Performance

When operating at 2.4GHz, the AC1750 MU MIMO Wi Fi Router will cap at 450Mbps. That’s really good, but each band allows multiple devices to connect. For every device connected, it will effectively cut the speed in half.

On the bright side, the 5GHz band can cap at 1,300Mbps. Altogether, that puts the D-Link DIR-867 at a maximum of 1750Mbps. For someone who wants to stream 4K media, using the 5GHz access point is perfect, while the 2.4GHz access point is more than enough for online gaming. However, the collective speed is lower than the Netgear Orbi RBK23’s 2.2Gbps speeds. It’s $120 more, but you get three wireless routers and the speeds are better allocated.

Design

As far as design is concerned, the D-Link DIR-867 is rather simple in nature. There’s four antennas—that can’t be removed—and it’s relatively small. It doesn’t need a lot of real estate, unlike the TP-Link Deco Whole Home Mesh, which uses three separate devices.

One negative aspect of the D-Link DIR-867 is the lack of USB ports. There are none. Not one. However, four gigabit LAN ports are located in the back, including one gigabit WAN port. That’s a standard number of Ethernet ports.

Value

The D-Link Wi Fi Router is in a very niche place. On one hand, its speeds are capable of handling multiple devices at one, even smart home devices, providing reasonable speeds to each. On the other hand, it isn’t so powerful that its performance is wasted on one person. Too many WiFi routers are capable of incredible speeds, but much of it is lost if multiple people aren’t taking advantage of it.

The D-Link DIR-867’s value can definitely be felt in the individual. It doesn’t have a ton of features that get wasted when used on a personal level, and even come with malware protection at the start, unlike the Eero Pro Mesh Wi-Fi System (2nd Gen). But when friends are over for game night and binge watching, it can handle an influx of devices.

D-Link DIR-867 Wrap Up

The D-Link DIR-867 works wonderfully for streaming 4K and gaming online—especially if you’re on a budget, and want to replace your rented router. Its performance is strong enough to handle an influx of devices when, but more importantly, it isn’t too powerful that resources are wasted on a single person. It’s versatile that way. You can overlook its lack of USB ports.
