How We Decided

We preferred offroad hoverboards with self-balancing design and lithium battery-charged motors with at least 250w of horsepower for consistent acceleration and ease of riding up inclines. We looked for hoverboards with heavy-duty construction consisting of metal, alloy, and high-test plastic parts for maximum durability and load-bearing without adding excessive build weight.

We also liked hoverboards with high-powered, environmentally friendly, efficient battery packs with travel lengths per charge of at least 40 minutes which required no more than 4 hours to charge. We preferred models with maximum weight limits of no less than 220 lbs that maintained consistent performance and speed for both small and large riders.

Finally, we preferred hoverboards with extra-wide, no-slip platforms that could accommodate most riders safely and comfortably while maintaining optimal balance. We also liked models with automatic and programmable safety lights, large, all-terrain tires with large treads and non-pneumatic construction for no-pop safety and a smoother ride, and entertainment features like music app connectivity and built-in Bluetooth speakers.

Best Off Road Electric Scooter Buyer’s Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Large, Rugged Tires
Street-style hoverboards tend to have smaller, smoother wheels, appropriate for getting around on paved roads and streets. While they get the job done for that purpose, they’re generally unsuitable for offroad riding.Off-road hoverboards tend to feature large or oversized solid rubber tires- at least 8.5”- with large treads made to take abuse on all sorts of terrain. Some even feature airless, non-pneumatic tires that are pop-proof and don’t need to be filled or maintained like hollow tires. The latter option is definitely something to watch for if you plan on riding on terrain with a lot of road hazards.
  2. Battery Power
Travel time per charge can vary a lot between models, though about 12 miles for a single charge is average. That number is also affected somewhat by rider size and terrain- a larger rider taking on a lot of hills will experience a shorter travel time per charge than a smaller rider on flat terrain, for example. However, some hoverboard battery packs are capable of travel times per charge of up to 20 miles, and some considerably less than the average of 12 miles. A larger battery charge often means a heavier hoverboard at a higher price point, so keep your needs in mind here and the length of trip you expect to be taking on a regular basis.
  3. Balance
It almost goes without saying that one of the most important, if not the most important qualities in a hoverboard is balance- it can be tricky to get used to standing on a hoverboard so models that are designed with maximum ease of balance in mind are absolutely the best, especially for off-roading, where the terrain will constantly provide things to throw off rider balance, regardless of riding experience.Thankfully, the majority of off-road hoverboards are designed to be “self-balancing”, making learning to ride them and maintaining a smooth, safe ride much easier. Some self-balancing designs will increase price points, but even many budget hoverboards feature such designs.

Off Road Electric Scooter FAQs

Are hoverboards safe?

There are two main issues to address here- when hoverboards first started gaining mass popularity around 2014, there were a number of reported cases of them catching fire due to overheating in their lithium batteries.Thankfully, new regulations passed in 2016 meant that manufacturers had to address this already admittedly small danger and that hoverboards built since then carry little to no danger as fire hazards. The second question, of course, is are they safe to operate in terms of how prone to accidents they are. That depends on the rider somewhat, but generally, hoverboards travel at fairly low speeds and are built with maximum balance in mind- especially offroad models- so in short, yes, they’re generally a fairly safe mode of transport.

How do I maintain a hoverboard?

Hoverboards are electrical devices that use battery power and generally have a mix of metal, rubber, and plastic parts. They also bear weight and often are used on uneven or dusty and dirty terrain. Your first priority should be keeping your hoverboard clean. You can use a soft damp towel to clean most parts of your hoverboard- try to do so every few rides- or every time you use it if you’re traveling off-road on dirt and grass. Apart from that, always keep the battery at a full charge if possible. Leaving it at a partial charge will decrease battery life and efficiency. Lastly, keeping your tires properly inflated if they’re standard hollow pneumatic tires will not only increase the life of your hoverboard but will make for a smoother, safer ride that uses less battery power.

Can I ride a hoverboard in the rain?

Generally speaking, it’s not advisable, as hoverboards have electronics and motors that are often partially exposed and can be damaged severely by water. The same applies to riding through puddles and excessively muddy terrain. However, some models, especially off-road models, are built to be somewhat water-resistant, and will usually note this feature in product descriptions. That said, it shouldn’t be assumed even an off-road hoverboard is waterproof unless it specifically is described as such.

What’s the best off road hoverboard?

The best off road hoverboards feature a heavy-duty frame made from lightweight but highly durable alloys, steel, and high test plastics, a motor with at least 250w of horsepower, large-tread airless tires, and a maximum weight limit of no less than 220lbs.
