Why We Like It – Nest Learning Thermostat Review

The third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat comes chock-full of features crammed into its small dimensions, more so than many of its competitors, and is the pinnacle of what smart thermostats can offer.

Pros
  • Helps save on heating and cooling cost
  • Easy to install
  • Compatible with Amazon Alexa
Cons
  • Doesn’t include smart room sensors
  • A bit pricey

Performance

The Nest Learning Thermostat makes use of its namesake by being a programmable thermostat. Sure, you can adjust it anytime you want with the Nest app, but the smart home device can program itself over time. When it did find that sweet spot, it had no problem hitting the target temperature, nor did it have any issues reading the current temperature.

Additionally, the Nest Learning Thermostat comes with a Home Away mode. When no one’s home, it’ll turn itself down, further decreasing energy usage. To do this, it uses a proximity sensor and motion sensors.

Lastly, the Nest Learning Thermostat can be controlled by other smart home devices. For example, voice commands with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. However, the Ecobee4 has far more compatible assistants, with the Emerson Sensi Touch standing firm in the middle.

Design

The third generation Nest Thermostat adopts the traditional circular design seen in older thermostats. You even adjust the settings and navigate the menu by twisting an outer ring. However, this isn’t your grandpa’s thermostat with needles and mercury; this one makes use of a digital display and stainless steel finish—unlike the Honeywell Home Wi-Fi, but less modern looking than other Nest products, like the Nest Thermostat E.

Value

At first glance, the Nest Learning Thermostat has a relatively steep price; $221 is a lot on a single thermostat. Since its performance can save reportedly 10 to 12% on heating and 15% on cooling costs, it’s worth the price. Over time you’ll earn that money back, and then some. With the money you save, you can invest in temperature sensors. And let’s not forget all the features that come with it. You’re getting a really good value out of the Nest Learning Thermostat.

Nest Learning Thermostat Review Wrap Up

While the Nest Learning Thermostat is a bit expensive, everything it is makes up for it. It’s easy to install, putting you on the fast-track to saving on heating cooling costs. However, lacking smart room sensors means you’d have to purchase them separately. On the bright side, it works with more than just Google Home. Its features are worth the price alone.
