If you want your professional photo printout to come out good looking, inkjet photo printers are the best. The Canon Pixma Pro-100 inkjet photo printer comes with a very modern-looking light gray design. But you don’t purchase a printer for its looks, do you? You want to know how it performs. In short, it performs very well in all aspects, making it the best photo printer in its price class. It is also the best large format printer and one of the best printers for cardstock papers in this price range.

Why We Like It – Canon Pixma Pro-100

The Canon Pixma Pro-100 overall is a fantastic inkjet photo printer for all the professional photographers out there. It delivers on all fronts and doesn’t lack in any particular category. Also, the Canon Pro plug-in software (compatible with Adobe Photoshop CS4/CS5/CS5.1, Adobe Photoshop Elements 8/9/10, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.7/3, and Canon Digital Photo Professional 3.12 or later) works exceptionally well and provides very high quality prints.

Pros
  • High quality prints up to 4800 x 2400 DPI
  • AirPrint support
  • Supports 13 x 19 Inches fine art papers, great to pair up with high-end digital cameras
Cons
  • The print-head gets clogged way too many times after extensive usage

Speed

Well, as is the case with most professional-grade photo printers, it prints out about three sheets per minute (8.5″ X 11″ photo paper). Some might consider it as very slow, but historically, photo printers have been pretty slow over the years. Part of that has to do with the high-resolution print quality. We’ll be going over that in the next section. If you really need faster print speeds and don’t care about the quality, just get the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 instead.

Print Quality

This printer’s max DPI comes at around 4800 x 2400, which is more than enough for printing out a professional photo edited in Adobe Photoshop using the Canon Pro plug-in. In fact, you can’t find this kind of resolution at this price in any other professional photo printer. So that’s another win in Canon’s book.

Efficiency

The Canon Pixma Pro 100, unlike many other inkjet printers, is actually very efficient when it comes to ink cartridge usage. So the way Canon achieves this is by separating the ink tank into individual CLI 42 ink tanks (black, gray, light gray, cyan, photo cyan, magenta, photo magenta, and yellow). So, you can only replace the particular ink cartridges that run out, saving money in the process.

Advanced Features

This Canon photo printer is a wireless printer, so obviously, it has Wi Fi. And on top of that, it supports AirPrint. Also, you can download the Canon Easy-PhotoPrint app to print out photos from your Android device. But, if you are not going to use any of that, it doesn’t make sense to shell out more than $600 for this printer. In that case, go for the cheaper Canon Pixma iX6820.

Value

With its vast array of features, the Canon Pixma Pro-100 provides quite an incredible value for money aspect for all the photography enthusiast buyers. Our only nitpick would be the printer-head quality, but the Canon store customer service is pretty good, and they should be able to help you out within the warranty period.

Canon Pixma Pro-100 Wrap Up

The Canon Pixma Pro-100 is excellent overall. If you are upgrading from something like the HP OfficeJet 3830, you can really feel the difference in quality on this printer.
