Performance
The Onkyo HT-S5800 brought its A game during review. Its frequency response falls between 80-100kHz, which is right in line for a great pair of surround sound speakers. Of course, its sound quality is heightened by the Dolby Atmos sound quality. As for Bluetooth audio streaming, there was never an issue; in fact, music audio could be slightly better, but EQ settings are available to mask any shortcomings. Height channels were particularly good, creating a much better sound field than the JBL Bar 5.1 ever could.
One thing to note, the receiver would run hot occasionally when on for long periods of time. You can avoid this issue most of the time by dropping the volume down a few notches and avoid placing it in compact spaces.
Design
If we had to describe the Onkyo HT-S5800 in one word, it would be: traditional. The overall design runs close to what a traditional home theater system looks. It doesn’t have an incredibly long soundbar—it’s actually rather small. Even the receiver is out in the open rather than integrated into the soundbar or speakers. We also noticed the rather high-quality materials used on this system. Its best features, however, were all the lovely ports in the back. Out of all the home theater systems on our list, the Onkyo HT-S5800 is rocking the most comprehensive connections, and with cutouts to separate the different devices. It’s a feature we wished the Nakamichi Shockwafe Elite Home Theater System had to justify its price.
Value
With so many home theater speaker systems reviewed, one of the biggest issues has always been priced. Either home theater systems are overpriced, and few are where they should be. We’re happy to point out that the Onkyo HT-S5800 is right where it should be. Its performance, overall high-quality design and features put it firmly at $700. Is it the most comprehensive? That crown belongs to the Logitech Z906 5.1—but the Onkyo HT S5800 provides one of the best entry-level options for those ready for a home theater system.

Aside from the receiver heating up, which can be avoided by dropping the volume a bit, the Onkyo HT-S5800 was a wonderful experience. With 115W dedicated to each channel, we were hoping so. And with so many ports, it was a breeze switching between TV, Blu-Ray, or even video games. This home theater system will serve you well.
