How We Decided
We looked at both Fujifilm’s full-frame cameras and medium format digital cameras (DSLR) designed for high-performance at price points aimed at casual photographers looking to purchase their first serious digital cameras, to high-performance cameras made for professional still photographers, to cameras made with filmmakers in mind. We favored cameras that were easy and intuitive to use but also included advanced features like optical zoom, and image stabilizing.
We also liked Fuji cameras with removable viewfinders, touchscreen LCD displays, directional tilting, and high or medium rigidity with alloy bodies. We also liked modern features like back-illuminated sensors and ergonomic grips for comfortable, safe handling over long shoots. Finally, we preferred DSLR cameras that created 16-bit images with a minimum of 20 megapixels that had excellent color fidelity, shadow detail, and dynamic range for producing lifelike images even after web compression. Photographers who need continuous shooting- anyone photographing sports or other fast-moving, action-packed scenarios- will want to pay attention to shutter speed for continuous shooting- generally expressed as FPS (not to be confused with video capture FPS). It’s good to look out for cameras capable of reasonable frames per second of shooting. 3 FPS is a good low number to look for in lower price-point cameras, but plenty of Fujifilm cameras purpose-built for action shooting can have shutter speeds of up to 10 FPS.
