Why We Like It – Sceptre E255B-1658A

The Sceptre E255B-1658A proves having a 4K resolution isn’t imperative to gaming by maximizing the potential of 1080p with a few key features like increased refresh rate and a faster response time. If your system can’t handle 4K, or you lack the funds, the Sceptre E255B-1658A 24” monitor still feels like a meaningful upgrade and can be considered one of the leading 24-inch gaming monitors.

Pros
  • 1080p resolution doesn’t require a powerful rig
  • AMD FreeSync reduces screen tearing
  • Fantastic pricing
Cons
  • Poor quality built-in speakers
  • Stand only allows tilting up and down

Performance

Gaming at 1080p is never a bad experience until screen size becomes too large—a problem the Sceptre E255B-1658A doesn’t have due to a 24.5” screen. However, the real MVP is its refresh rate of 165Hz with AMD FreeSync. Should your system drop below 165 frames, AMD FreeSync will kick in to reduce screen tearing and stuttering for a smoother experience.

No one wants laggy screen times, it doesn’t make for the best curved gaming monitor if the display can’t keep up with you.

The Sceptre E255B-1658A is built with a TN panel, providing a 1ms response time. While IPS panels have better image quality and contrast ratio, the picture quality on the Sceptre E255B-1658A monitor is nothing to scoff at with a solid 1,000:1 contrast ratio and displays 16.7 million.”

Design

The design of the Sceptre E255B-1658A is simple, but effective. It has ultra-thin bezels, but it isn’t borderless, which opens up the option for multi-display setups. The best design choice was the sturdy stand made of metal rather than hard plastic. However, it’s severely lacking in freedom of movement by only allowing tilting, unlike the Asus VG245H gaming monitor.

The Sceptre E255B-1658A does lack a decent set of speakers. They sound cheap and lacking in bass, giving it a tinny sound. This can be rectified with the audio-out port located in the back, along with two HDMI ports (one is 2.0, the other 1.4) and a single DisplayPort input.(1.2). It’s nearly on par with the Asus ROG PG279Q in terms of inputs.

Value

As far as gaming monitors go, the Sceptre E255B-1658A isn’t a monitor to turn your nose at. It may not be 4K like the Asus ROG Swift PG348Q, but the Sceptre E255B-1658A has much faster refresh rates and response time, making it an excellent choice for competitive gaming without the need to invest in expensive hardware. This is a great option for gamers on a budget alongside the best cheap gaming monitors.

When you boil it down, the two most important features in gaming are high frame rates and having near-the-speed-of-light response time.”

Sceptre E255B-1658A Wrap Up

The Sceptre E255B-1658A does exceptionally well at providing an eSports experience at 1080p. Pushing for a higher refresh rate rather than resolution is not only the better option, but it doesn’t tax your system. AMD FreeSync can pick up any strangling frames. The speakers are poor and it only supports tilt, but you’re still getting a really great deal on a budget gaming monitor.
