There are a lot of options in the Canon EOS catalog, including the Canon PowerShot ELPH 190, Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS, Canon PowerShot G7 X, and the Canon PowerShot G16. Whether you prefer shooting on a mirrorless camera or a digital SLR with an optical viewfinder doesn’t negate the universal want to capture high-quality images. Otherwise, Hasselblad digital cameras wouldn’t be so well-liked.

The Canon EOS 90D isn’t the Best Digital Camera for beginners, the best digital SLR camera, or even the best Canon digital camera. Still, it does deliver great photo and video capture, thanks to a wide variety of features.

Why We Like It – Canon EOS 90D

The Canon EOS 90D is a nice lower-cost option for burgeoning photographers that want excellent image quality and handling without breaking the bank. The dual-pixel CMOS AF with 45 AF Points keeps photos in focus, and the 32.5 MP APS C Sensor delivers high-quality, high-resolution images in various settings. This is way better than the FujiFilm X-T4, which only has a 26.1 MP APS-C sensor.

  • Only one memory card slot means there is no camera backup
  • Not a lot of high-resolution lenses available without buying the third party

Image quality

Even though the APS C CMOS sensor on the Canon EOS 90D is smaller than a full-frame one, it still manages to capture consistently sharp images in the proper lighting. In low light, though, it struggles to take good pictures at high ISO: even though the camera can go up to 25,600, anything taken after 6400 tends to show a lot of noise and grain. The cross-type AF system and face detection feature help ensure fast and accurate focus. The super-fast electronic shutter means this camera is excellent at capturing high-speed motion. If you need a camera that will still produce the best shot even under low light, consider the Nikon D5600 Digital SLR Camera.

Ease of use

Given the features of the Canon EOS 90D, it should come as no surprise that this is one of those digital cameras that bridges the gap between enthusiasts and professionals. The live view on the LCD touchscreen is one of the best available for a camera of this caliber, which is reinforced by the screen’s vari-angle capability. The camera body is lightweight and ergonomic without sacrificing sturdiness, and the added thumbstick control makes navigating menus quickly and accurately much easier than the D-pad on other models.

Battery life

The battery life on the EOS 90D is pretty great at 1300 shots per charge, coming in just under our pick for the best digital SLR camera. Via the live view mode, this camera can deliver about 450 captures on a single charge. This matches and even exceeds the battery life of some high-end cameras, like the Nikon Z50 or any Hasselblad digital camera. Especially when compared to its mirrorless counterpart, the M6 Mark II, the Canon EOS 90D is much better for battery life.

Durability

The Canon EOS 90D is exceedingly capable for various shooting locations because of its magnesium alloy body with weather sealing. Rain or shine, this camera is built to last. The EOS 90D is relatively easy to hold for extended periods thanks to its smaller size and textured ergonomic grip. Please don’t be mistaken, though: this camera has considerable enough heft to make it feel satisfying. More than anything, this camera feels familiar to anyone with experience using a DSLR camera. Even compared to smaller mirrorless cameras, the EOS 90D is easy to hold in a single hand.

Value

This camera has a lot to offer for a relatively small price, making it an excellent value for enthusiasts that might want to try out something closer to a pro-level DSLR camera. There’s plenty more for this camera than against it, like fast shutter speed and multi-point AF, making it a superb choice. The uncropped 4K video is an excellent step up from the more modestly-priced Canon EOS Rebel SL3. It should be noted that several more expensive mirrorless cameras also don’t have this functionality, so videographers should be happy. However, if you want the best image quality or the most effortless handling, several options might give you more bang for your buck.

Canon EOS 90D Wrap Up.

When searching for the best camera, it’s important to remember exactly what you need your camera to do. The Canon EOS 90D has a lot going for it, such as the LCD touch screen, 10fps continuous shooting, and WiFi/Bluetooth capability, but that doesn’t come without sacrificing features like a second memory card slot or fully-realized high ISO.
