Why We Like It – Acer R240HY

The Acer R240HY, otherwise known as Acer R240HY bidx, is a solid choice for both gaming on consoles and as a workstation monitor if you’re on a budget. With full HD, reasonable refresh rate, and IPS panel, you’re getting a smooth experience with great image quality. Compare the Acer with our AOC Ultra-Slim i2757FH 27in HD display review for a slightly larger option.

Pros
  • Great color accuracy
  • Excellent viewing angles
  • Full HD 1080p
Cons
  • Lacks a DisplayPort input
  • No built-in speakers
  • Better options in this price range

Performance

The Acer R240HY performs well at 1080p with a 24” screen size if you’re gaming on a PS4. Refresh rate is 60Hz, which is where the PS4 is locked at. Any higher and it would be a waste. Compare the Acer with our slightly larger and touch compatible ViewSonic TD2740 review.

Unlike the BenQ EL2870U, the Acer R240HY lacks HDR, but as an IPS monitor, it has better color accuracy than a TN panel with minimal light bleed, outputting 16.7 million colors and a 100 million:1 contrast ratio.

Your viewing experience isn’t hindered either, considering IPS panels lose very little quality when viewed at an angle. This allows the option of using the Acer R240HY in a multi-display setup. Alternatively, if you’d like another recommendation for your multi-display setup, checking out the Acer V277U isn’t a bad choice.

Design

The Acer R240HY monitor has a sleek design. Incredibly thin bezels surround the IPS display, giving it a zero frame design. The stand itself is an appealing O-shape. Unfortunately, it only tilts. Fortunately, viewing angles are not a problem.

Behind the screen you’ll find a single HDMI, DVI, and VGA ports, but lacking DisplayPort, unlike the LG 27UK650-W. You’ll also find that it doesn’t have built-in speakers. However, with audio-out, you can pair it with a set of speakers. There’s enough connectivity options to use the Acer R240HY as a gaming monitor.”

Value

Consider this Acer monitor is full HD, has great color accuracy, and a smooth 60Hz, it has all the key features you need for gaming on a PS4. While IPS monitors typically have slower response times, which is 4ms, it’s a small price to pay for better picture quality. If you want a monitor with 144HZ, take a look at our AOC G2460PQU review.

Since its design provides several connectivity options, the Acer R240HY is capable of being a solid option for casual gaming on PC. Furthermore, its price range allows for the option to purchase two for a workspace environment without breaking the bank. For more serious PC gaming, look to the Asus VG245H, which reduces screen tearing and stuttering with FreeSync.

Acer R240HY Wrap Up

The Acer R240HY 24” widescreen monitor is a great option for budget builds, especially paired with a PlayStation 4. With the PS4 maxing out at 60Hz, the monitor’s maximum refresh rate isn’t being wasted and you’re still getting great picture quality at 1080p with excellent viewing angles.

With that said, it’s lacking DisplayPort and built-in speakers. Unless you have a pair of speakers lying around, you’ll have to buy a set. That’s another bill to consider. While better options do exist, you’re still purchasing a product from a company that’s well known.
