If you’re on the market for a great camera, one that captures high-quality images and 1080p video, we come to the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II for consideration. It’s a fine digital camera for video, but not a good Canon DSLR camera. Yet, canon isn’t a stranger to making great cameras on a budget. But, is the PowerShot G9 X Mark II the best vlogging camera? Let’s find out.

Why We Like It – Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II

With rapid-fire burst mode, quick-acting RAW shooting, and picture styles to choose from, the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II is a great companion to have for capturing special moments. While this is great, it’s not the best medium-format digital camera to have.

Pros
  • Continuous shooting speed of 8.1fps
  • Shooting RAW format is quick
  • Eight picture style presets to choose from
Cons
  • Fixed touch screen
  • Better options for a vlogging camera

Performance

With a 1-inch sensor size, it isn’t surprising the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II takes great photos. The G9 X Mark II has a 20.1MP CMOS sensor, capable of taking stunning pictures in various styles such as portrait, monochrome, fine details, or automatic. The image quality you get with this image sensor is what we expect from Canon. And with its DIGIC 7 image processor, images are kept sharp even at high ISO settings or low light. Canon did alter the G9 X’s focal length from the commonly-used wide angle of 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8, to 28-84mm, with an aperture of f/2 on the lowest end and a maximum aperture of f/4.9 at the end of its 3x zoom range. When shooting the camera RAW files in particular was surprisingly fast with a shutter speed of just under 1.5 seconds, much better than the original G9 could manage.

Design

What the X Mark II Canon PowerShot G9 does what few compact cameras do, is add some color to their design. An all-black camera can be nice—just look at the Panasonic Lumix LX10—but the silver finish with leather accents is beautiful. The dial and various buttons are easy enough to reach, as is the memory card slot and connecting to Wi-Fi. And it’s very compact in nature; you could put G9X II in your pocket. What we didn’t like was the fixed touch screen. If you’re vlogging, you must see where your camera is facing.

Value

For taking photos, the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II has all-around great value. But as a vlogging camera? Not so much; there are better options, like the Logitech C922X Pro. It’s lacking any meaningful video recording features. For the same price, you could nab a Canon Vixia HF R700 Camcorder. But if you like the Canon G9 X II, perhaps you’ll like the next model up, the Mark II Canon PowerShot G7 X. It carries the same weight as the G9X II, with a better zoom lens.

Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II Wrap Up

Being a camera capable of taking high-quality images is where the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II is most comfortable with—8.1fps burst, shooting RAW is fast, and several picture style presets to fiddle with. Aside from time-lapse and 1080p, the G9 X II has very little to offer for vloggers, not to mention a fixed screen, but it’s still an excellent camera.
