How to Charge Electric Scooter Without the Charger

You might think your electric scooter is done for good if your battery dies and your charger is not working, but that’s not so. In this article, we’re going to tell you how to charge any of the top electric scooters without the charger. Any one of the options down below could help get your batteries charged back up and your e-scooter back on the road.

Option 1: Order a New Charger from Your E-scooter’s Manufacturer

This option is a surefire way to get your scooter back on the road, but it is also the most time-consuming. You will have to wait for your scooter’s charger to arrive in the mail, but you can be confident that it will do the trick to charge your ride back up. Common Steps and Tools for Charging an Electric Scooter without the Charger

There are three methods to charge your electric scooter without the charger: replacing the charger, using a portable car jumper, and using a variable power supply. While just purchasing a replacement charger from your E-scooter’s manufacturer won’t take many tools, it will involve a lot of time waiting for your charger to arrive in the mail. So, if you choose to charge your electric scooter without the original charger, these are the common steps for most electric scooters. Remember, it is also important to know how to check if your e-scooter motor is bad since it is prone to fail from time to time.

Removing and Reinstalling the Electric Scooter Battery

For the two methods for recharging your scooter battery without the charger, this is the first step. This is important to disperse the heat from your battery as it charges. There might be some slightly different steps depending on the model scooter you have, so see your E-scooter’s manual to determine where these steps might differ.

STEP 1REMOVE THE SCREWS

Most electric scooter batteries are held in place with a few screws and a plate holder. Removing these will allow us to gain access to the battery.

STEP 2 DISCONNECT THE BATTERY

There will be two wires connecting your battery to the scooter engine’s negative and positive terminals. There are usually clips or slide hatches here.

STEP 3 POSITION THE BATTERY FOR CHARGING

Your battery needs to rest in a cool and dry space before you hook up alternative charging methods. Keep it clear from any fire hazards such as loose paper or cloth.

Option 2: Charge Electric Scooter with a Portable Car Jumper

STEP 1 REMOVE THE ELECTRIC SCOOTER BATTERY

Follow the steps above to gain access to your battery and place it in a dry space.

STEP 2CONNECT THE PORTABLE JUMPER

Connect the jumper’s red cable to the positive port and then connect the jumper’s black cable to the battery’s negative port. Double-check all your connections and make sure they are secure and leak-free.

STEP 3 TURN ON THE JUMPER

Turn your jumper on and the current will start to fill the cells of the battery. Keep the battery on charge for about 20 minutes, and check the temperature of your battery. If the battery is hot, then it is most likely more than half charged. That said, don’t let the battery get too hot because overheating is a possibility.

STEP 4 DISCONNECT THE JUMPER

Turn off the jumper and disconnect the cables. Remove the black jumper cable first and then remove the red jumper cable. Let the battery cool for a few minutes.

STEP 5 REINSTALL THE BATTERY

Follow the steps above, reconnect the battery to the electric scooter motor, and then the plate and screws.

Option 3: Charge Electric Scooter with a Variable Power Supply

Time Required: 20 minutes (3 – 8 hours charge time)

STEP 1 REMOVE THE ELECTRIC SCOOTER BATTERY

STEP 2 CONNECT THE POWER ADAPTER

Connect the black cable to the negative electrode and then connect the red cable to the positive electrode.

STEP 3 SET THE VOLTAGE

Most batteries require the voltage to be set to 4.20V/cell. You will have to estimate here, but you may also be able to find this information in your scooter’s manual or by contacting the manufacturer.

STEP 4 SET THE CURRENT

Look up the capacity of your battery and set the current to 20%. Too much current could ruin your battery, so it’s best to rule on the side of caution when determining the current. For example, if your battery is rated for 10Ah, then set the output of the power supply to 2Ah

STEP 5 WAIT FOR CHARGE

This will take some time, so make sure your battery is in a safe place free from fire hazards. The average charge time of an electric scooter is about 3 to 8 hours, but it could take longer. When the power supply’s current falls to 3% of the scooter battery’s rated capacity(Ah), your scooter should be fully charged.

STEP 6 REINSTALL THE BATTERY

Disconnect your battery from the power supply and let it rest for about five minutes. Then, reinstall your battery by following the steps above, but in reverse.
