Performance
Featuring the Pixel CMOS AF technology paired with a full range of 45 AF points, the Canon 80D allows you to focus on your subject quicker than ever. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF feature also gives you smooth subject tracking in the Live view mode, so the 80D won’t slow you down while you’re trying to get just the right shot. Similar to the Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS, you get a 24.2-megapixel sensor which paired with the Fine Detail mode allows you to take much better JPEG photos than the older 70D. And, while its auto-white balance isn’t as great, the Canon 80D allows you to have far cleaner photos with much less noise.
However, the Canon 80D doesn’t support 4K like the Panasonic Lumix LX10 and rather comes with a 1080p at 60FPS support. This still makes for shooting video with quality rivaling the Canon PowerShot G7 Mark II. Apart from that, having Servo AI focus, as well as just faster autofocus, the Live view mode is now more useful and refined. But, like every other camera, the Canon 80D isn’t that great at selecting the correct focus point despite its large range. Though, you can still use the 9-point zone focus which gives you much better image quality.
The Canon 80D also comes with a 1/8,000-sec shutter and 1/250-sec flash sync which along with the Fine Detail option allow you to take amazing photos in raw files at up to ISO 1600. You can go to a high ISO of 6400 which will still give pretty good photos but without a lot of dynamic range to recover. This also allows you to get sharp details in your photos like other cameras with the APS-C sensor.
Apart from the 45-point AF system the Canon 80D also offers you a pretty great 7fps video shooting with focus tracking while the metering sensor allows you to change between modes like Partial, Spot, Center-weighted, and Evaluative. Other than that the Canon EOS 80D is pretty fast, focusing on its target in less than 0.1 seconds and a longer 0.8s in dim light.
Moreover, while Wi-fi NFC connectivity is present, the Canon EoS 80D also provides you with a USM lens that you would connect to any other Canon DSLR which provides you with an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS which is used with the Power Zoom Adapter Pz-E1 allows you to use the app to zoom from one focal length to another, surpassing cameras like the Canon Vixia HF R700 Camcorder. You can even connect a headphone or a mic for better audio in your videos.
Furthermore, the Canon EoS 80D comes with a battery life that allows you to take 960 shots with the optical viewfinder and 1390 without the flash on. As for its functionality, you get a touchscreen, which is both very responsive and functional and you also get the option to use Canon’s free app to control the camera remotely.
Design
Just like its cousin the Canon EOS Rebel T6i DSLR, the EOS 80D measures 4.1 by 5.5 by 3.1 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.6 pounds without any extra lens added, it’s most certainly not the lightest camera out there. Its glass pentaprism viewfinder contributes to its weight of it but it does come with its benefits. While it does lack behind with a single SD card slot, unlike the Fujifilm XP140, the built-in Wi-Fi and NFC can now connect to your devices more easily for faster data transfer.
Other than that, with a headphone and mic jack as well as an easy connection to most lenses out there, the Canon EOS 80D is a pretty good-looking and convenient to use DSLR camera. Value
Priced at under $900 without the kit, the Canon EOS isn’t a very affordable DSLR camera, unlike the BestGuarder NV800 7×31. It comes with its own share of features ranging from the very fast AF system with 45 AF points as well as a pretty good amount of video functionality with the smooth and fast autofocus system and subject tracking. However, it does fall behind without being able to record 4K, unlike the Panasonic Lumix LX10. And so unless you absolutely need the 4K recording, the easy-to-use design of the Canon EOS 80D paired with its amazing video quality makes it a great pick, that is if you’re going to make this an investment rather than just something for your off time.
