Performance & Resolution
Like the Dr. J Professional HI-04 1080p, the Dr. J Professional outdoor movie projector provides an excellent viewing experience for the price. With this mini projector, outdoor movie projections can be viewed up to resolutions of 1920 x1080, in both 4:3 & 16:9 aspect ratios, and at a contrast ratio of 3800:1 (if you want a 4K video projector, check out the BenQ TK850 Projector!). You can project on screens from 32” to 176” using this projector. Dr. J claims that the lamp has a 40,000 hour lifetime, so you won’t need to worry about it burning out anytime soon! Although, the Crosstour mini projector and the Elephas mini portable projector boast 50,000 lamp life before needing replacement.
Brightness & Lumens
Throughout the 40,000-hour lamp life (which, at 5 hours a day, would last for over 21 years!), you will get a bright display at 2,000 lumens. This will provide a good viewing experience in moderate light, but the projection will look even better in a darker room, just like the Anker Nebula Mars II. The Dr. J mini projector will work in lighter settings, but be aware that the brighter the room, the fainter the image will appear. If you want the clearest image with the most contrast possible, we recommend using the projector at night or in a dark room.
Adjustability & Viewing Angle
You have a couple of different options on this projector, especially if you’re setting it up as a home theater projector. The bottom of the device has an adjustable tilt knob which you can screw in/out to change the angle of the projector. Tilting the projector will skew the image, but this is easily fixable with the ±15° keystone slide on the top of the device. The projected image (32”-176”) can then be focused using the focus knob on the projector (check out the BenQ HT2050A 1080p DLP projector if you want a video projector capable of projecting up to 300 inches!).
Durability
Despite being fairly cheap, the Dr. J mini projector is fairly well made. It is encased in an off-white plastic which keeps it decently protected from normal everyday use (the included remote also is encased in plastic, and has rubber buttons). Unfortunately, the HI-04 doesn’t come with a lens cap; the only protection the lens has is a thin black plastic housing that surrounds the lens but doesn’t cover it. If you plan on keeping this for a while, we would probably recommend picking up a lens cap for this device.
Value
At only $129.99 this mini projector is a very good deal (a slightly cheaper alternative is the TMY V08 720P Native Projector). For the price, you get a 1080p projector with a built-in speaker (although you will definitely want to invest in a good set of speakers anyway), a remote, and a 100-inch projection screen. Sadly, it doesn’t appear to include an HDMI adapter (for Apple to HDMI viewing) or a warranty, but the product did score a 4.5 out of 5-stars based on 22,336 Amazon reviews, so it does appear to be fairly reputable.
