How We Decided

To help narrow down to the above list, we tested models for freezing capabilities, choosing products that descended to freezing temperatures in an hour or so, with adjustable thermostats, for making changes on the fly. We also made sure to include a range of storage size options, some small, in the 1-3 cubic feet range, and some extremely large, five and seven cubic feet. We even tested some of the best chest freezers on the market to add variety to our list.

We also wanted to make sure that these freezers wouldn’t rapidly increase your electricity bill, favoring products with Energy Star certification. Additionally, we liked freezers with a range of options on the interior, such as temperature alarms, wire shelves, removable shelving and baskets, so you can stack foodstuffs using your preferred method.

Finally, we made sure each and every product on the above list offered a warranty of at least one year, with some ascending to two years or more. As far as accessories go, some of the above products come with durable locks, making them perfect for outdoor use.

Another popular brand that just missed our list was Best Buy. Best buy produces fantastic ENERGY STAR certified chest freezers boasting a variety of useful features from power-on indicator lights, temperature alarms, adjustable leveling legs, and quick freeze capabilities. There’s also the Frigidaire brand, and more specifically the Frigidaire FFFU17F2QW upright freezer with interior light, two adjustable leveling legs, wire shelves, adjustable temperature control, and a temperature range of -10 to 10°F. The Frigidaire has a white exterior, a capacity of 17.4 Cu Ft, and taking up a 12 square feet floor space. And in case of a power outage, this Frigidaire model can keep frozen food good for two days. Whirlpool is another good brand too. The Whirlpool WZC3122DW chest freezer scores 4.5 stars on Lowe’s and is a huge unit that can store frozen food for the long term. This Whirlpool model has a storage space of 22 Cu ft.

Upright Freezer Buying Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Cooling Range
Typically, a freezer that operates at 0 degrees fahrenheit will be adequate for most applications. The above list is populated with products that handily descend zero degrees, however, with many going to -10 F and beyond like the Frigidaire FFFU17F2QW. Additionally, look for products that feature adjustment knobs, so you can change settings on the fly.
  2. Storage Size
An upright freezer’s storage capacity is extremely subjective, as there is a trade off one must consider. Sure, bigger may be better in some respects, as you will get to store more foodstuffs, but the bigger the freezer, the heavier and bulkier the unit. You’ll have to figure out the best ratio for your lifestyle. For our tests, we were more than happy with something in the three cubic foot range, though we highlighted many products with more storage.
  3. Three crispers are convenient
Large kitchen appliances, such as refrigerators, are notorious resource hogs, often ratcheting up electricity bills. That is why you may want to make sure any upright freezer you purchase is Energy Star compliant, meaning it has been manufactured to use as little electricity as possible, thus keeping your energy bill in the normal range. Most of the above products feature compressors that are Energy Star compliant. Upright freezers can cost as much as $125 per year to run, but we have products on our list that cost as little as $28 per year to run, with most hovering somewhere in the middle.

Upright Freezer FAQs

What is the average life of an upright freezer?

Current data estimates that an upright freezer should last you, on average, around 16 years. As with other appliances and machines in general, the older a refrigerator or freezer gets, the more costly the repairs it requires to maintain good performance. Keeping refrigerators and freezers clean and well-maintained can help extend good performance and lifespan.

Can a freezer be overloaded?

You bet. Overfilling the freezer can block air vents, restrict the flow of cold air, and overtax your refrigerator’s condenser, which could lead to a burn out. To be on the safe side, make sure your vents aren’t being blocked by large food items.

How long will a freezer work without power?

Upon losing power, a freezer will keep your food items frozen for around 48 hours, as long as you don’t open it. On the other hand, a refrigerator will only keep food cold for around four hours once power goes out.

What should I do during a power outage?

Keep the freezer doors closed as much as possible. This will help maintain the cold temperature. A full freezer will keep the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed. If your freezer has a built-in thermostat, check the temperature when the power comes back on. The food is safe to eat and can be refrozen only if the freezer thermometer reads 40° F or below.

What does frost free mean?

Ice can build up against the door shelve, limiting the space available for frozen food storage. “Frost free” refers to units such as fridges and freezers that prevent the build-up of ice. This is made possible through technology that makes the unit automatically defrost itself after a set amount of time, which also saves you the hassle of having to do a manual defrost every year.

What is freezer burn and how can you prevent it?

Freezer burn is what happens when moisture evaporates from your food, making it dry out. To prevent this, make sure you set the temperature of your food well below 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
