The Epson Home Cinema 5050UB offers quality performance and fantastic recreation of HDR content, making it the eighth-best projector for sports on the market. Beautiful 4K images are displayed with impressive brightness even from full HD source content with resolution enhancement technology, and the auto iris produces vibrant colors and deep blacks.

Why We Like It – Epson Home Cinema 5050UB

The Epson Home Cinema 5050UB is a powerful home theater projector that outperforms most DLP projectors. Its incredible propensity to reproduce HDR content in stunning 4K resolution makes this UHD projector an excellent buy for anyone looking to enhance their viewing experience into glorious 4K.

Pros
  • High brightness
  • High contrast ratio
  • Excellent HDR reproduction
Cons
  • No built-in speaker

Performance/Resolution

The Epson Home Cinema 5050UB delivers incredible picture quality through its pixel-shifting technology. The 3LCD technology ensures an excellent color gamut even with high brightness to produce a vivid color space. HDR content is reproduced beautifully with 10-bit color processing and Epson’s Ultra Black technology, faithfully displaying all of the source content in 4K resolution. Very few projectors, such as the ViewSonic PX747 can compete with the HDR compatibility of this projector. For a projector that does not need complete darkness to see what’s being projected, the Epson VS250 is a perfect choice.

Brightness/Lumens

The light output of the Epson 5050UB is impressive, offering 2,600 lumens color brightness and white brightness to faithfully display quality images even in well-lit environments. Thanks to the auto iris feature providing a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, colors are vibrant and blacks are dynamic and deep even in the presence of ambient light. In a dark room or during daylight hours, the Epson 5050UB displays only the highest quality images. For greater brightness, the Acer H7850 offers 3,000 ANSI lumens in 4K resolution.

Adjustability/Viewing Angle

The Epson Home Cinema 5050UB comes with several adjustability features to make installation as easy as possible. Focus and zoom features allow for optimal image quality, while the projector also sports both horizontal and vertical lens shifts. Keystone correction technology allows for flexible placement options, and all settings can be stored in one of ten lens memory presets for easy switching between settings. The projector also offers various viewing modes such as bright cinema mode and digital cinema mode.

Durability

The Epson 5050UB sports a large, sturdy case with dimensions of 17.7×20.4×7.5”, offering a variety of connection options such as HDMI and USB type A. The bulb is fairly durable, boasting a maximum lamp life of 5,000 hours, with a minimum of about 3,500 hours, depending on the frequency of use and the different modes. As with most of Epson’s home theater projectors, the 5050UB comes with a warranty of 90 days on the bulb and 2 years on the rest of the machine. You’ll want to look for warranties on most of these machines, especially for the Epson Home Cinema 5040UB, as it’s known for its faulty power supply design.

Value

While not cheap, like the Epson Home Cinema LS100, the Epson Home Cinema 5050UB has a lot to offer and delivers the level of performance one would expect from its price tag. Able to display even 1080p content in beautiful 4K resolution, coupled with exceptional HDR content support, makes this an excellent projector for sports fans and casual viewers alike. Overall, the 5050UB is a great value. If you’re looking for a cheaper option, the Optoma EH415ST also displays great HDR video at 1080p for considerably less money.

Epson Home Cinema 5050UB Wrap Up

Though purchasers of this product will require an external speaker, the Epson Home Cinema 5050UB performs admirably in the presence of ambient light and displays quality 4K pictures from HDR and 1080p content. For the most dedicated sports fans, this projector will make you feel like you’re really there, all from the comfort of your own home.
