How We Decided

We preferred infrared grills that cooked at maximum temperatures of no less than 600 degrees. We liked grills with safety features like handles and housing that keep external heat down for safer use and handling and auto-off functions, as well as durable, industrial-grade steel construction.

We also preferred infrared grills with removable grease traps, cooking grates, and other removable dishwasher-safe or easy-clean parts. We liked grilling surfaces with features like porcelain coating for semi-non-stick functionality and easier cleaning, capacities of at least 25lbs of food items, and grilling surfaces of at least 100 square inches.

Finally, we preferred grills that employed Ceramic Infrared Burner or radiant glass heating systems for the highest maximum heat or hybrid infrared/gas grills to provide low-temperature recipe functionality. We also like grills that feature a variety of control options, including automatic cooking programs, multiple manual temperature dials, smoker compartments for smoking meats and fish, and indicator lights for pre-heating and for monitoring cooking times.

Best Infrared Grills Buyer’s Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Capacity
An infrared grill is an advanced, complex piece of cooking technology capable of cooking temperatures not found in other grill and oven types. With that also comes higher price points than often found in traditional grill types. Therefore it would be a waste of such technology to make a grill that wasn’t capable of cooking larger amounts if need be. Any infrared grill worth investing in then should have a capacity of at least 20lbs of food for closed barrel-shape types, or for more standard flat open grill types, be able to cook at least two large steaks simultaneously. Thankfully, most of the best infrared grills available offer such capacities, so their size beyond those basic requirements is a matter of your needs.
  2. Maximum and Minimum Temperatures
One of the main advantages of infrared grills is that they are capable of producing cooking temperatures unrivaled by other consumer grill types. Whereas conventional grills and ovens alike typically don’t go beyond maximum temperatures of 500 degrees, many infrared grills are capable of temperatures of up to 1000 degrees, with far shorter preheating times than traditional grills allowing cooking possibilities generally not available in non-professional kitchens. On the downside, many infrared grills aren’t actually capable of the lower temperatures of traditional ovens and grills, which means they won’t be suitable for recipes and meal types that can’t be executed at 500-plus degrees. When purchasing an infrared grill, keep in mind that temperature limitations can work both ways.
  3. Easy To Clean and Safe
Despite the high temperatures infrared grills cook at, they’re generally as safe or safer than traditional grills, with more controlled, even heating and designs to prevent flare-ups where grease or oil from food catches flames. That said, their high temperatures obviously require some degree of caution during use. For that reason, safety features like heat-resistant handles and housing that remain relatively cool for safer handling, and lights and other indicators for preheating are good to look for. Another advantage of infrared grills is their innovative cleaning function- most infrared grills clean inner elements by burning off excess or leftover foodstuffs, which are turned to ash and easily collected for disposal. For sections of the grill that can’t be cleaned using this method, being removable dishwasher safe are qualities to look for.

Infrared Grills FAQs

Are infrared grills safe?

Despite their increased cooking temperatures, infrared grills are as safe to use or arguably safer than conventional grills. Flare-ups not uncommon with traditional grills are all but eliminated because fats and oils vaporize on contact with the high tech, high- heat heating elements. Additionally, most infrared grills are constructed with high test steel housings and feature external parts like handles that keep cool for safer handling. That said, the extremely high cooking temperatures of infrared grills obviously present some inherent dangers compared to many traditional grills. Using requires care and respect for their technology and the incredible heat- with some models up to 1000 degrees- they generate.

What are the main advantages of infrared grills?

The main advantage of infrared gas grills is they are far hotter than conventional units. The grilling temperature can easily reach 700 degrees F. This gives you the flexibility of having a quick barbeque. You will spend less time standing next to the grill. Beyond that, due to far better heat distribution (and higher temperatures), they are more fuel-efficient than conventional grills- some infrared grills can use up to 30% less fuel than their traditional cousins. Not only is this more environmentally sound, but it’s more economical as well.

What are the disadvantages of infrared grills?

Firstly, infrared grills tend to come at higher price points than similar models using conventional heating methods, which makes sense given the advanced technology they employ and the high performance and professional results they can produce. That said, there are affordable options available that provide the performance of their pricier counterpoints, though often with fewer bells and whistles. The other main disadvantage is that many models aren’t actually capable of lower temperatures like those found in conventional models- say in the 300-degree range. This means that though infrared grills can excel at high heat functions like getting the perfect sear on a premium steak, they may not be suitable for lower temperature recipes and meal types, limiting their functionality as general-use grills. Be mindful of the minimum temperature capability of the grill you invest in if you do want more general-use functionality out of it.

What’s the best infrared grill?

The best infrared grill will feature high test stainless steel housing construction and have minimum cooking temperatures of no less than 600 degrees, feature a smokeless or low-smoke and flare-up-proof design that keeps flames away from direct food contact, and feature porcelain-coated or radiant glass heating elements for easy, safe heat cleaning. Additional features like cool-touch handles or housing, light indicators for preheating, removable dishwasher-safe parts for easy cleaning, and accessories for more functionality like smoking compartments are also good to look for.
