The Option GlobeSurfer III 3G Router Isn't Mobile, But It Sure Is Fast

It would seem that 3G routers are becoming all the rage these days.  The one’s we’ve seen in recent, though, are designed for the on the go types who are looking to liberate their coffee sipping buddies from the exuberantly priced AT&T WiFi Hotspots.  Option’s GlobeSurfer III on the other hand, is designed for the home or small business.  It’s based on the Qualcomm 7225 chipset and assuming you can score the appropriate HSPA signal (I don’t know any offering it here in the US) you’ll be able to suck down 7.2 Mbps or upload at 5.76Mbps.  And because the Globesurfer III is built for a stationary environment, (it’s also wall mountable) Option has included a few USB ports for sharing devices over the network; not too shabby for a router.

Option Shipping Stylish New Wireless Router: the GlobeSurfer III

LEUVEN, BELGIUM–(Marketwire – January 22, 2009) – Option N.V. (EURONEXT Brussels: OPTI; OTC: OPNVY), the wireless technology company, today announced that it is shipping a new 3G wireless router to mobile operators, distributors and Value Added Resellers. Offering businesses and households a versatile communications hub that creates an instant Wi-Fi hotspot the GlobeSurfer III enables multiple users to share a superfast HSPA broadband connection.

A USB interface turns the GlobeSurfer III into a central hub: connecting an external hard disk drive via the device’s USB interface allows users to share or back-up important files to a central storage system; multimedia files such as MP3’s or AVI’s can be streamed across the Wi-Fi network; a central printer can be shared by all members of the household or business. Basic and advanced functionality is all managed from the device’s intuitive user interface incorporating a vibrant colour display indicating functions, events and device activities.

Option placed significant emphasis on product design during the development of the GlobeSurfer III: the device will not look out of place among the many stylish consumer electronic devices commonly found in the modern home. With its completely wireless configuration the GlobeSurfer III can be wall-mounted or sit on a desktop or shelf. This allows the router to be placed anywhere in the home, office or workshop to ensure optimum coverage and performance.

Based on the Qualcomm 7225 chipset, this device offers HSUPA upload speeds up to 5.76 Mbps and download speeds up to 7.2 Mbps, as well as AWS support for US markets — making it a front-runner in the market.

New features and ease-of-use raise router performance to new heights and eliminate the barriers to adoption among households and small businesses wishing to share a high speed HSPA connection. The GlobeSurfer III reiterates the role of wireless broadband as a real alternative to DSL.
