We assembled a list of the best electric scooters for commuting, preferring scooters with a 250-watt motor, lightweight but sturdy frames for easy portability, a minimum of 12 miles on a single charge, intuitive controls, and extra safety and convenience features like shock absorbers, front and rear lights, and mobile app connectivity for iPhone and Android. When selecting the best electric scooter you’ll want to keep these things in mind.

Of the ten we listed, the Razor EcoSmart Metro is the best electric scooter for commuting. We liked it for its sturdy build, extra engine power, and a top speed of 18mph, eco-friendly battery, comfortable seat and handles, intuitive controls, and convenient back carrying basket.

Top 10 Best Electric Scooters For Commuting

#1  Razor EcoSmart Metro Electric Scooter

Award: TOP PICK

WHY WE LIKE IT: Easy to learn, sturdily built, ultra-comfortable, with high top speed and powerful rear-wheel drive makes it the most well-rounded, user-friendly option available.

  • Rear-wheel drive increases traction and control

  • Lower than average 40-minute travel per charge

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Razor EcoSmart Metro is a 500w rear-wheel drive electric scooter with a sit-down design and large, bike-like wheels. Featuring twice the horsepower of average commuter scooters and the added traction and control of the rear-wheel drive, it provides plenty of power for even very hilly and bumpy roads. We loved the comfortable, wide seat, wide footrest, and simple controls, and found the disc hand brake responsive and effective.

The Ecosmart’s eco-friendly battery does have a shorter per-charge travel range than many models at 40 minutes or 12 miles, but for average city commutes and around-town shopping it should be more than sufficient, and its cargo carrier makes it especially great for small shopping trips. Add in an extra powerful engine, smooth, easy, relaxing ride, simple, easy-to-learn controls, and lightweight but durable build, and it’s a perfect go-to for the average commuter. Much like the top-rated electric mopeds for adults that can go 40 minutes on a single charge.

#2  Segway Ninebot ES2 Electric Scooter

Award: HONORABLE MENTION

WHY WE LIKE IT: Multiple connectivity options, a convenient LED display, above-average 300w horsepower, and a good travel range among many other features make this a great all-around choice.

  • Stock tires not good for rougher surfaces

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Segway Ninebot ES2 is a 300w electric scooter with a top speed of 15mph and a travel range of up to 15 miles per charge. It features Bluetooth and mobile security and navigation app connectivity for iPhone and Android, switchable cruise control, and both mechanical and electric anti-lock braking systems.

We liked its easy-to-read LED display for mileage, battery power, and speed, and its relatively light weight and foldability made it easy to carry and put in a car trunk for trips. Its non-pneumatic, airless tires provide pop and flat tire-proof safety, but they’re not suitable for rougher roads and streets. Still, it’s a great value for a very modern, full-featured electric scooter with plenty of power for most normal terrain and extra-long commutes. For rougher terrains, consider the best off-road electric scooters that have high-capacity batteries.

#3  Glion Dolly Foldable Electric Scooter

Award: BEST PORTABLE DESIGN

WHY WE LIKE IT: Very portable and lightweight but sturdy and easy to drive, with enough horsepower for hills and enough battery power for most normal commutes.

  • Rear suspension only

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Glion Dolly is a variable-power 250w electric scooter with a top-end peak of 600w. It has a top speed of 15 mph and a range of 15 miles per charge. Its airless, never-pop tires and rear anti-lock brakes are made with safety in mind, and its light 26-pound foldable frame, built in-rolling wheels, and luggage bag make it a great choice for weekend car trips and air travel.

The lack of front suspension means it doesn’t provide as smooth a ride as some models. But its relatively generous horsepower, portability, safety features, and overall high build quality make it a great all-around choice for average-length commutes at a modest price point. The best 50cc scooter is also another affordable model that makes it easy to go around town.

 #4  Razor E100 Electric Scooter

Award: BEST ON A BUDGET

WHY WE LIKE IT: A vintage-style kickstarter, simple controls, foldability, and attractive colors make it a fun, economical option with just enough power for most shorter commutes.

  • Only 10mph top speed
  • 40 minutes of travel per charge
  • Lower than average horsepower at 100w

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Razor E100 is a 100w foldable electric scooter. It has a top speed of 10 mph and its battery provides 40 minutes of continuous riding per charge. We liked its novel kickstart mechanism and grip throttle, which are both easy to use for beginners and kids, and provides some old-school-style appeal. We also liked its super-quiet chain-driven motor.

It has among the lower top speeds on the market and its modest battery power makes it unsuitable for long commutes. However, its light 26lb weight, easy-to-learn, simple controls, bright colors, and large-grip front tire make it a safe, reliable choice for ages 8 and up and among the best values on the market that can still handle modest hills and inclines with ease. But for a real adventure on the hills, consider the best electric scooter for climbing hills.

 #5  Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter

Award: BEST QUALITY

WHY WE LIKE IT: A super light and foldable but durable aerospace-grade aluminum frame and advanced, a modern braking system for an award-winning, powerful option.

  • Charge only reaches maximum under specific conditions

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Xiaomi Mi is a 250w, Red Dot “Best of the Best” Award-winning electric scooter with a foldable 26lb aluminum alloy frame. It can reach a top speed of 15.5mph and has a maximum ride of up to 18.5 miles under specific conditions. We liked its intuitive controls and the Applecare-like repair program featuring great customer service that you’re enrolled into upon purchase. Its dual disc brakes and eABS anti-lock brakes also make it among the safest models available for steep terrain.

Its battery doesn’t provide the longest charge of models available that are capable of climbing hills, reaching 18.5 miles only under specific conditions. However, its safety features, repair program, a decent amount of horsepower, award-winning design, and fairly modest price point make it a go-to for an extremely reliable steep-terrain, short commute electric scooter, and arguably the best electric scooter for adults.

 #6  Swagtron Swagger 5 High-Speed Electric Scooter

Award: BEST LOAD CAPACITY

WHY WE LIKE IT: Packs tons of power and speed into a modest, light 250w motor with a high weight limit for bigger riders but plenty of portability and a stylish look.

  • Shorter charge than many at 6-11 miles

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Swagger 5 High Speed is a 250w electric scooter that boasts a top speed of 18mph and can take steeper terrain than many commuter models- up to 20 degree inclines depending on rider size. We appreciated its light frame and modern touches like mobile app connectivity for both iPhone and Android and its heavy-duty tires ensure a fairly smooth ride over speed bumps and similar road features, but its high weight carrying capacity of 320lbs was even more impressive.

With a maximum ride length per charge of 6-11 miles, its battery isn’t quite as efficient as some models on the market. However, its stylish appearance, modern features, extra speed and power, and super-strong frame make it the best electric scooter for heavier adults.

#7  Segway Ninebot ES4 Electric Scooter

Award: BEST FEATURES

WHY WE LIKE IT: Multiple connectivity options, a handy LED display, above-average 300w horsepower, and good range per charge among other features make it a great all-arounder.

  • Stock tires a bit small for rough roads

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Segway Ninebot ES4 is a 300w electric scooter with a top speed of 15mph and a travel range of up to 15 miles per charge. It has a generous amount of unusual, modern features such as Bluetooth and mobile app connectivity for security and navigation for iPhone and Android, switchable cruise control, and an advanced mechanical and electric double braking system.

Its convenient LED control panel displays mileage, battery power, and speed, and its non-pneumatic, airless tires provide flat tire-proof safety- but they may be less suitable than some for rougher roads. However, it’s a great price point for a highly modern, full-featured electric scooter that handles hilly city streets and longer commutes with ease. Another option for long commutes and more portability is the best folding mobility scooter with a top speed of 12mph.

 #8  Horizon Practical Electric Scooter

Horizon Practical Electric Scooter

Award: BEST POWERFUL MOTOR

WHY WE LIKE IT: A 500w motor with top-end horsepower of 800W to take on challenging roads and reach some of the highest speeds in commuter models.

  • Heavier than many at 40lbs

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Horizon Practical is a 500w electric scooter with a top-end horsepower output of 800w, making it among the most powerful commuter options available. It can reach top speeds of up to 25mph and take on 15 degree inclines easily, and features three powerful front LEDs and two powerful backlights for extra safety when traveling at high speeds.

We loved other safety and comfort features like a mud splash guard and front and rear hydraulic brakes, but at 40lbs, despite its foldable design, it outweighs most commuter models, reducing its portability somewhat. But the undeniable power, excellent 20 mile travel time per charge, speed and sturdy build, and its extra safety features make it a great choice for commuters who want to get there a little faster. A much faster option is any of the best top electric scooters that can go between 15 and 25MPH.

 #9  Razor E200 Electric Scooter

Award: BEST FOR YOUNG AND SMALL RIDERS

WHY WE LIKE IT: A good value for a light, very portable, fun and easy to drive, a safety-minded scooter with a lower top speed, perfect for after school jobs and smaller riders.

[su_column size=”1/2″][su_box title=”Pros” box_color=”#4DB227″ radius=”0″]

  • Quiet chain-driven motor
  • Top speed of 12mph for parents’ peace of mind
  • 40 minutes of travel time per charge

[su_column size=”1/2″][su_box title=”Cons” box_color=”#B2B9C3″ radius=”0″][su_list icon=”icon: ban” icon_color=”#B2B9C3″]

  • 152lb weight limit lower than many on market
  • Slightly heavier than average at 38lbs

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Razor E200 is a 200w electric scooter with a super-quiet single chain-driven motor. It features a top speed of 12mph and up to 40 minutes of continuous riding per battery charge. The low top speed makes it a great worry-free choice for parents to give kids with after-school jobs they need to commute to. It also makes it a good choice for small riders who don’t require a powerful engine to get around.

Though the 152lb weight limit is a good match for smaller and younger riders, for many average sized and larger adults it won’t be sufficient. It’s also slightly less easy to carry than some commuter models at 38lbs. But its very modest price point, balanced weight and center of gravity, and safety-oriented low top speed mean it’s a good choice for kids and small riders while still providing a practical commuting solution. Another option for your young ones is the best electric scooter for kids that is powered by an electric motor.

 #10  XPirit Electric Scooter

Award: BEST FOR BEGINNERS

WHY WE LIKE IT: Intuitive controls, three-speed modes, and enough power for steep rides make this a great go-to for the first-timer who needs a practical, reliable commuting option.

  • Lower (220lb) weight capacity than some

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The XPirit Electric scooter is a 250w foldable scooter with a fairly light 27lb durable aluminum alloy build and a top speed of 15mph. Three switchable power modes- Eco, Comfort, and Sport, allow riders to balance battery power and speed at their desire or enjoy cruise control for a more relaxing ride. We liked the small but easy-to-read LED control panel and display which allowed for easy switching.

Its intuitive controls help ease new riders in, and it provides enough power for most normal terrain,, but on the downside, its lower-than-average 220lb maximum weight capacity may not be sufficient for larger adults. On the balance, though, it’s a user-friendly, safety-minded choice for short to medium rides and a great value for anyone looking to change the way they approach their daily commute. Another good option for daily commute is the best folding electric scooter that has good horsepower and battery strength.

How We Decided

We preferred torque motor or chain-driven scooters with lightweight but sturdy or foldable frames for portability, which had a minimum engine power of 100 watts for sufficient climbing horsepower on average inclines and speed bumps, double braking mechanisms, and fast-recharging batteries which provided at least 40 minutes travel per charge under normal conditions.

We also generally preferred electric scooters with a maximum weight capacity of at least 225lbs which had intuitive, easy-to-learn controls and ergonomically designed handles and seats where applicable that reduced sweat buildup for safer and more comfortable riders.

We also liked scooters with built-in suspensions or shock absorbers for smoother rides and more durability, and which had extra convenience and tech features such as carrying baskets, LED displays, safety lights, and app and Bluetooth connectivity (iPhone and Android). For this list, we did not try to determine the best electric moped for commuting or the best kick scooter for commuting. We also generally didn’t look at steel frame scooters because of their higher price points and weight.

Best Electric Scooters For Commuting Buyer’s Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Safety Design
A number of features can go into the design of an electric scooter where safety is concerned, but probably first and foremost will be the scooter’s stopping power- determined largely by its brake design. Double braking systems with anti-lock brakes are something to look for in any scooter to be used in high-traffic and/or hilly city streets like those in San Francisco. Drum brakes and disc brakes are standard, though sometimes more advanced tech like eABS is featured. The maximum weight capacity is also important to pay attention to, as are features like ergonomically designed handles that keep hands dry and prevent slippage and suspensions or shock absorbers that provide a smoother, safer ride. Extra safety features like back and front safety lights or throttle limiters are good to look out for as well.
  2. Engine Power
Commuting in most cities will involve traveling over speed bumps, going up and down hills, and beyond that, a scooter that’s too slow isn’t a practical choice for commuting, so while extremely high horsepower isn’t a necessity like it may be for racing, off-roading, or other more professional applications, you still want to know the scooter you choose can fill your needs. A 250 watt (250w) engine is the average for commercial scooters and will provide more than enough horsepower for most commuter’s needs, but lower power scooters can still provide enough boost for many commuters. 100w motors can be more than sufficient for average and smaller sized riders, especially in flatter environments, so take your size and the terrain of your normal commute into account here, especially keeping in mind that more horsepower generally also means a higher price point. Regardless, most of your options will keep you well under the speed limit for city streets.
  3. Balance Weight with Durability
A strong frame with a good weight capacity is important, but portability is a factor you’ll also want to consider since even if you don’t plan to travel with your scooter, you’ll find yourself having to carry it fairly frequently. Most commercial electric scooters made for commuters and kids are rated for a weight limit of around 250lb- plenty for most adults- but their weights can vary wildly. Professional-grade scooters with high-power turbo-grade motors will be heavier, less portable, and more costly than most commuters need. Again, keep your actual needs in mind when looking at product descriptions.
  4. Battery Life
Lithium battery packs or a lithium-ion battery are standard in most electric scooters, but charge times and the amount of travel one charge allows can vary quite a bit even amongst purpose-built commuter models. Many models feature batteries made for up to 15 miles of travel before they need recharging, which will be more than sufficient for most city commuters. However, some models designed with young riders in mind will have significantly shorter travel time/distance per charge numbers that may prove too underpowered for work commutes or long-range rides, while conversely, models with high-power batteries made for long trips will generally be heavier and considerably pricier. Balance your needs accordingly and pay close attention to product details.

Electric Moped FAQs

Are electric scooters safe?

Generally speaking, electric scooters are a fairly safe mode of transport. However, there’s a large range of engine power, top speeds, extra safety features like shock absorbers and front and rear suspension, and tire and frame builds on the market, and the level of safety of each model, therefore, is variable. The safest models will generally be the ones with high weight capacities, airless or non-pneumatic tires that are pop and flat tire-proof and low maintenance, double-braking systems, and lower top speeds (10-15mph).

Why are electric scooters good for commuting?

Several key factors make electric scooters a great choice for commuting. They’re generally four to five times as fast as walking, and not having to sit in traffic can make them even faster than cars in some cases, while still being generally safe. Moreover, their compact size means they can be ridden in smaller spaces where cars, motorcycles, and larger scooters and mopeds can’t always go. Additionally, most are fairly lightweight and many are foldable and have carrying handles, meaning they’re also great for taking on vacation or bringing onto public transportation if need be. Being battery-powered with an electric motor, they’re also far more environmentally friendly than cars and other fossil-fuel dependent vehicles. Some even feature digital-era amenities like mobile device connectivity that working professionals will appreciate.

Are electric scooters safe to drive in the rain?

This can vary substantially from model to model and product descriptions aren’t always clear on the matter. Some models have exposed electronic or mechanical parts that aren’t necessarily waterproof or designed for water resistance, and some have wheels that aren’t ideal for wet roads. These are electric engines and therefore can short circuit. Generally, if a scooter is designed to be water and/or rain-safe, it will say so in the product description. So though some models may be fine in wet conditions, or at the very least, driving through puddles, it should always be assumed that any scooter you’re looking at isn’t water and rain-safe unless it’s explicitly stated in the description.

What’s the best electric scooter for commuting?

The Razor EcoSmart Metro is the best scooter for commuting. We liked it for its sturdy build, extra engine power and a top speed of 18mph, environmentally friendly battery, comfortable seat and handles, and convenient back carrying basket.
