  • Are 50cc scooters safe to drive?
Much like every other vehicle, a 50cc scooter is only as safe as you drive. Safety features like headlights, blinkers and taillights are all typically built into the scooter, but it’s up to you to operate it safely. Always wear a helmet and drive defensively when on the road with cars.

50cc Scooter Features

Learn more about the considerations you should take into account when purchasing a new 50cc scooter.

  • ENGINE POWER
In this review, we only focused on scooters that have 50cc engines. This is the standard engine size for street legal scooters, but that doesn’t mean they all offer the same quality. 50cc engines typically offer enough power to get up to 40 miles per hour at maximum, but many of them are slower than this. Try to find a scooter that can reach the upper ends of the speed range so you won’t be as limited in which roads you can drive on. Don’t forget to consider scooters that feature engines with an electric start and a kick starts for back up, in case you have a dead battery.
  • BRAKE TYPES
The type of brakes on your scooter can have a huge impact on maneuverability and safety. Most 50cc scooters feature disc brakes on the front wheel and drum brakes on the rear wheel. Disc brakes are preferable for both wheels, but this can be a difficult feature to find. Disc brakes tend to be of higher quality and durability, while drum brakes may degrade faster, especially in wet weather.
  • WEIGHT CAPACITY
The weight of the driver can affect a 50cc scooter’s overall performance in many ways. We recommend you stick to the weight capacity listed by the manufacturer. If you exceed it, you may decrease the performance of your scooter, as well as its overall lifespan. Most 50cc scooters feature a weight capacity of around 225 pounds Those made for kids typically cap out at around 100 pounds.
  • SAFETY FEATURES
Look for scooters with built-in safety features. These typically include headlights and taillights, but may extend to features like locked storage trunks and improved brake quality. The goal here is to be able to operate your scooter in a way prevents accidents and harm during operation and storage.
  • DURABILITY
The durability of your brand new 50cc gas scooter is important to consider for a variety of different reasons. Mainly, you don’t want your vehicle falling apart while you’re driving it. On the other hand, these are expensive products and you don’t want your scooter breaking after a month of driving. You can read customer reviews on each specific model to learn more about durability, but you should also look for scooters that are built from durable materials like steel and polypropylene.

Best Gas Scooter

The best gas scooter for the money is Tao Tao Powermax Blue is a powerful, street legal gas scooter with tons of storage options and a super comfortable ride, making it the top competitor on our list.

#1  Tao Tao Powermax Blue Gas Scooter

Award: Best Gas Scooter

WHY WE LIKE IT: The TaoTao Powermax Blue gas power scooter is fast, comfortable and durable. This scooter was made to be used on the roads and interstates, making this the perfect choice for commuters who are looking for efficient gas mileage and low-cost operation. It’s also extra durable with 12 inch steel rims.

Pros
  • Extra powerful engine
  • Street legal
  • Excellent gas mileage
Cons
  • Drum brakes on rear wheel
  • May require more maintenance
  • Not suited for off-road use

Engine Size 10/10
This street legal scooter features an extra-powerful 150cc engine. With an engine of this size, you’ll have plenty of power and speed to travel on most roads and interstates. The engine also has a fully automatic transmission so you don’t have to worry about shifting gears while driving.

This 150cc scooter features an electric start with keys, but gives you the option of using the kick start in case the electric start doesn’t work.

Top Speed 9/10
With the most powerful engine on your list, you would be correct in thinking that this scooter would feature the highest top speed. The Powermax can travel at speeds up to 60 MPH, which is why it’s perfect for commuting.

The steel rims on both front and back wheels help you achieve max speeds without the fear of breaking down in the middle of the road.

Fuel Capacity 10/10
The Tao Tao Powermax Blue features a 1.3 gallon fuel tank, which might seem small, especially when compared to cars. However, the scooter provides excellent gas mileage. Some customers have even reported getting up to 100 miles per gallon with this scooter. That gives you plenty of range for your daily commute and means you don’t have to buy gas as often.

Brakes 9/10
The brakes on this scooter are well made and perform well, as you should come to expect for a scooter that you’ll use on actual roads. The front wheel features disc brakes, while the rear wheel features drum brakes.

While we would have preferred both wheels to feature disc brakes, the rear drum brake still performs well at low and high speeds.

#2  Coleman PowerSports CT200U-A Gas Scooter

Award: Best Gas Scooter For Adults

WHY WE LIKE IT: The Coleman Powersports CT200U-A is the perfect gas powered mini trail bike for adults who are looking for speed and fun on off-road terrains. It features an incredibly powerful engine and an extra-durable frame but might disappoint when it comes to top speed. However, if you want to get adventurous, this is the gas scooter for you.

Pros
  • Great for off-road use
  • Powerful 2-stroke engine
  • Easy to drive
Cons
  • Not very fast
  • No front brakes
  • No headlights

Engine Size 10/10
This mini trail bike features a powerful, 196cc engine, which equates to about 6.5 horsepower. Since this scooter is made for off-road use, a powerful OHV engine like this is ideal. With the added power, you can easily traverse mud, snow, grass and much more.

A large engine size like this also easily handles adult-sized drivers, up to 250 pounds. It definitely packs a big punch for adults.

Top Speed 9/10
The Coleman CT200U-A only gets up to top speeds of around 20 miles per hour, in spite of the extra powerful engine. This may disappoint you if you’re looking for more speed over power. However, this speed is good for difficult terrains.

Fuel Capacity 9.5/10
The fuel tank on the CT200U-A is another top selling point. With 1.1 gallons of capacity, you can operate the scooter all day long without needing to fill up as often as other scooters. It also features decent fuel efficiency, even when driving it faster and rougher.

Brakes 9/10
This scooter comes with drum brakes on the rear wheel, but nothing on the front wheel. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be unsafe while driving the CT200U-A, but you won’t have as much flexibility in stopping and maneuvering. Another one of the best gas powered scooters is the Monster Moto Classic Gas-Powered Mini Bike. It reaches a maximum speed of 23 mph, has adjustable handlebars, uses super grip tires, and has a large comfortable seat.

 #3  MotoTec Uberscoot 2X

Award: Best Stand Up Gas Scooter

WHY WE LIKE IT: The MotoTec Uberscoot 2X is the most portable and versatile gas scooter on our list. It can operate as a standing or sitting scooter, with a detachable seat. It also easily folds so you can store it without taking up too much space. With a sleek design and rugged tires, this is the perfect scooter for both on- and off-road use.

Pros
  • Includes a detachable seat
  • High top speeds
  • Folds for easy storage options
Cons
  • Low fuel capacity
  • No storage options
  • Instruction manual not useful

Engine Size 9/10
The Uberscoot 2X features a standard 50cc engine, which is more than enough power to get around, whether on the roads or on difficult terrain. The engine size makes this a great choice for both adults and children.

Top Speed 10/10
This traditionally-styled scooter can travel at speeds up to 35 miles per hour, which is among the fastest scooters on our list. Such fast speeds on standing scooters like this may feel dangerous, and that can certainly be true for novice drivers. However, the durable construction and detachable seat make it easier to operate

Fuel Capacity 8/10
This is perhaps the worst aspect of this scooter. It only gives you a .23 gallon fuel tank, which won’t get you very far. While the scooter does provide decent fuel efficiency, it ultimately doesn’t last too long, especially during longer and faster rides.

Brakes 10/10
Brakes are especially important on smaller gas scooters like this one, so it’s good that the Uberscoot 2X features disc brakes on both the front and back wheels. Since standing scooters can be a little more difficult to handle, front and rear brakes give you more versatility and maneuverability overall.”

#4  Tao Tao EVO 50 Gas Scooter

Award: Best Gas Moped

WHY WE LIKE IT: The Tao Tao EVO 50 is another street legal gas scooter that offers tons of storage and extremely good fuel efficiency. While it isn’t powerful enough for interstate usage, this 50cc scooter still gives you enough power to use on local roads with ease.

Pros
  • Street legal
  • Tons of storage options
  • High fuel capacity and gas mileage
Cons
  • Requires a valid driver’s license
  • Assembly can be difficult
  • Drum brakes on rear wheel

Engine Size 9/10
With a standard size of 50cc, the EVO 50 is the perfect solution for commuters who only need to travel locally. The engine is fully automatic and features an electric start with keys, while still giving you the option for a standard kick start.

Top Speed 9/10
This Tao Tao’s top speed isn’t as high as many of the other scooters on our list, which is why you should only use it on local roads. Coming in at 25 miles per hour, this gas power scooter may not be exciting, but it’s definitely a reliable option for customers who aren’t seeking a thrill.

Fuel Capacity 10/10
This scooter gives you 1.3 gallons of fuel capacity, which is the highest capacity on the list. It also features incredibly high fuel efficiency, with many users reporting up to 100 miles per gallon. With such efficient gas mileage, you will find youself filling up the gas tank much less often than usual.

Brakes 9/10
The Tao Tao EVO 50 gives you disc brakes on the front wheel and drum brakes on the back wheel, which is pretty standard for street legal scooters. The combination of the two help you brake during high and low speeds alike, which is absolutely necessary for road usage. Be sure to also check out another quality option: the MotoTec Uberscoot 50cc Gas Scooter by Evo Powerboards. Some of its key features include its true suspension system for a smooth ride, improved folding system, quick-release seat, and top speed of 30 mph.

#5  Tao Tao EVO 50 Gas Scooter

Award: Best Gas Moped

WHY WE LIKE IT: This gas powered mini dirt bike was built with safety in mind, which is one of the biggest reasons why we like the Mega Moto MM-B80-BR. It features a chain guard, engine stop switch and durable chain guard, making this an extra-safe scooter for all ages. That’s not to mention the powerful engine and comfortable seat, both of which are perfect for all-terrain use.

Pros
  • High gas mileage
  • Lots of safety features
  • Perfect for off-road use
Cons
  • No front brakes
  • No storage options
  • Low weight limit

Engine Size 9.5/10
The MM-B80-BR features a powerful 80cc bike engine, which provides enough of a punch for rough terrain as well as enough to zip around on paved roads. It features an automatic clutch, making it even easier to operate overall.

Top Speed 9/10
This Mega Moto mini dirt bike can get up to 23 miles per hour of speed, which is on par with many of the other gas scooters on our list. While you may not get up to these speeds off-road, you can easily achieve them on paved environments.”

Fuel Capacity 9/10
With a fuel capacity of almost a gallon, this gas-powered scooter gives you enough time on the seat with hardly any down time filling up. While you may burn through fuel faster while off-roading, you can usually go most of the day without needing to refuel on this tank.

Brakes 8/10
The MM-B80-BR only gives you brakes on the rear wheel, but they are disc brakes, making them more reliable and durable for off-road use. The lack of front brakes can make stopping less versatile, so you should be a little more careful when operating at high speeds or in difficult environments.”

How Do You Want To Use Your Scooter?

One of the most important things you should figure out ask before purchasing a new gas scooter is how exactly you plan to use it. Most people use their scooters for recreational purposes or for road travel. The answer to this question will point you in the right direction before you even start looking at products.

How We Reviewed the Scooters

The devil is in the details folks.

1. Engine Size – 50cc is the Industry Standard
As with all vehicles that have a gas-powered engine, you should consider the size of the engine itself in conjunction with the way you’ll use your gas-powered scooter. The best gas scooters have at least a 50cc engine, but for road travel, consider something much higher.

2. Top Speed – Faster Speed Is Better for Road Travel
Your scooter’s top speed is often reliant on the size of its engine. If you want a gas scooter for road travel, purchase a model that can achieve the speed limit of the roads you use. If you’re using the scooter for recreational purposes, top speed doesn’t matter as much, but higher speeds means more fun.

3. Fuel Capacity – More Gas Means More Travel
Most sitting gas scooters have a 1 gallon fuel capacity, while stand up scooters typically have less than .5 gallon fuel capacity. Again, the amount of gas you need often depends on the use type you hope to achieve with your scooter. Buy a model with higher fuel capacity if you’re planning on traveling long distances and a model with lower fuel capacity for local use.

4. Brakes – Disc Brakes Are Best
The type of brakes on your gas scooter determines how well you can stop and maneuver. Sitting scooters often have brakes for both the front and back wheels, while standing scooters usually only have brakes for the rear wheel. Disc brakes are the best, as they offer more stopping power and protection from the elements.

Resident Expert Consultant

As with any vehicle you purchase, safety should be a top priority for you when you start researching the best gas scooters on the market. Many of the scooters on our list include some safety features, but there are always gaps in safety coverage. You should always wear a helmet while operating a scooter, regardless of where you’re using it.

Consider the person using the scooter as well. Safety can go further than the features the scooter includes. Some scooters are better suited for younger children, while others should only be used by adults. – Ryan Hansen | Gas Scooter Expert

Frequently Asked Questions

Buying a scooter isn’t like buying a car or motorcycle. You should consider different features than you would with a larger vehicle. Check out the answers to customers’ most frequently asked questions to help you feel more comfortable about your purchase.

  • What kind of gas mileage do gas scooters provide?
The gas mileage you get on your scooter largely depends on the weight of the person using it and the way it’s being driven (R). However, most gas scooters offer excellent gas mileage, some even ranging up to 100 MPG.
  • Do you need a driver’s license to drive a gas scooter?
Technically speaking, you’re required to have a driver’s license to operate any kind of vehicle. If you’re planning on using your gas scooter to drive to work, you’ll definitely need a license. There is some gray area when it comes to recreational use on private property or off road. Again, you’re technically supposed to have a license, but law enforcement is typically more concerned about scooters on the roads.
  • Can you drive gas scooters on the road?
Yes, you can drive gas scooters on the road. Most states require road scooters to have at least a 50cc engine and a valid driver’s license. If you’re planning on taking your scooter on the interstate, you should plan on purchasing a model with at least a 150cc engine.
  • Are gas scooters hard to drive?
No, scooters aren’t difficult to drive. Most gas scooters feature automatic transmissions, so you simply need to twist the throttle to go and squeeze the brakes to stop. If you’ve never driven a scooter before, it can be a little intimidating, but you’ll get the hang of it in no time.

Gas Scooter Features To Look Out For

Learn more about the considerations you should take into account when purchasing a new gas scooter.

  • ENGINE POWER
One of the most important considerations to make with your gas scooter is the engine’s power. While the engine size is the main indication of how much power you’ll get out of your scooter, there are a number of other things that you need to consider, including:

    • Scooter Weight: Heavier scooters will take more engine power to get up to speed, while lighter scooters use the engine to achieve top speeds easier. If you have a large scooter, but want to still go faster, make sure you purchase one with a more powerful engine.
    • Driver Weight: The weight of the driver is also something to consider when it comes to engine power. Much like the weight of the scooter itself, the driver’s weight can affect how much the scooter has to work to get up to top speed.
    • The Terrain: If you’re planning on operating your gas scooter on rough terrains, you’ll definitely want one with a more powerful engine. More power can get you unstuck, over hills and through twists and turns with ease.
  • SAFETY FEATURES
Safety is always super important when you’re operating a vehicle and gas scooters are no exception. Unfortunately, many of the off-road scooters don’t really focus on the safety aspect. As such, you may need to install your own safety features or protect yourself with additional safety gear. When it comes down to safety, consider scooters that feature headlights, terrain-appropriate tires, disc brakes and overall speed and engine power. As a rule of thumb, younger kids generally shouldn’t operate larger and faster scooters without adult supervision.
  • WEIGHT CAPACITY
Not all scooters are made equal, especially when you take into consideration the weight of the person driving them. Always look at the manufacturer’s recommended weight capacity and make sure you are in that range before purchasing. Most gas scooters have a weight limit that maxes out at 250 pounds. For children, consider scooters with smaller frames that are more appropriate to their weight. Heavier scooters will be more difficult for them to manage.
  • STORAGE OPTIONS
Street legal scooters typically offer some kind of storage compartment so you can bring items with you on your commute. This often comes in the form of a storage space under the seat, but there are plenty of scooters that include a rear tray where you can attach a trunk for additional storage space. Most off-road gas scooters don’t give you any kind of storage solutions, so if you’re planning on being out for the whole day, bring a backpack to carry your meals, water and other gear.
  • DURABILITY
The durability of your scooter is important to consider for a variety of different reasons. Mainly, you don’t want your vehicle falling apart while you’re driving it. On the other hand, these are expensive products and you don’t it breaking after a month of driving. The level of durability you need also depends on how you plan to use your gas scooter. Off-road scooters should be more durable than other scooters. This is also true for street legal scooters. You can read customer reviews on each specific model to learn more about durability, but you should also look for scooters that are built from durable materials like steel and polypropylene.

Best Electric Scooter For Kids

The best electric scooters for kids all have a few important things in common. They get good range per battery charge, are durable, have a decent speed and most importantly, they are safe. To come up with this buying guide we tested over 25 in all. Then we researched twice that number, pitting them against each other to find out which ones are the best. If you’re looking for something with a bit more power, take a look at the best 4 wheelers for kids too.

Electric scooters are projected to sell about 46 million units in 2019 alone (R). But out of all of those sales, there are only about 10 best brands that consistently make the best vehicles. These are brands like Razor, Gotrax, Tomoloo, Pulse Performance, Glion, Segway, Uberscoot and the costzon electric scooter to name a few.  The price range for the best electric scooter for kids is between $100-$700. To determine which were the best, we looked at online user reviews, watched youtube videos to hear what the kids think, we listened to parents, and we put it all together. (This adult had way too much fun during the testing process.)

We looked at safety first and foremost, then our focus was on how enjoyable each scooter was for kids, how it performed, durability, charge time, range and speed. And lastly, we looked at each model from a child’s point of view to determine how they feel about each aspect of their ride.

Our #1 Pick is the TOMOLOO L1 Electric Scooter
Fast enough for kids, with plenty of style and a few extras

All of this has led to our top pick. The #1 electric scooter on the market is the TOMOLOO L1″ Wheel Electric Scooter.

#1 TOMOLOO L1 – The best electric scooter for older kids

Pros

  • Range of 18.6 miles
  • Lots of style
  • Smooth ride

Cons

  • Charge time of 3-5 hours

This scooter was a ton of fun. The TOMOLOO L1 Electric Scooter is the best for older kids. It has a sleek style that looks like a more grown-up adult electric scooter, with a maximum speed of 15.5 MPH and a range of 18.6 miles per charge. The 8.5-inch Air Filled Tires make for a smooth ride even when the road gets a bit bumpy. The lithium ion battery has a charging time of 3.5 hours, which could be better. It weighs just 28.5 lbs which makes it great not only for kids but also for commuting. It folds easily for storage at home, car trunks, or under subway seats. The frame is nice and durable, made of aerospace-grade aluminum, supporting riders up to 220 pounds. Other features include a 250W motor, which helps it go over inclines as steep as 20 degrees, disc braking and eABS regenerative anti-lock braking system, LCD display, leather-like handles, and an ultra-bright headlight.

We love it because it has style to spare, great portability and great performance. It has all of the right features along with decent speed and range. What’s not to love? Tomoloo has done it again. It feels like a research and development product, it’s so good. But no, it’s available to all. I wouldn’t have them change anything. Rides like this are the reason that kids prefer them over the best robot toys for kids these days.

#2 Super Turbo 1000w Elite Electric Scooter- Most Powerful and Durable Kid’s Scooter

We're sorry, this product is temporarily out of stock

Pros

  • Powerful 1000 Watt Motor
  • 21 mile range
  • Maximum speed of 26 MPH

Cons

  • Weighs 92 lbs.
  • Dim headlight
  • Doesn’t do well on uneven ground

For kids who want to ride an electric scooter with power and durability, it doesn’t get much better than the Super Turbo 1000w Elite Electric Scooter. It is basically the Hummer of scooters. It sports a powerful 1000watt motor and the manufacturer has upgraded the sprockets and chain drive to heavier versions. It carries up to a 250lb rider and reaches speeds of 26 miles per hour.  While some parents might find this scooter too powerful for their kids, the ones that do ride it are loving it. In our testing, this scooter took a lot of abuse with no signs of serious wear. This scooter delivers a great ride thanks to those  10.5″ rubber tires, as long as you are on paved and even ground. Although you can buy an optional hill kit accessory which allows for some improvement when it comes to other riding surfaces. One thing that we didn’t care for is Economy/Turbo Mode. This  The Econo Mode will give you more distance, while Turbo Mode gives you more speed. We would have preferred to not have to choose one or the other. However, it doesn’t seem to bother the kids who are riding this model. The battery charging time is 6-8 hours. That might seem long but look at the power and speed that you are getting.

Bigger and older kids are going to love it for its speed, range, and durability. If you thought only kids used scooters, think again.(R)We found those factors to be the most impressive. The weight capacity means that nearly anyone can enjoy this vehicle. We knew it had to be our #2 choice. They need to get that headlight brighter, decrease the weight a bit and give it a bit more power on uneven ground, but despite these things, it’s sweet! Kids will love this as much as the best electric skateboard.

#3 GoTrax GXL Electric Scooter – Best Electric Scooter for The Money

Our #3 Pick is the GoTrax GXL Electric Scooter
The GoTrax GXL Electric Scooter is the best electric scooter for the money

Pros

  • 15.5 MPH
  • Great performance
  • Smooth ride

Cons

  • A bit heavy
  • The headlight should be brighter

We love the Gotrax GXL commuting electric scooter. It makes this mode of transport accessible and easy for anyone. This model is the best electric scooter for your money. It has all of the features that you need, none of the features that you don’t and it is easy to use, with plenty of power for the price. The company has made some really spectacular vehicles of late and this may be one of their best. The 8.5″ Pneumatic tires give you a stable and smooth ride.  The 250 watt motor provides plenty of power and a top speed of 15.5MPH. It will hold a maximum weight of 220 lbs, while the scooter itself weighs 31 lbs. That might be a bit heavy for some people, but we found it easy to carry around after it is folded up for travel. This model gives you a 12.5 mile range per charge and the battery recharges in about 4 Hours. The front and rear braking systems are very responsive. In fact, the rear brake is one of the best brakes out there. The handlebar seems to be the perfect height for most riders. It’s as good as any of the electric bikes.

The bottom line is that it’s a great value for your money and it’s maintenance free aside from charging the battery. Gotrax builds a nice tough balancing scooter here that pleases fans. It’s a good electric scooter for commuting or play. The only downsides are the weight and the fact that the headlight could be brighter, but honestly, this won’t bother most riders. Another option to consider upgrading your old standard scooter with is the Hoverstar Electric Kick Start Scooter for Kids on Amazon.com. This scooter has a weight limit of 120 lbs. and a hand brake system designed to keep your little one safe while they have fun riding.

#4 Glion Dolly Electric Scooter – Most Convenient Electric Scooter For Kids

Sale
Our #4 Pick is the Glion Dolly Electric Scooter
The Glion Dolly Electric Scooter is the most convenient electric scooter for kids

Pros

  • 3.5 hour charge time
  • Airless tires
  • Self-standing feature

Cons

  • Not so great on bumpy roads

The Glion Dolly foldable lightweight adult electric Scooter is a popular one among kids and I really enjoyed my time testing it as well. It’s very convenient thanks to a unique foldable design that lets you roll it like a piece of wheeled luggage. Those wheels are designed like military wheels and measure 8″. They are filled with honeycombs. Along with its 6061 Aluminum frame and the fact that it weighs only 28 pounds, we are picking this one for the most convenient electric scooter that you can buy. It’s durable, light and easy to carry.  It has a 3.5 hour charge time and will give you a range of 15 miles per charge. Other features include electronic anti-lock brakes, max capacity of 255 lbs, 250W brushless motor, headlight, rear reflector, and pedestrian bell.  Glion did a great job making this scooter convenient and easy to ride.

The convenience of use means a lot to your kid, after all, they have to move it and carry it around when the battery runs out. We love this because any child can ride and handle the Glion Dolly Foldable easily without sacrificing some basic features. If they had improved the performance on bumpy roads we would have ranked it higher.

#5 UberScoot 1000w Evo Powerboards Electric Scooter – Editor’s Choice

We're sorry, this product is temporarily out of stock

Pros

  • Powerful 1000 watt motor
  • Great performance
  • Maximum speed of 26 MPH

Cons

  • 10 mile range
  • Charging time is 4-8 hours

Uberscoot may not be a name that everyone knows, but judging by this model, that will soon change. The Uberscoot 1000w Electric Scooter is powerful and looks like a bad boy that will win any race. It likely will with its 26 MPH maximum speed, courtesy of a powerful 1000 watt motor. There are only two downsides to this best electric scooter for kids. The battery can take up to 8 hours to charge and it has a maximum range of only 10 miles. This one is all about speed and durability. That’s not a bad thing. Not all riders want distance and 10 miles is a lot for most kids anyway. It’s recommended for kids 12 and older.

We chose this model because we were blown away by the speed and ride in our tests. The 10″ pneumatic tires keep it on the ground for a smooth ride too. Tires that grip are more important than you think, no matter the vehicle (R). There are front and rear disc brakes, a 265 lbs max capacity and a quick release foldable seat. It should be noted that the range can be extended with “Economy Mode”, but this caps the scooter’s acceleration and top speed.

The UberScoot 1000w is a durable performer that competes with other high-end scooter brands, but having to choose between speed and range on this model really harshed our buzz.

#6 Razor E300 Electric Scooter – Best Budget Electric Scooter

Our #6 Pick is the Razor E300 Electric Scooter
The Razor E300 Electric Scooter is the best budget electric scooter

Pros

  • Comfortable ride
  • Large tires for great traction
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Very basic
  • No battery charge indicator
  • Not very stylish

Razor has made so many quality scooters like the Razor ecosmart, Razor rx200 electric, the Razor e200 electric scooter and many more. The Razor E300 electric scooter is perfect for kids of all ages, with speeds up to 15 mph and the battery offers up to 40 minutes of continuous use. Kids who tested this one really appreciated the very large deck so there is plenty of foot room. It also sports a large frame and twist-grip acceleration for easy control. The E300 gives riders a stable ride thanks to large 8″ tires with great traction. The retractable kickstand and hand brake round it all out.  The maximum capacity is 220 lbs. so older kids can enjoy this scooter as well. The all steel frame and fork give it a weight of about 40 lbs, which is not bad at all.

This is a pretty basic model, without many of the bells and whistles that its competition has, but very impressive. The focus here is  just getting kids moving and having fun. It’s an awesome budget scooter.

#7 Razor E100 Electric Scooter

Our #7 Pick is the Razor E100 Electric Scooter
The Razor E100 Electric Scooter is another hit from Razor

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Great durability for the cost
  • Smooth ride

Cons

  • Motor cover catches when it turns
  • Charging time of 8 hours

The Razor E100 Electric Scooter would have made our “best budget electric scooter for kids”, but a few key faults landed it in our #7 pick. So this is our second pick for a budget scooter. It has a maximum speed of 10 MPH and a kick start, high-torque, chaindriven motor. Other features include twist-grip throttle control, hand operated front brake, and it’s not a heavy scooter at 32 lbs. The battery pack has a long 8 hours until it has a full charge and it will deliver up to 40 minutes of continuous ride time.

Why did we choose the e100 electric scooter? Obviously, you are trading a lot of features for the low price on this one and if that doesn’t bother you or your kid, you’ll still love this model for what it does. For the price, it’s a great entry into the world of electric scooters. And that is what many of you are looking for. Here it is.

Pros

  • Stylish retro look
  • Comfortable seat
  • 10 mile range

Cons

  • Only 45 minutes of run time per charge
  • Requires a lot of room to store it

Girls who like to adventure want their own thing. Sometimes that means pink, other times that means some retro style. The Razor Pocket Mod Miniature Euro Electric Scooter is probably the most stylish one they can get. It looks like an electric moped. It’s recommended for ages 8 and up, but there are many smaller kids riding these as well. That’s your call as a parent. This vintage-inspired scooter has about 10 miles of range/40 minutes per charge and that battery takes about 12 hours to fully charge from nothing. You’ll hit max speeds of 15 MPH. It features a chain drive motor as well. With a weight capacity of 170 pounds, teen girls can enjoy it too. The seat is very comfortable and the retractable kickstand means that it can park anywhere. The twist grip acceleration control is easy for kids to use.

Naturally, we love the mod miniature euro electric scooter for it’s style. More importantly, it’s a big hit with the young ladies. The weight capacity, comfort and range hit all of the sweet spots. It would have ranked higher if it had just a bit more run time per charge.

Sale
Our #9 Pick is the Razor Power Core E90 Electric Scooter
The Razor Power Core E90 Electric Scooter is the best electric scooter for beginners

Pros

  • Long lasting battery
  • Weighs only 22 lbs.
  • Perfect for beginners

Cons

  • Not foldable so hard to carry

If your child is just getting to know scooters, this is the best model for them. Period. It’s lightweight, but sadly not foldable, has a tame 10 Mph top speed, hand brakes, a great 80 minutes of use per charge and it takes 6-8 hours to charge it. As you can tell from the specs, this is meant to be an entry-level scooter, not a powerhouse. Since it is so light and easy to use, with a low top speed and an affordable price, beginners are going to love it.

That’s why it passed our rigorous testing to make our #9 pick. It has a kick start, high-torque, hub motor, and front button acceleration control. The max rider weight is 120 pounds, so most young kids will be able to use it.

<iframe width=”1264″ height=”711″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/peDsb7oxUcU” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

#10Razor E125 Electric Scooter

Our #10 Pick is the Razor E125 Electric Scooter
The Razor E125 Electric Scooter is another great budget scooter

Pros

  • Weighs only 28 lbs.
  • 8″ front tire makes the ride smooth
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Plastic back wheel
  • Has to get up to 3 MPH manually

Razor keeps knocking them out of the park. The Razor E125 Electric Scooter is another affordable Razor scooter that gets great reviews online. It’s a good scooter for both new riders and young kids who have basic experience. With those kids in mind, this scooter has a maximum speed of just 10 MPH.  The maximum range is 10 miles or about 40 minutes on a single charge. The battery will charge in about 8 hours. The ride is smooth thanks to that big 8″ front tire even on bumpy roads. You do have to treat it like a kick scooter to get it going to 3 MPH first before the motor kicks in.

Like Han Solo said, “It may not look like much, but she’s got it where it counts”. The tagline for this one should be, “Just Scoot”. It’s a solid scooter that is used by kids and loved by parents. Versatile as the Nikes on your feet.

<iframe width=”1264″ height=”711″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/eE4ePuFNJcM” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

Electric Scooters For Kids Buyers Guide

Below are the top features you should look for in a scooter for your kids.

Safety First – UL 2272 Fire Safety Certification

  • Safety comes before everything else and should be your number one concern. Look for UL 2272 Certification on any scooter that you buy. A few years back the industry began requiring  UL 2272 Certification which makes things like scooters and hoverboards much safer.  It means that it has passed all safety tests and is safe for you to ride.

Make Sure That Your Scooter Is Age Appropriate For Your Child.

  • It’s a good idea to listen to the manufacturer’s age suggestion. If they recommend a scooter for ages 10 and up they likely have very good reasons for this. Perhaps it’s too powerful for younger kids or too tall etc. Ultimately it’s up to your discretion as a parent, but you should always pay attention to the recommended age rating.

The Correct Tire Size Is Important

  • Tire size is an important consideration when it comes to scooters. They come in a variety of sizes. Some are smaller and some are larger. Tire size affects not only the stability of the ride but also where you can go with it and what kind of terrain it will be able to handle. If you are looking to simply sidewalk-surf around the neighborhood, smaller tires will do the trick. If you are looking to do more and go “off-road” you’ll want larger tires that will handle more types of terrain better.

The Ideal Battery life and Charging Times

  • Longer battery life is good, but it isn’t everything. For instance, long battery life if useless if your hoverboard only goes 5 MPH. You want to balance a long-lasting battery with good speed, performance and charge time. You want a long battery life in a model that also delivers the speed that you are happy with.
  • Charging times are also important. You don’t want to wait 6 hours to charge your battery if it is only going to give you 2 hours of running time and a very low 5-mile range. Again, what you want to look for is a balance that works for you. These days, a 3 to 4 hour charge time is acceptable for lithium ion batteries, balanced against performance, speed and how long that battery lasts while riding.

Make Sure Your Can Go The Distance

  • Along with battery life and charge times, the range that your scooter can travel on a single charge is one of the top considerations. Look for the best scooter range that you can get in order to get the most out of your purchase. A great range with short charging times means less waiting around and more rolling down the road. A good range for the best scooters is 9-16 miles.

A Solid Yet Lightweight Construction

  • Like any other vehicle, one of your top concerns should be quality construction. You want a tough and rugged frame that will last.
  • Along with solid construction, you also want a lightweight unit. A lighter scooter generally means more speed and better battery capacity. It also makes for a smoother ride.
Powerful Motors Matter
  • Obviously, the more powerful the motors, the more your scooter can deliver. The bigger the better, but it should be balanced with what your child can handle.

One of the things we like best about this scooter is the automatic folding. • Excellent lifetime warranty

Cons
  • Heavier than other models
  • Not great for taller people
  • Remote sometimes un-syncs

Award: Best Heavy Duty Folding Mobility Scooter

WHY WE LIKE IT: The EV Rider Transport offers a classic look with a solid design that focuses on durability and comfort. With its long battery range and easy operation, this folding mobility scooter is an excellent choice for anyone looking for something simple and reliable.

Pros
  • Easy to fold
  • Long battery range
  • Sleek and stylish design
Cons
  • Lower weight capacity
  • Slow speeds
  • Seat could be more comfortable

Weight Capacity 9/10
This is where the EV Rider transport struggles the most. It can only carry capacities up to 250 pounds, and it really struggles to perform at its peak capacity when you get close to that weight limit.

Fortunately, the seat is comfortable for both long and short trips, even with the lack of armrests or onboard storage. While it’s not your best power lift recliner, the comfort of this scooter is definitely a plus.

Top Speed 8/10

One area in which the EV Rider excels is its battery range. It features a larger battery that gives you up to 15 miles of travel time on a single charge. This impressive weight capacity makes this a versatile choice for a variety of body types. The scooter is also comfortable, with a padded seat and included armrests. The seat is also adjustable to make room for longer legs.

Top Speed 9/10
You can choose from three different speed settings while using this folding mobility scooter. Switch between 3, 5 and 7 miles per hour with ease using the controls on the scooter’s handlebars. You also get a really helpful display on the handlebars that shows you how fast you’re moving.

Of course, this range can vary depending on your weight and the type of terrain on which you’re driving. The battery charges quickly, as well, which only adds to the convenience of using this scooter. We recommend charging it every night, but if you happen to need to charge it during the day, you can expect to have to wait a few hours for a full charge.

Warranty 8/10
You get a lifetime warranty for the frame, which is an excellent comfort, especially if you’re worried about breaking parts. You also get a 1 year manufacturer’s warranty on the battery, motor and other electrical components on the scooter. If you need to, you can return the scooter within 30 days of purchase for a full refunds. These are much easier for older folks to ride than something like the best hoverboard.

Folding Vs. Standard Mobility Scooters

So, what’s the big difference between folding and standard mobility scooters? Of course, the main difference lies in the portability of the scooter. Folding scooters are much more portable than standard options. This makes them perfect for flying or bringing with you in the car. If scooters aren’t an option for you, take a look at this list to determine the best wheel chair for you.

Standard scooters also tend to be sturdier than their more portable counterparts, but they both offer the same experience when it comes to comfort and ease of use. For the most part, both types of scooter are essentially the same in function, but differ in form. If you’re looking for a scooter on the go, take a look at the best knee scooter.

How We Reviewed the Mobility Scooters

A deeper look at the ins and outs, just for you.

  1. Weight Capacity – Higher Capacity is a Must
Of all the different kinds of electric vehicles we review here at Gadget Review, the weight capacity is most important for folding mobility scooters. These helpful vehicles need to be able to handle a wide range of body weights and sizes. While the standard weight capacity for these scooters tends to hover right around 250 pounds, the best options can handle up to 300 pounds or more. And a high weight capacity isn’t the only thing to consider. Since folding mobility scooters are often used for longer periods of time, they also need to be comfortable. The best scooters provide padded seats, lumbar support, adjustable settings and storage options.
  2. Top Speed – Keep Moving with Higher Speeds
We also considered the top speed of each of the scooters we reviewed as an important metric. No one wants to be moving at the speed of a snail. That’s why you’re buying a mobility scooter in the first place! Of course, you can’t expect your scooter to go as fast as a motorcycle. The average folding scooter offers a top speed of around 4-5 miles per hour. However, the best scooters offer more speed than that. Consider how exactly you’re going to use your folding scooter. If you need to travel longer distances with your scooter, you may want to consider purchasing one with a much higher top speed. However, if you’re just using it for short distances, you may not need something that’s super fast.
  3. Battery Range – More Battery Prevents Getting Stranded
All electric mobility scooters are powered by batteries, but those batteries aren’t created equal. The power and overall capacity of the battery determines how far you can travel in a single charge. Most mobility scooters can travel an average of 10 miles on a single battery charge, but the best models can go as far as 15 miles before needing to be charged.Again, your needs in this area can vary. Look at the way you’re going to use your scooter and then decide how much range you actually need.
  4. Warranty – Longer Warranties Cover More Problems
After making your purchase, you’re going to be using your scooter a lot in a variety of different situations. The more you use your scooter, the more likely it is that something will break. This is where your warranty comes into play. Most folding mobility scooters offer at least a one year limited warranty. However, your scooter’s warranty is often made up of several different parts. The best scooters offer warranties that cover the frame, controllers and electronics. Top-of-the-line mobility scooters offer limited lifetime warranties with at-home repair options. A warranty like this can be hard to find, especially considering the fact that most scooters have an average lifespan of around 5 years.

Folding mobility scooters can get expensive, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend a lot to get high quality transportation. While the high-end models certainly offer a lot of bells and whistles, they provide just as much functionality as more affordable options.

Before you buy, make a list of features you want in your new scooter. Then, as you shop, look specifically for those features and make your purchasing decision based on whether your needs are filled or not. While you should have a budget, price shouldn’t be the sole factor in your decision. – Ryan Hansen | Folding Mobility Scooter Expert

How We Reviewed The Scooters

Learn more about the considerations you should take into account when purchasing a new folding mobility scooter.

COMFORT FEATURES
Mobility scooters are meant for long-term use throughout the day. Because of this, you’ll want to purchase something that is comfortable for you. The source of the greatest comfort is in the seat. Buy a scooter that features at least a padded seat. However, you may also want to consider one that is adjustable and offers additional features like armrests and lumbar support.

AIRLINE APPROVED
If you’re planning on traveling with your mobility scooter, you’ll definitely want to find one that’s approved for use on airlines. This can be difficult to coordinate since these kinds of schools have batteries, which are typically not allowed on airplanes past a certain point. To be sure, you’ll want to contact your airline directly to be sure if your scooter’s battery is approved for travel.

SCOOTER WEIGHT
Folding scooters are all about portability, so you’ll want to be extra conscious of how heavy the actual scooter is. If you can’t lift and carry it, then you won’t be able to take it with you. Most of the scooters weigh around 40 pounds, but some are heavier or lighter than others.

BATTERY LIFE
The battery life of your scooter is a huge consideration to think about when making your purchase. If you use your scooter on a daily basis for long hours, you’ll definitely need something with a longer battery life.

ROUGH TERRAIN
Where are you going to be using your mobility scooter? Most scooters perform well on normal concrete or asphalt, but they can struggle a bit when it comes to loose gravel. If you know you’re going to be using the scooter on rough terrain, it’s best to be prepared. Buy a scooter with wheels that have bigger tread or better suspension.

Gadget Review: The Automoto 3 Wheeled Scooter (exclusive & video)

automoto-3-wheel-scooter-review

If you recall, about 2 weeks ago I wrote up a quick post detailing the Automoto, a 3 wheeled scooter. At the time I thought nothing of it until the fine folks importing the vehicle to the US contacted me requesting a review. And what better way to review it than to produce a short video segment. So me and George (our resident GadgetReview photag) headed out to Van Nuys on one cold California day and got an EXCLUSIVE first look and review of the vehicle. So, check out the video below to see me in my first ever real-deal video review. Yes, I’m a bit rough on the delivery but it’s my first one, so take it easy on me, and feedback is more than welcome. What could the Automoto be the best one for kids, commuting, speed lovers…?

This isn’t your typical electric scooter adult model. This is a unique experience.

This is a review of the three-wheel tilting scooter called the Automoto. The Auto Moto is a registered trademark of TheAutomoto.com, which is a registered wholesale powersports distribution company. This will outshine even the best knee scooter.

The Automoto is powered by a 150cc single cylinder 4 stroke engine that lets you experience the thrill of enclosed three-wheel tilting when you take a turn. You know, it’s called the Auto Moto for a reason. The tilting rocker system automatically adjusts to the tilt when you’re taking a turn, and ensures excellent traction by keeping the rear wheels in firm contact with the road.
Check if in your state your car driver license will suffice to let you take this beauty with a carbon fiber style dashboard and adjustable handlebar on the roads.

This two-seater yields 83 miles per gallon and stores 2.1 gallons in its tank. Experience spacious and ergonomic seating with foldout armrests and a cushioned backrest. This scooter called the Auto is a partially enclosed three-wheel cab, which means that the roof and the windshield protect the riders from wind and rain. Other safety features include a windshield wiper with a high-pressure spray that ensures a clean windshield and better visibility. The built-in alarm system gives you the peace of mind that your vehicle is secure from theft.

Girls and boys using the Auto Moto for conveyance will appreciate the convenience of two dashboard storage compartments and a 72-liter lockable trunk. Keep your smartphone in the dashboard storage and let the call recognition system inform you about incoming calls.

The three-wheel design lets you turn tight corners with ease. The Auto Moto we tested did not have lighted wheels, but that’s something that’s totally up to you. Speaking of wheels, you can choose from two configurations – 7” diameter and 10” diameter rim.

Remember those days of zooming on your Radio Flyer toddler scooter, you can’t go back to them. But with the Auto Moto, you have the perfect 3-wheeler ride that’s economical, easy to park, and very sturdy.

For more information and contacts check out the official site of the 3 wheeled scooter.

  • Not height adjustable

Winner of numerous awards including the ASTRA Best Toy award and the Parents’ Choice Award, this well designed scooter is aimed at preschoolers to kindergarten aged kids. As on a “big kids” scooter, you lean to turn, and the flexible, low-to-the-ground deck makes this kids scooter intuitive and very easy to learn on. It’s also the quietest scooter on our list, thanks to its high quality ABEC 5 bearings and large urethane wheels. It may not be a 50cc scooter, but it is the best of its class.

The Micro Kickboard Mini also won’t leave scuff marks on your garage or patio floor, making it a fun, safe way to teach little kids to ride a scooter indoors or semi-indoors. It fits kids up to 44 lbs.

 #2  Lascoota 2-in-1 Kick Scooter

Award: Honorable Mention

WHY WE LIKE IT: Our #2 pick features adjustable height handlebars and supports up to 110 lbs. It’s great for families with an elementary school and a preschool age child, since it can be adjusted for height and even includes a removable seat option.

Pros
  • Adjustable height handlebars
  • Removable seat for younger kids
  • Holds more weight than most kids’ scooters
Cons
  • Aluminum parts may make it louder than some other kids scooters
  • At 7 lbs, it’s heavier than most of the competition
  • Wheels may scuff indoor surfaces as it lacks the special non marking wheels of our top pick

The Lascoota 2-in-1 is ideal for families with little kids of different ages, since it features a removable seat so younger kids can sit as they ride along. It also distinguishes itself with light up wheels and a 110 lbs weight limit, higher than most other three-wheeled scooters on our list. The handlebars offer four height options, meaning it can accommodate kids from roughly 2- 8 years old.

Like most kids scooters, the Lascoota 2-in-1 is a lean-to-steer design, making it extremely easy to learn. It also has an extra wide deck for added safety and stability. Made of mostly aluminum and stainless steel for durability, this kids’ scooter features long-lasting ABS plastic on the rear brake for reliable, safe stopping. The screw-in, removable seat mounts to the handlebar in minutes and helps younger kids enjoy the ride safely. If your child is not ready for gas powered scooters, this is perfect.

 #3  Fusion Z250 Scooter

Award: Best for Kids 8+

WHY WE LIKE IT: This 2-wheeled scooter has a durable all-metal frame, sleek design and comes with a 6-month warranty. It’s great for kids 8 & up who already know how to ride a 2-wheeled scooter and want to practice some tricks.

Pros
  • Durable metal frame holds up to 220 lbs
  • High performance ABEC 9 bearings, letting it maintain momentum better than most
  • Easy, 2-bolt assembly
Cons
  • May not be suitable for kids under 8yrs or beginners
  • Low profile wheels limit it to smooth surfaces
  • Pricier than some competing scooters

The Fusion Z250 is marketed as a beginning “trick” scooter, meaning it’s not intended to be a kid’s first scooter, but makes a great gift for one who is ready to forego training wheels and step up to a two-wheeled kids’ scooter.

You still turn by leaning on this one, but unlike with three-wheeled training scooters, the handlebars rotate 360-degrees, as on a BMX bike. The Fuzion Z250 is designed by trick scooter riding pros and it includes an aluminum deck with rails for grinding, a chromoly riser, extra grip handle bars and high performance ABEC 9 bearings in 110-mm aluminum core wheels. You might also want to read about the best folding mobility scooter.

 #4  Razor Kick Scooter

Award: Best Value/Best Budget for Kids 5+

WHY WE LIKE IT: The original Razor scooter design benefits from sturdy yet light aluminum construction and a unique folding mechanism, making it super portable. It also comes at a very affordable price. It’s great for kids ages 5 to about 12 looking for an inexpensive, classic scooter than can easily be folded up and packed for a trip to a friend’s house or the park.

Pros
  • Patented t-tube folding design makes it more portable than most
  • Long-lasting aluminum frame
  • Lightweight and maneuverable, at only 5 lbs
Cons
  • ABEC 5 bearings not as precise as some
  • Small, 98 mm wheels make it not as fast as our #2 pick, the Fuzion Z250
  • Not as stable as scooters designed for younger kids

Like a Kleenex or Zerox copier, the Razor scooter is one of those classic products so category-defining that people use its brand name as general name of what it is. Key to its iconic status among kids’ scooters is its handy folding design. Thanks to the Razor scooter’s patented t- folding handlebars, it’s easy to pack and carry with you.

The handlebars are also height adjustable, making the Razor scooter suitable for kids ages about 5- 12. It has a weight rating of up to 143 lbs. Aside from its trademark folding riser, the Razor scooter features durable aircraft aluminum construction that lets it weigh in at just 5 pounds.

 #5  Skidee Scooter for Kids

Award: Best for Kids Under 5

WHY WE LIKE IT: A convenient three-wheeled (led lights built-in) kids scooter with a folding seat, the Skidee also has folding handlebars. It’s great for families with very young children, since even toddlers can start riding this using the seat, then the seat can come off when they’re ready to stand and ride.

Pros
  • Folding, height adjustable handlebars
  • Folding, removable seat great for smaller children
  • 1-year warranty standard, optional 5-year warranty
Cons
  • Heavier than the Micro Kickboard Mini, our top pick for kids scooters
  • Wheels may scuff indoor surfaces
  • Limited appeal for older kids

The Skidee kids scooter is aimed at families with young children around kindergarten age who may also have elementary school age kids as well, or who want to buy a scooter toy that toddlers can safely sit on, yet can still have fun with once they’re ready to stand and ride. It features an innovative folding, removable seat that holds up to 44 lbs, plus, like the Micro Kickboard Mini and the Lascoota 2-in-1, it uses lean to steer technology, making it intuitive to learn on.

Another plus of the Skidee kids scooter is that, like the classic Razor, its handlebars fold up making it more portable. It also comes in a variety of colors and features light up LED wheels.

 #6  Scooter for Kids

Award: Best Budget for Kids Under 5?

WHY WE LIKE IT: A budget choice, half the cost of some little kids’ scooters, yet features an aluminum frame and folding handlebars. It’s great for families wanting a portable, convenient choice for kids ages 3 and up.

Pros
  • Folding handlebars
  • Light aluminum frame lets it weigh just 4.5 lbs
  • Three wheel design adds safety for younger kids
Cons
  • Limited color choice compared to the Skidee kids’ scooter (our #5 pick)
  • Not suitable for older school-age kids 8 and up
  • Awkward to maneuver, as front wheels turn instead of leaning to steer

This three-wheeled scooter is a bargain choice designed for little kids who are just getting the hang of riding scooter-type vehicles. It includes handlebars that fold up for easy carrying and storage, a big plus for family road trips, vacations and even going out to the park or a friend’s house. It comes in two color choices and benefits from an aluminum deck and riser for durability.

With black urethane wheels, it can be used indoors but may scuff some flooring surfaces. The bearings and wheels may also be a little louder than those on more flexible– but also more expensive–kids scooters from Micro Kickboard and Lascoota. Also, its steering mechanism is less sophisticated than on those “lean-to-steer” scooters, making it less responsive and somewhat harder to maneuver.

 #7  BELEEV Kick Scooter

Award: Honorable Mention for Kids Under 8

WHY WE LIKE IT: The BELEEV kick scooter has comparatively slick ABEC-7 bearings for smooth performance, plus lots of height adjustability. It’s great for larger families since it’s suitable for a wider range of ages than most kids scooters.

Pros
  • 4 levels of height adjustment on handlebars
  • ABEC-7 bearings make it roll more easily and more quietly than even some “big kids” scooters
  • Non slip plastic coated deck
Cons
  • Small rear wheel limits outdoor flexibility
  • Not as sleek or sophisticated asMicro Kickboard or Lascoota options
  • Handlebars don’t fold for storage or transport

The BELEEV Kick Scooter is a solid choice, especially when looking to accommodate kids of different ages and heights. It boasts a wider range of adjustability than most kids scooters on the market, letting it accommodate kids anywhere from 33 to 65 inches tall. It also supports up to 110 lbs.

Like the top choices in the kids scooter market, the Micro Kickboard Mini and Lascoota kids scooters, it employs a simple yet intuitive lean-to-steer mechanism, making it suitable for teaching even preschoolers to ride a scooter. The BELEEV also features bright LED lights in the wheels. Powered by the scooter’s motion, they require no batteries.

How we decided

In seeing which of the many kids scooters on the market today made the grade, we looked for well-tested products suitable for a range of ages from preschooler to tweens. For younger children, we choose three-wheeled scooters for added safety and stability. We selected models with indoor/ outdoor flexibility and metal or fiberglass-reinforced frames for durability. Extra credit went to kids scooters that folded up for easy carrying or included options like a removable seat or height adjustable handle-bars.

When looking to find the top performing scooters for older elementary school kids, we picked models with at least ABEC 5-rated bearings for low rolling resistance, long-wearing urethane wheels with aluminum inline-skate style cores, and metal construction for durability. We had to include the Razor scooter that virtually started the two-wheeled scooter trend, but we also threw in a somewhat more sophisticated scooter, the Fuzion Z250 (our #3 pick) aimed at trick riders and rated for up to 220 lbs.

The Relationship Between An Adult Electric Scooter’s Power And Speed

As mentioned, the larger the electric motor size, the more speed you get. So naturally lower priced scooters have smaller electric motors and lower top speeds. Motor size is measured in watts.

  • At the lower price range, you’ll find motor sizes around 250  watts and perhaps a 15.5 mile per hour top speed.
  • At the higher end of the price range, these motors can be as powerful as 5400 watts and give you a max speed of 40 miles per hour or more.
  • Then there is everything in between, offering a lot of options for how fast you want to go.

You can learn more about how these vehicles work here.

How To Determine Value Of An Electric Scooter

It’s important to realize that there is a scooter for everyone in every price range. What you spend will determine what you get. These days even the cheap scooters are quality made and safe.

Here are some things to think about when determining the value of your purchase:

  • How often will you use this vehicle?
  • Does your motorized electric scooter model have a maximum weight capacity that will support your weight? Make sure before you buy.
  • Do you have a lot of hills? Make sure your scooter is able to handle inclines.
  • Consider the scooter cost per mile
  • Will it keep your child entertained and outdoors for longer?
  • Will more than one person be using it?
  • Is the charging time acceptable?
  • Does this save wear and tear on your car with an electric scooter for commuting?
  • Do you have scooter friendly laws where you live?
  • Does it have safety features like disc brakes and a headlight?
  • Does it have enough shock absorbance for the roads you travel? This is important for offroad scooters as well.
  • Most important-Does it make your life more fun?

Think about these factors and determine if the value is worth or exceeds the money cost. This goes for both electric scooters for adult and for kids.

Now that we have answered the question “How Much Does A Electric Scooter Cost?”, maybe it’s time to upgrade from electric skateboards.

Moped vs Scooter – 6 Key Differences

Ever wonder what the difference is between a 50cc scooter and a moped? We have answers.

When it comes to the best electric scooter on the market, you have a few options. There are mopeds, and there are scooters. The moped vs. scooter argument is a heated one, and people tend to have varying opinions on the subject.

People often confuse mopeds and scooters, but they’re not the same thing. They are both a motorized vehicle, they operate on two wheels like a motorcycle, and they’re quite a bit smaller than a motorcycle. Let’s compare the two.

Definition

A moped is a lot like a bicycle. It has pedals and a small motor which means fewer cubic centimeters and less power than a scooter. They’re economical, however, because the pedals can be used in conjunction with the engine to save energy. Typically, with fewer than 49 cubic centimeters, it is considered a moped.

A scooter has a frame that you can step through with a platform to rest your feet. There are no pedals, so the engine powers the scooter. This engine displacement can range from 50 cubic centimeters up to 650.

A high end electric scooter is basically a moped with no seat.

Power

Mopeds also have elementary electrical systems that help power the motor. You can still drive a moped without the use of the motor, though. You can pedal a moped like a bicycle for propulsion, and you may not need the motor at all.

A scooter’s motor gives the vehicle power to move all the time, without the use of pedals. The electrical system is advanced enough to power the headlights and the ignition system, as well as to charge the battery.

Size

Despite the difference in motor size, the design of a moped is like a bicycle, with small or large wheels. They typically have something like a 36” bicycle tires, though. Scooters have smaller wheels, and the largest you will find are about 12” in diameter.

Legal Requirements

Most states in the United States put mopeds in a category with motorized bicycles. They don’t have to be registered, but you do have to have a valid driver’s license to operate a moped. They restrict the engine displacement and speed with a moped.

Scooters require registration, and you must have a motorcycle license to drive one because they are classified as such.

You are not limited in size with a cc scooter. The engine can be any size, and you can go at higher speeds if you abide by the limit. Scooter riders must also abide by helmet regulations.

Cost

In general, a cc moped is cheaper because it is smaller. The small internal combustion engine size helps bring down the upfront cost. Scooters tend to be more expensive because they have more complex, larger components.

You also have to consider purchasing insurance for your scooter, whereas you for a moped you don’t, because they don’t need to be registered.

Cultural Perception

Europe has a long history of scooter and moped use. In fact, in many European countries like Spain, Italy, and France, the roads are smaller, and engine sizes in most cars are much smaller than what we see in the US. It’s a common sight to see someone on a scooter almost everywhere you go.

In many Asian countries, too, you may see more than just a single passenger. Entire families will ride a single moped or scooter. It’s merely a way of life, however unusual we may think it is.

If you’re toying with the idea of getting a motor vehicle like a moped or scooter, keep these things in mind. One may suit your needs better than the other.

Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Review

You may know the Xiaomi Mi adult electric scooter from the Bird scooter rental service. If you’ve rented one of birds scooters you know how it performs, but if not, I recently tested this electric scooter and I have the full run-down below for those who are thinking about buying it. You can also check out our best electric scooter list to see some other options.

This foldable electric scooter is easy to use, portable when you need to carry it and it has some decent features like a max speed of 15.5 miles per hour and a range of 18.6 miles on a single charge. It even has a decent mobile app and battery life. Read on to see what my impressions were after spending many hours testing this personal transport.

Is The Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Worth The Price?

Sale
Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Review
A solid scooter at a decent price.

The Xiaomi Mi is a decent middle of the road electric scooter with decent speed and range, though it doesn’t have a lot of extra features. It’s nicely priced to get you from point A to point B and it does an admirable job, offering a smooth ride thank to large 8.5 inch pneumatic tires. The disc braking and eABS regenerative anti-lock braking system is very responsive and keep things safe.

Pros:

  • 18.6 mile range
  • Smooth ride
  • Lighter than most

Cons:

  • Max speed could be better
  • Not many features

Xiaomi Mi Build Quality And Design

While the design is pretty typical of what you expect from adult electric scooters today, this vehicle is more focused on reliability. It weighs in at 26.9 lbs with a 220 lb max load rider capacity. It looks minimal but sleek.

This model has an aerospace-grade aluminum frame that makes it durable and tough, ensuring that it will stand up to lots of use and be with you for years. It definitely feels solid under your feet. Not a stand out design ultralightweight adult electric scooter, but very nice.

Power

A powerful 250W electric motor is running the show and this is plenty to get you back and forth while commuting to work or having fun at 15.5 miles per hour. The 250w motor, a hub motor, is all of the power you need to get you to top speeds, flying down the road.

Charging Time

The battery charged in 5 hours when I charged the scooter, giving me a decent 18.6 mile commute. I would have liked a shorter charge time, but as I said, this scooter is focused on being a reliable mid-range vehicle, not a hot rod with all of the best specs.

This is still a good battery life charge time though. 18 + miles longrange battery is nothing to sneeze at. And there is also a handy energy saving mode to help with battery capacity. Charge the battery before every trip and you will be fine, no matter how many miles range you travel.

Performance

The Xiaomi Mi is a very comfortable and smooth ride. It’s no wonder Bird chose this model for their rental service over other scooters. It performed perfectly in all of my tests and I love that the brakes are nice and responsive.

Bottom Line

It has a Mi home app for checking your speed, power, stats and more. This smartphone app is easy to use too. This is the perfect electric scooter for anyone looking for a fairly priced mode of transport to work. The speed and longrange battery should work for just about anyone in a busy city or elsewhere. This is a very reliable and easy foldncarry design ultralightweight adult scooter that you are going to love. You will ride the scooter every day.

It turns out that this is one of the best electric scooters for commuting.

Ive ridden many electric scooters and this one stands out for being just a solid dependable model. It is also a lot of fun to ride. The Home app keeps all the info you need.

You may also want to check out other top picks like the Xiaomi M365, Xiaomi Mijia M365, and the M365 Pro.

NanRobot D4+ Electric Scooter Review

If you’re looking for a foldable best electric scooter that can handle commuting on the road and wild adventures off-road, the NanRobot D4+ electric scooter should be on your radar. It has power enough for any terrain and it is a decent performer. Two 1000W electric motors mean that this electric scooter is not messing around with motor power. Each of those motors powers a wheel giving you all-wheel-drive capabilities on two wheels.

NanRobot is one of the best electric scooter brands in the business and their experiences shows with this model.

But what else does this adult electric commuting and off-road beast offer? Is it a smooth ride? Is it worth the price? Is it the fastest electric scooter that I have ever ridden on? Read on and find out in my buyers guide below.

Is The NanRobot D4+ Really That Awesome?

We're sorry, this product is temporarily out of stock

Let me start out by answering the above question. Yes! This electric scooter from NanRobot really is pretty amazing. It has a top speed of 40 miles per hour, a 45-mile range on a fully charged battery and it certainly performs. I mean we’re talking all-wheel drive on a scooter! It is quite an experience. Most scooters don’t have that feature.

Pros:

  • 40 MPH top speed
  • All wheel drive
  • 45 miles range

Cons:

  • Expensive

NanRobot D4+ Build Quality And Design

The Nanrobot d4high speed scooter has a foldable design, which is great for storing it in tight spaces or carrying for short distances, like when you get on a train or a bus. Just collapse the handlebar, and take it with you using the folding mechanism. Although it is on the heavy side at around 60lbs. It’s made from super strong aluminum alloy, which makes this ride a durable one that will stand up to some tough riding and abuse.

As long as I’m talking about its rugged toughness, this high speed electric scooter has 6 shock absorbers & 10″ pneumatic tires. This not only makes for a smooth ride on the pavement but when you are off-road the shock absorption really absorbs every little bump. You can expect a comfortable ride no matter where you are using it.

The design is fairly minimal, with an LCD display, a voltage lock to prevent theft, a wide deck that is comfortable for your feet and a dual charging system that lets you use 2 chargers to charge it faster. I love that the NanRobot D4 high speed has this feature.

NanRobot D4+ Electric Scooter Power

It doesn’t get much more powerful than 2 1000W electric motors for a combined 2000w motor. This allows for some serious performance and a top speed of 40 MPH as well as all-wheel-drive that chews up any terrain. These powerful motors will impress anyone. Dual 1000w motors are the way to go.

Charging Time

NanRobot lists the charging time as 8-10 hours for the lithium battery, however, you can cut that in half thanks to the dual charging system. I loved nearly everything about this electric scooter, and this is a favorite feature. It has a great battery life and charge options.

Performance

With impressive top speed, an incredible range and power to spare, this pro scooter performs as great as you would think. Whether you are riding on pavement, mud, thick foliage with sticks and rocks, or anywhere else, it never falters. The pneumatic tires are smooth and gripping.

That maximum speed feels great and the max range of 45 mile range and 330lb load are amazing features. The range should fit nearly everyone’s range of riding and the 330lb load means that larger folks can ride. The rear disc brakes are also very responsive, which is a must for emergency braking.

Bottom Line

The NanRobot D4+ high speed electric scooter is expensive and that is the only downside here. But you get what you pay for. Everything here is top notch. Other electric scooters need to pay attention to this elite model. It feels like a mountain bike when riding, so I can see people giving up their electric bicycles or electric skateboards for this folding electric model. The D4 high speed electric scooter is my new favorite.

Some other great options if this scooter for adults is too powerful are the Glion Dolly foldable scooter, Gotrax GXL, Uberscoot 1600w, NanRobot D5, or the Xiaomi Mi. Of course, if you want one less wheel, there’s always electric unicycles. Our buying guides and vehicle review section have the answers you need before you buy adult electric scooters on Amazon. Just make sure you check price first.

QIEWA Qmini Electric Scooter Review

QIEWA makes some outstanding electric scooters. The Q1 Hummer 800 made our best electric scooters list so I had to have a look at the QIEWA Qmini Electric Scooter. It has a powerful but compact design, weighing just 48 pounds. It is one of the fastest and most versatile scooters on the market.

A 500 Watt brushless motor and 16 AH lithium ion battery run the show, delivering a max speed of up to 35 miles per hour, using 3 gears. This sleek bad boy also gives you a 38-mile range on a single charge.

Is The Qiewa Qmini Worth The Price?

We're sorry, this product is temporarily out of stock

Pros:

  • Great speed
  • Great range
  • Lots of features

Cons:

  • It may be expensive for some

Build Quality And Design

The design is rugged and tough, but at the same time, sleek and daring. Normally electric scooters don’t look this well engineered. It’s nice to see a design that stands out from the crowd.

The Qmini is also foldable so you can easily carry it when you need to, like when boarding a bus or a train, then you can unfold it again and be on your way.

Charging Time

This electric scooter takes 8-12 hours for a full charge, but when you consider that top speed and range, it’s a fair tradeoff.

Performance

The dual shocks in front and the dual shock suspension angled at 45° in the back make for a smooth ride even over bumpy and rough terrain. The 8 inch solid tires mean that you won’t have to worry about getting a flat or making sure that you have them at the right tire pressure. This scooter is a smooth and steady ride all day long.

Aside from a smooth ride, the QIEWA Qmini electric scooter comes with all of the features that you want in a scooter for fun or commuting. There are the headlights and taillights which are handy for night rides, a horn, multi-color LEDs along the sides of the deck, USB phone charging, an anti-theft alarm, and drum brakes.

Bottom Line

The QIEWA Qmini electric scooter is a robust vehicle with above-average speed, range, design, and features. It starts off compact, but once it is folded down, it is even more mini. You could fit a few of these in the trunk of your car. It handles nicely at any speed and the thumb throttle on the right handlebar is comfortable to use.

This electric scooter just feels great and performs amazingly. It is priced higher than much of the competition, but with features like this, it is worth every penny. You are getting what feels like a luxury scooter. QIEWA has done it again.
