How We Decided
We preferred highly durable two-wheel scooters with seats for adults and three-wheel electric scooters with seats for adults, and mobility scooters with an at least 250 watts (250w) electric motor for sufficient hill-climbing horsepower even at steep hill climbing angles, anti-lock brakes, disc brakes, hydraulic brakes, or double braking mechanisms, and a lithium battery that provides power for trips of no less than 9 miles. We liked motors capable of top speeds of at least 10 mph and preferably 20 mph.
We also preferred electric scooters that could carry at least 150lbs safely featured shock absorbers and suspension systems to increase riding comfort and durability, and which had easy to learn controls. We also liked scooters with ergonomic, comfortable handles that wicked off sweat for comfort and safety and extra-wide, padded removable and adjustable seats.
Finally, we preferred scooters with large-tread tires that were suitable both for mildly rough roads as well as city streets. We also liked scooters that had a light enough bodyweight to be reasonably portable without sacrificing durability and strength, and which had adjustable handles and safety features like lights, horns, an LED display, and rear-wheel drive. We did not look at scooters with high power off-road features like a turbo or dual engines

The Most Important Features to Consider
- Seat Design
If you’re looking at seated electric scooters, it’s important to consider whether you’ll want to be able to ride the scooter standing and if so, how easy to remove and adjust the seat is. The comfort from a padded seat is big to consider too, especially if you need it for your daily commute on uneven terrain. Extra-large seats are also desirable but can be less adjustable. They may be a great seat for adults with larger builds, but it may not be the most lightweight scooter. A removable seat shouldn’t take more than 20 seconds to remove, and to that end, quick release designs are featured on many removable seat models. Keep in mind as well that sometimes a non-removable seat will provide a more stable, comfortable ride, depending on the wheel design and frame. - Motor Wattage
A 250 watt (250w) engine is the most common in electric scooters, and while that amount of horsepower can be more than enough for a lot of offroading, you’ll generally want to look for a little more power to get the most out of your rides. With more horsepower usually comes a higher price point, so be prepared to spend a little bit more than you might for a casual commuter model- although some casual commuter models can double effectively as offroad motor vehicles- generally not at the lowest price points. A strong frame with a good weight capacity is important, but portability is a factor you’ll also want to consider since even if you don’t plan to travel with your scooter onto public transport, airports, shopping malls, or airports, you’ll find yourself having to carry it fairly frequently.
