For those loving the 2-in-1 design, and looking to give their kids their first laptop, the HP Pavilion X2 Detachable is ideal. It goes from being a competent laptop, to a competent tablet in one swift movement.

Power & Performance
The hardware, however, is nothing to write home about. It was fitted with an Intel Atom x5-Z8350, a 4-core CPU clocking in at 1.44 GHz with Turbo up to 1.92 GHz, but backed by only 2GB of RAM. The HP Spectre X360 13 8th Gen’s Intel Core i5 is substantially better, by far, but the HP Pavilion runs in 1280×800, so there’s nothing terribly taxing on the system.

Battery
Compared to the Lenovo 300E, the HP Pavilion X2 Detachable has a slightly better battery by 1.5 hours, lasting up to 9.5 hours. With a few adjustments to power settings, you’ll constantly hit that mark.
Ports & Expandability
You’ll find a hodgepodge of ports along the sides, both modern and current gen ports. Along the right side is a USB 2.0, USB Type C, mini HDMI, a microSD card slot for expanding on the small solid state drive, and an audio jack on the left side. There’s also an HP TrueVision HD webcam which offers surprisingly good colors.

Build Quality
Plastic has always been a hallmark of cheaper laptops, and the HP Pavilion X2 Detachable isn’t any different. There’s a slight amount of flex, but otherwise fine. However, the keyboard is a bit small. It’ll definitely fit better in the hands of kids. The HP Chromebook 14 is slightly tougher, but still plastic.
Value
For an adult, the HP Pavilion X2 Detachable will be lost on you. Its performance simply doesn’t hit what you’d want from it. But for a kid? Absolutely! In fact, it’s a great option for your child’s first laptop. And the best part is its price—so you and your kid ends up being happy campers.
