The HalloMotor 5000W FC-1 excelled with every electric bike uphill test we threw at it, thanks to the integrated 5000 watt electric motor. If you are wondering how steep a hill can an electric bike climb, the answer to your question will be “just about any hill out there.” In other words, this motor is excellent, with the ability to reach a maximum speed of 55 miles per hour in addition to excelling with steep inclines. We also loved the rear DNM Burner-RCP3 air suspension system, which allows for an ultra-smooth ride, and the high-grade hydraulic disc brakes.

Though the Samsung lithium-ion battery pack can get around 31 miles on a single charge, the charger is fairly slow, taking around six to seven hours to reach a maximum charge. Additionally, this bike features a rear-hub motor, which may not suit consumers looking for mid-drive motors. But this is still the best electric bike for hilly commmutes.

#2  E-Cells Super Monarch Crown Ebike for Hills

E-Cells Super Monarch™ Crown AWD 1500

WHY WE LIKE IT: Twin 750w geared-hub motors create plenty of torque, 170 nm, with a massive 400 pound load capacity and stability-enhancing features like RockShox rear shocks and a Shimano 10-speed transmission system.

The E-Cells Super Monarch Crown includes not one but two custom-built Bafang geared-hub motors, allowing for 1500 watts of power and 170 nm torque. This thing absolutely blows past even the steepest of inclines and, due to the sheer power, can support up to a 400 pound load capacity. We also loved how smooth and stable a ride the E-Cells offered us, thanks to the RockShox rear shocks and the Shimano 10-speed transmission system.

This electric bike also features dual Samsung lithium batteries that can be used simultaneously or desperately, allowing for 50 miles of use on a single charge. The only downside here is that these batteries take a while to charge, at least seven hours. Also, this is an extremely heavy e-bike, coming in at nearly 100 pounds. But it’s one of the best bikes if you’re looking for something with plenty of torque.

The Addmotor Motan features a unique and retro-inspired aesthetic, with a comfortable banana seat and a durable aluminum alloy frame. We loved the powerful LED headlamp on the front of this bike, which makes it great for night riding, and the fat 20 inch tires, which excel across a wide variety of terrain types including sand and wet roads. The lithium battery also gets 65 miles on a single charge, which is a fantastic metric and should make short work out of even the longest commute.

Though the 750 watt motor makes short work out of inclines and hills, it does max out at 23 miles per hour, which is decent but not the fastest electric bike to be found. We also must note that a fair bit of assembly was required to make this bicycle roadworthy. But if you’re looking for something that doesn’t have the hassles of assembly, then the best adult tricycle may be perfect for you.

The Biktrix Juggernaut Classic can traverse the most treacherous and debris-laden terrains, thanks to being equipped with Kenda Havoc 27.5 inch fat tires. These tires also make ascending steep inclines easier, thanks to how much traction they provide over surfaces. We loved the dual-piston hydraulic brakes, allowing for a natural stop even while descending, and the durable 6061 aluminum frame.

Though the custom-made plush saddle is certainly comfortable for certain body types, it is on the narrower side, which may not suit all consumers. Also, this bike is not manufactured for riders under 5’9”, though it can accomodate a 330 pound load capacity. Also, take a look at our best electric hunting bike buying guide list.

The Haibike Sduro Fullseven LT is an extraordinarily safe electric bicycle, despite its raw hill-climbing power, with stable Tektro Orion hydraulic disc brakes and Schwalbe Tough Tom 27.5”x2.35” fat tires. The tires excel at absorbing the vibrations that typically come from riding over rough terrains and the Shimano Deore RapidFire Plus 10-speed shifter makes short work out of climbing up steep inclines.

Though the Yamaha PW-ST system motor is great at both acceleration and traversing steep inclines, it does max out at 20 miles per hour, which may be an issue for some riders. Additionally, this bike required a fair bit of assembly upon receipt, though all necessary tools, including an Allen wrench, were included. You may need to buy the best bike lock just in case you take this bike into town for the occasional leisure ride.

The backlit LCD display is incredibly useful, relaying metrics such as riding distance and top riding speed. We also loved the LG brand lithium-ion battery, which gets 40 miles per charge and can easily be removed or locked underneath the seat post.

Though the Bafang 750 watt brushless rear hub motor is designed for quick acceleration and hill climbing, it does max out at around 20 miles an hour, which may be an issue for some consumers. The Haibike Xduro Allmtn 2.0 is an extremely durable electric bike, with an aluminum frame, forged aluminum cranks and ultra-fat Maxxis Minion tires, which excel on hills and across rough terrains. We loved the Shimano dual hydraulic lever brakes, which we found to be stable and efficient, and the RockShox Deluxe rear shocks. These shocks added to the bike’s durability rating by effortlessly absorbing vibrations caused by bumps and debris.

Though the Yamaha PW-X2 System motor features enough power for climbing steep inclines and for quick acceleration, it does max out at 20 miles per hour. Also, Also, the Schwartz saddle is somewhat rigid, though the seatpost offers multiple adjustment positions. Still, this bike’s hydraulics give good stability just like with the best kids mountain bikes.

We loved the front and rear disc brakes, which allow for smooth and stable stops, and the Shimano 7-speed transmission system, making hill climbing a fuss-free experience.

The 250 watt brushless gear motor is powerful enough for steep inclines but struggles in the speed department, maxing out at just 15 miles per hour. Also, the removable 36V 8AH lithium Ion battery with this folding bike reaches a maximum charge on the quicker side, but does only allow for around 20 miles of use per charge. And then there are also the best ebike for heavy riders, great for those with larger builds.

How We Decided

To help narrow down to the above list of road bikes as we made these reviews, we focused primarily on bicycles with hefty and powerful motors that offer plenty of torque and, thus, climbing ability. The electric bicycles we chose had no problems ascending even the steepest of inclines. We also liked bikes with good suspension systems and high-quality brakes, so as to further assist the climbing and descending process.

These powerful motors typically, though not always, also offer high maximum speeds, which was certainly a metric we took into consideration. Battery life and range were also incredibly important. As such, we preferred high-quality lithium-ion batteries that boasted maximum ranges of at least 20 miles per charge and we liked those that also featured quick-charge capabilities, receiving said maximum charge in just a few hours.

Durable aluminum alloy frames were also appreciated during our reviews, as were comfortable saddles and adjustable seatposts. We loved integrated safety features, such as hydraulic disc brakes and bright LED headlights, as well. Finally, we liked bikes with nifty additional features like large LCD screens, USB ports for the charging of smartphones, and rear racks, for storage.

Best Ebike for Hills Buyer’s Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Motor and Torque
If you are looking to climb up some steep hills, you should look for a bike equipped with a good quality turbo motor that can easily ascend those steep inclines. Be on the lookout for motors made by Bosch Active Line or Bafang, in addition to other reputable companies, and those that offer plenty of torque and climbing power. A good torque sensor helps maintain climbing momentum and a well-made powertrain will ensure your motor is efficiently powered. Maximum turbo speed should be a consideration, but should not weigh too heavily on your decision if you are planning to primarily use the bike for hill climbing.
  2. Battery
You don’t want to get stuck in the middle of ascending a big hill when your battery runs out of juice. To that end, look for bikes that feature high-grade lithium batteries that get at least 20 to 30 miles on a single charge. Also, look for batteries with quick-charge capabilities that can reach a maximum charge in just a few hours. Finally, most batteries can be easily removed for theft deterrence and easy charging.
  3. Safety Features
If you are going to partake in some intense climbing sessions, robust safety features are a must. Look for bikes with hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes that are placed in both the front and the rear, which can help as you descend. You’ll also want to choose a bike with a durable frame, often made from aluminum alloy, and one with a full suspension system. Other safety features include bright LED headlights, horns, assistance modes including pedal assist and the option to add a child seat.
