If you’re a camper searching for the best grills, specifically the best camping grill, might I suggest the Weber 121020 Go-Anywhere charcoal grill? It’s about as do-it-yourself as a grill can be because it’s charcoal-based, and it’s exceptionally wind-resistant for being so lightweight and portable.

Why We Like It – Weber 121020 Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill

The Weber 121020 Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill is a true camper’s grill of choice. It’s charcoal-based, so you’ll have to rely on your own ability to start a fire when you use it (please be careful when starting fires), and it’s big enough to feed four hungry campers after a long day’s hike.

Pros
  • More Than Enough Grilling Space for Steaks and Veggies
  • Wind-Resistant
  • Lightweight and Portable
Cons
  • Harder to Clean

Power/Heating

Like the Weber Summit Charcoal grill, the Weber Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill is, as you may have guessed, a charcoal grill. Cooking with charcoal is a culinary art form and is completely arbitrary as to how much heat it can produce. It cannot, and should not, be compared to grilling directly over a flame provided by gas or propane. If a gas or propane grill is something you look for, check out the Blackstone Table Top Grill.

Size/Versatility

TheWeber Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill has a respectable cooking area of about 140 square inches. While this may not be quite as large as, say, the Weber Q1000, it’s still an acceptable amount of cooking space. You’ll still be able to fit four medium-sized steaks plus your vegetables on the grill comfortably

Durability

At just shy of nine pounds, the Weber Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill is easily portable. It won’t cause any undue strain going from the car to the campsite. And despite its lightweight, it’s still heavily wind-resistant thanks to the plated steel legs and cast-iron body, and porcelain-enameled lid. The cast-iron lid also retains heat, making it easier to cook if the lid is closed too. For a similarly lightweight portable, high-end Weber grill, you can also check out the Weber Q1200.

Ease of Use

While the lid may be porcelain-enameled, the steel grate is not and thus makes for a slightly more difficult cleaning experience as the meat won’t just peel off and will most likely stick. It’s not something a little soap and water can’t fix though. The charcoal will leave behind some residue too, so make sure you’re cleaning up that area too.

Value

At $100, we don’t think you’ll be able to find a portable charcoal grill that’s as versatile, durable, and easy to use as the Weber 121020 Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill. There is some assembly required out of the book, but it’s just a single action and should take you no longer than 10 minutes. And if you prefer the smoky taste of meat, a charcoal grill is the only one that can provide that.

Weber 121020 Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill Wrap Up

Charcoal grills are always going to be harder to clean, and the Weber 121020 Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill is no exception to this rule. But that’s the price you’re going to have to pay for more natural-tasting, smokey-flavored meat. And I for one am willing to make this trade.
