There are many great cameras out there. Just searching for the “best Canon digital camera” or the “best digital camera for filmmaking” is sure to display an overwhelming number of results. One good option for entry-level photographers is the Canon EOS Rebel SL3, which boasts excellent battery life, an accurate autofocus system, various shooting modes, and 4K video recording, among other fun features. When it comes to beginner DSLR cameras, the EOS Rebel SL3 DSLR is a fine choice, though it still doesn’t quite hold up to our Best Digital Camera for beginners, the Nikon Z50.

Why We Like It – Canon EOS Rebel SL3

Mirrorless cameras have become the go-to for many professional and amateur photographers alike, but that doesn’t mean those who prefer an optical viewfinder are out of luck. The Canon EOS Rebel SL3 is a DSLR camera that is an excellent machine for entry-level photographers.

Image quality

Image quality is highly dependent on lenses, and plenty of the available Canon EF lenses can produce stunning photos. As far as image quality is concerned, the Canon Rebel SL3 is on par with our pick for the best digital SLR camera. The integrated APS C CMOS sensor can capture high-quality photos that are sure to please. In low light, though, many reviewers found far too much noise in their final photos at any ISO above 1600. Videos don’t fare too well in this category, either. The Canon Rebel SL3 substantially crops videos and doesn’t use the dual pixel CMOS AF available in its still photography. The Nikon Z50, on the other hand, has an autofocus system that focuses on the face and eye detection.

Ease of use

Part of what makes this a contender for the best Canon digital camera comes from how easy it is to learn and use. The camera body is incredibly light and compact and has camera features like built-in Wi-fi and live view mode. The SL3 camera also utilizes a varied-angle LCD screen, making difficult angles and selfies incredibly easy to pull off. The STM kit lens is also rather lovely as it significantly decreases the sound of the autofocus system. The buttons on the Rebel SL3 are laid out intuitively. Still, they are not customizable, and the camera only supports a single UHS-I SD memory card, so more advanced users might want to look elsewhere.

Battery life

The battery life on the EOS Rebel SL3 digital camera is another thing that makes this an excellent camera for beginners. This digital camera can take up to 1600 pictures on a single battery charge when using the optical viewfinder, while it can take up to 350 through live view. Because of this, the EOS Rebel SL3 is a great entry-level camera for traveling, gatherings, and aspiring social media stars.

Durability

The camera body on this Canon EOS is small and compact: it’s the lightest and most miniature DSLR camera on the market. The plastic body is relatively solid, but it’s not weather-sealed, so users should be careful not to expose the camera to the elements whenever possible. The glass on the vari-angle touchscreen is not reinforced: it looks and handles similar to a newer smartphone and should probably be treated as such.

Value

Someone looking for a great beginner camera at a great price should consider the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 or its mirrorless counterpart, the EOS M50. Anyone with the money to splurge might be interested in the similar Canon EOS 90D, as it has many of the same great features as this digital camera but with a larger sensor. The image quality and plethora of helpful camera features make the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 great, especially for entry-level photographers.

Canon EOS Rebel SL3 Wrap Up

The Canon EOS Rebel SL3 is not necessarily the best buy one can make if they have specific needs in mind, but amateur photographers will be more than happy with what this little digital camera can do. Videographers, on the other hand, should consider different options like the Canon EOS 90D. The super-long battery life, helpful autofocus, intuitive button layout, and vari-angle LCD touch screen all make this a fantastic learning camera for still photography.
