The Yamaha Wabash Electric Gravel Bike is likely the best electric mountain bike you can buy, thanks to a number of unique functionalities that combine to make this model an absolute beast on a variety of terrain types. We loved the custom-built center-mounted motor, which offers a low center of gravity, and the inclusion of ultra-safe SRAM Apex hydraulic disc brakes. The Maxxis Speed Terrane tires are also of great benefit, as they offer a fantastic mix of flat-out speed and traction.

Though the 500-watt motor is extremely powerful and suitable for both gravelly paths and steep inclines, it only engages via pedal assist, as there is no twist throttle here. For your kids, the best kids mountain bikes may perform well too, especially on the steep inclines. We found the sensors on the pedal on this gravel e-bike, however, to be incredibly accurate.

The Giant Crosscut Gravel 2 tubeless tires are incredibly resilient and puncture-resistant, so they are sure to not only excel on gravity but across all rough terrain types. We also loved the Shimano GRX hydraulic disc brakes, which we found to deliver smooth stopping power even during wet conditions.

Though the EnergyPak lithium battery is not removable, which is something of a nuisance, it does reach a maximum charge in just 90 minutes, which is an absolutely fantastic metric. That makes it one of the best electric bikes around. And even though the saddle is on the rigid side, it did soften up a bit with multiple rides.

The Boardman ADV 8.9E includes a 250wh battery that gets 60 miles on a single charge, which is a decent enough metric, but it also comes with a quick charger that arrives at a full charge in under three hours. We loved the integrated sensors that account for torque, speed, and cadence when determining pedal assist and the integrated app, which boasts a speedometer, GPS, and a whole lot more.

Though the Fazua Evation 250w motor is great for accelerating and for climbing steep inclines, it does max out at 15.5 miles per hour, which could be an issue for some. Also, the 50mm tires that accompany this ebike are made for riding over gravel, which is great, though they can struggle slightly on asphalt. This is a high-end electric bicycle and, as such, does not include pedals, allowing riders to choose their own to suit their personal needs. Additionally, this bike is on the heavier side, coming in at nearly 50 pounds. The best bike lock should be on your mind too, for the safety of your bike.

We loved the folding design, which allows users to easily fold the bike up into a compact shape for storage and transport when not in use. The durable 6061 aluminum frame was much appreciated, as was the 8-speed Shimano transmission system, the latter making this bike excel on gravel and other difficult terrain types.

Though the battery can easily be removed, for charging on-the-go, it does only get around 25 miles of use per single charge, despite the motor achieving a max speed of 28 MPH. Also, the headlight is exceptionally luminous, though the rear light is on the dimmer side. For those who enjoy the outdoors read our buying guide on the best off road electric bikes.

We loved the 750-watt turbo motor, which can reach speeds up to 27 miles per hour, and the stability-enhancing Shimano 7-speed transmission system. The dual disc brakes on this gravel e-bike are also of exceptional quality and performed admirably during all of our testing sessions.

This bike arrives semi-assembled but does require an hour or two of work in order to make it roadworthy. Additionally, the battery maxes out at 25 miles per charge, and this metric decreases considerably as you approach the 330-pound load capacity. But, this bike gives stability similar to what you get with the best adult tricycle, which is something you want – especially while riding in the mountains.

We loved the 750w Bafang motor and Mozo suspension fork, both of which offer a smooth ride over gravel and other difficult terrain types, in addition to making this bike excel with climbing steep inclines. The Tektro disc brakes are safe and efficient and the durable aluminum frame is aesthetically pleasing.

This is a step-thru design, however, and it isn’t built to accommodate taller-than-average riders. In other words, it can only comfortably fit a rider up to around 6’2”. Additionally, it requires a fair amount of assembly upon receipt, though instructions are included. For the more casual riders, also consider some of the best electric beach cruiser bikes.

The Rainbod Mountain Gravel E Bike comes in at a budget-friendly price while offering many features included with higher-priced competitors, such as a 21-speed transmission system that does a great job on gravel, dirt, sand, and other treacherous terrain types. We loved the foldable design, making it easy to store and transport this bike, and the durable aluminum alloy frame and carbon steel fork.

Though the integrated LED headlamp is luminous and perfect for night riding, this bike does not include a taillight, though one can be purchased separately and attached. Also, the lithium battery pack gets under 20 miles per charge, though it can reach a full charge in around four hours. And then there are also the best ebike for heavy riders, great for those with larger builds.

How We Decided

To help narrow down to the above list, we made sure that each and every bike we tested excelled on gravelly terrains. To that end, we were attracted to electric bicycles with larger-than-average tires and robust suspension systems, in addition to powerful motors that could easily deal with difficult terrain types.

The battery was also important, so we took great care to only choose bikes equipped with state-of-the-art lithium batteries that could run at least 25 miles on a single charge, with many performing at twice that capacity. We also liked batteries that reached a maximum charge quickly, in just a few hours, and those that could easily be removed for the purposes of remote charging and theft deterrence.

Of course, safety was a paramount concern as we went about testing the above ebikes. We liked bicycles made from durable aluminum alloy or 6061 aluminum frames and those that featured hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes that had no problems stopping on gravel or during rainstorms. Finally, we liked bikes with additional features, such as useful LCD displays, LED headlights, and racks for storage.

Best Gravel E Bike Buyer’s Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Motor
A powerful motor and battery can work wonders while traveling over gravel and other difficult terrain types. Look for high-quality motors built by reputable companies like Bafang, Bosch, and Yamaha. Side benefits of choosing a great motor include high maximum speeds and excellent climbing ability. Motors of around 500w and above are also quick accelerators, which can come in handy while commuting or doing errands around town. Make sure the drive unit is of exceptional quality as well and that it allows for a turbo boost.
  2. Battery
As with all road bikes and electric gravel bikes, the integrated battery is extremely important. Make sure the bike you choose features a lithium-ion battery pack that can get at least 25 miles of use out of a single charge. Some can get twice that, or even more, so be on the lookout. Also, make sure the batteries can reach a maximum charge quickly, in around three or four hours, and that it can be easily removed for the purposes of charging on-the-go. A 500wh battery should typically suffice.
  3. Safety Features
Safety is paramount while traversing perilous terrain at high speeds on electric gravel bikes. Look for bikes equipped with high-grade mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes, typically manufactured by companies like Tektro and located in the front and rear of the bike, and suspension systems that will successfully absorb bumps in the road and debris on the path. Other safety features include luminous LED headlights, built-in horns, and sturdy carbon frames, or aluminum alloy frames.
