Whether you are looking for a desk as a holiday gift, or are expecting a new computer and want a new desk to put it on, chances are good you’ll look at a few standing desks in the coming months – and then back away rapidly from the price tags. But Scott Rumschlag has a workaround: A DIY standing desk that you can build yourself without sinking a thousand dollars into it.

However, if you want to buy the real deal, our standup desk reviews can help.

Standing desks are growing in popularity as more scientific warnings appear, telling us how dangerous sitting is for our whole bodies. Some of these desks move via cranks, some have electronic adjustable lifts, some are frozen in place, and all of them get you on your feet. But if you are crafty enough, Rumschlag’s plans allow you to build your own standing desk, with a genius convertible feature that uses counterweights to move the desk up and down.

Rumschlag’s display desk is made of hickory and looks smooth as butter. It functions via two wooden boxes on the back of the desk that are filled with nails and sand, counterweights that allow for easy positioning of the desk surface.

Perhaps best of all, you can download the plans for this desk for a nominal fee, bringing the cost down to the materials that you use. You don’t need to pick hickory, but a versatile and strong wood is advised for this project, along with a selection of high-quality mechanical parts.

You will also need some carpentry chops to tackle this project. Work with your level and sander will be of utmost importance to achieve smooth counterweight action. This is one project with a single crooked screw can cause a whole lot of problems.

If you think you are up for the challenge and want to save money at the same time, visit the website and download the plans for yourself. It costs a single payment of $29 for the download, and you get to see a demo to help make up your mind.
