There exist two camps when it comes to the best 4K gaming monitor: ones with a laundry list of features and other gaming monitors for a singular purpose. Naturally, as more features are added, the higher the cost. The Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ is one such monitor, built with style in mind as well as performance. Is the price tag worth the host of features or is it out of reach? If you’re looking for a gaming monitor on a budget, take a look at our Dell IN1930 18.5 inch HD LED monitor ($90 and ships free) review. If money is no problem, take a look at our shortlist of the best computer monitors.

Why We Like It – Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ

The Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ does more than achieve 4K ultra HD resolution. With its excellent image quality, G-Sync technology, and HDR, it can be a bridge for both gaming and as a workstation. Just like you’d expect from Asus, including the Asus ROG Swift PG279Q that we discuss in our review.

Pros
  • G-Sync HDR technology
  • Excellent color recreation
  • 144Hz refresh rate
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Need a powerful rig

Performance

The ROG Swift PG27UQ is built for quality. To compound its 4K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate with 4ms response time, and HDR, its IPS panel is built with quantum dot technology that takes advantage of a wide DCI-P3 color gamut. Colors are more heavily saturated, but not to its determinant. Instead, the quantum dot display makes colors brighter and, more importantly, accurately represented. Compared to the Asus MG28UQ 4K, having a more realistic color pallet makes gaming pop.

However, to get the most out of the monitor’s 144Hz refresh rate, you actually need a high-end computer capable of handling it. But if you come below the required specifications, G-Sync will kick in to smooth out any screen tearing.

Design

The design has Republic of Gamers written all over. A thick bezel surrounds the 27-inch screen with rounded corners, all of which lead to the back where you’ll see a large ROG logo. Accompanying the logo are strange grooves that look very much like a circuit board. It’s there you’ll find dual USB 3.0 ports, a single HDMI 2.0 port, an earphone jack, and DisplayPort 1.4.

The Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ sits on a three-legged stand that fans out. What the stand hides well is its ability to swivel, turn, and tilt at various angles. You can pivot the monitor on its side, an entire 90 degrees, for portrait view. The monitor has no problem accommodating different viewing angles.

Value

The ROG Swift PG27UQ will set you back at least $1,300. Now, that’s a hefty price tag, but what you get in return is a monitor jam-packed with features. Unlike the LG 27MP59G-P, where the goal is to simply reach 4K at 75Hz. You’re getting more bang for your buck with the Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ.

This isn’t a monitor you buy on a whim; it’s very forward-thinking, with the capability of being your main monitor for the next few years. Being manufactured by a reputable and trusted manufacturer, you know it’ll last that long, too.

Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ Wrap Up

The Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ is expensive, even after two years of being on the market. However, the biggest difference now is modern, high-end computers are far more capable of taking advantage of its features, especially with NVIDIA’s G-Sync technology and the best graphics cards to date.

With a quantum dot display providing near-perfect color representation, 27-inch screen, and 4K resolution, it hits all the sweet spots. And with how accurate the colors are, you can easily set this monitor up at your workstation if you’re in the business of editing photos and videos, not just as a gaming monitor.

While the Acer Predator XB271HK comes close in terms of performance and specifications, such as G-Sync technology and an IPS panel, I would recommend the Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ if you’re looking for one of the best monitors on the market both in terms of style and performance.
