If you’re looking to get a GPS Tracker from a reputable, well known brand, then the SmartThings Tracker from Samsung should do you just fine. The tracker is part of Samsung’s wide array of IoT devices they call SmartThings, and if you’re already using some of them in your house, then you’ll also be able to integrate the tracker into your home automation setup. With a battery life that lasts up to 10 days on power saving mode and 4-5 days with typical usage, the tracker outlasts a lot of the options that you’ll find in the market, making it a great value buy. By the end of this review, you’ll have found out what it can do, as well as whether it’s the best GPS tracker for you.

Why We Like It – Samsung SmartThings Tracker Live Review

The Samsung SmartThings SM V110AZWAATT tracker lets you track anything that you’re likely to lose easily. It’s great for live tracking your pets, elderly relatives or kids when they go to school, and with the geofences that it allows you to set up, you’ll always be informed when they leave or arrive at a designated area.

Pros
  • Waterproof (IP68 rating) & dustproof
  • 1 Year free use
  • Decent battery life
Cons
  • Problematic with the SmartThings Classic app

Performance

The Samsung SmartThings tracker relies on a cellular LTE based network and a GPS signal to keep tabs on your pet or person, making it a lot more efficient than trackers that rely on Bluetooth. This also makes the tracker very accurate in location tracking, and allows you to monitor the movements of your pet or loved one in real time. Using the SmartThings app is also a breeze, as the app allows you to create zones where you’ll get a notification once the tracker moves in or out. You can only set up two of these zones, and each can have a minimum radius of up to 700 feet. Location updates can be sent every 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, and every 5 hours, which is far more frequent than you can get with the LandAirSea 54 GPS Tracker, but if your kid presses the power button two times, they’ll be able to send their real time location over to the app. If you’re interested in a tracking app that can monitor text messages, then read our iKeyMonitor review.

Design

The SmartThings tracker comes in a small, plastic frame that measures about 1.7 by 1.7 by 0.5 inches, and weighs less than an ounce. It’s actually similar to the Tracki 2020 GPS tracker in terms of size, and is also water resistant and dust proof, making it capable of handling a little bit of rough weather. It’s IP68 rating means that it can stay under water at a depth of 5 feet, for a period not exceeding 30 minutes. You won’t get as many colour options with the Samsung tracker as it is only available in white, though it does come with a short strap that you can use to attach it to a backpack or a purse.

Value

The most impressive thing about the Samsung SmartThings tracker is that you’ll get free cellular service for the first year. This is a plan that you probably won’t get with any other tracker (the PrimeTracking Personal GPS Tracker included), and it means that you only need to purchase the it, download the SmartThings classic app, and you’ll be ready to keep track of whoever you’ll give it to. After the one year lapses, you’ll then start paying either $5 per month, or $50 per year for the cell service. Also, if you already have a smart home setup and you use SmartThings devices in your home, integrating the new SmartThings tracker into that mix will allow you to set up what Samsung calls presence-based automations.

Samsung SmartThings Tracker Live Review Wrap Up

The Samsung SmartThings tracker is a tracker that you can get from either best buy or Amazon at a great price. What you want to make sure of is that you’re using the new SmartThings app instead of the old Classic app. This way, you’ll avoid all the integration issues that have been reported by previous customers.
