The Husqvarna Automower 115H is an entry-level robot lawnmower that works best for smaller lawns, up to 0.5 acres in size. It features a cutting width of 8.66 inches and a max cutting height of 3.6 inches, which is impressive for such a compact mower. It can also handle slopes of up to 17 degrees, so if your lawn has some hills, you won’t need to worry about this mower struggling. The mower can also run in the rain, which is a huge plus.

One of the best things about the Husqvarna is the fact that any purchase includes professional installation. This is an excellent addition to your purchase, which is well worth the cost of the mower. We recommend pursuing the professional installation as it will save you time and effort. The 115H includes a solid smartphone app that allows you to control the lawnmower or create new schedules. Unfortunately, you can only use the app within Bluetooth range, so you won’t be able to make any changes when you’re out of the house. The best part is that this mower is the most affordable option on our list, so if you’re on a budget, you can’t go wrong here. The Worx WR140 Landroid M is a powerful and efficient robot lawn mower with large 8” wheels and accurate navigation around your lawn. The Landroid does extremely well at detecting obstacles, making it a wonderful option for lawns with narrow passages or lots of trees and flower beds. When it comes to obstacles, the Worx WR140 will gently bump into them and then back away. If you want advanced anti-collision technology – which enables the mower to sense obstacles without bumping into them – you’ll need to pay extra for it.

We were most impressed with Worx’s programmability and smartphone app. It’s incredibly easy to create schedules and define work zones around your yard. You can also use the app to configure additional settings like rain delays and Wi-Fi settings. We were impressed to find GPS and Wi-Fi functionality on the WR140 as well, meaning you’ll be able to control the mower when you’re away from the house. Compare this mower to our guide to the best electric lawnmower if you’re still not sure what is best.

The Husqvarna Automower 315X lawn mower is a high-end option that cuts lawns with efficiency and intelligence. It’s best for yards up to 0.4 acres and can even handle slopes up to 22 degrees and grass up to 2.4 inches long. And while the 315X doesn’t include any rain sensors, it can still mow your lawn if it’s wet or while it’s raining without a problem.

We were most impressed with 315X’s anti-theft functionality. Where many mowers only require a PIN to be entered if the unit is picked up, the Husqvarna takes security a few steps farther. On top of the PIN requirement, this mower will also alarm if picked up and it even includes GPS tracking functionality in case it’s ever removed from your lawn. We were also pleased with Husqvarna’s smartphone app. It’s one of the best we’ve tested and it works incredibly well. It allows you to control the mower whether you’re at home or away and gives you the option of changing schedules and other programming options at the touch of your fingers. This will be the best lawnmower to use to trim your lawn and garden.

  • Blades may need to be replaced regularly
  • Complicated and time-consuming installation

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Robomow RS630 is one of the most high-quality robot lawn mowers you can buy today, with advanced functionality that blows the competition out of the water. For starters, the RS630 comes out of the gate with a 22-inch cutting width and the ability to cut on slopes up to 20 degrees. It can easily handle yards up to ¾ acres in a short amount of time. The RS630 also charges quickly (within 90 minutes) so you don’t have to wait forever for it to continue cutting your lawn. Unfortunately, the mower will only run for 80-100 minutes before needing to charge again.

The overall design of the mower is durable, as well. While it doesn’t perform well in the rain, the mower itself is almost completely weatherproof, so you won’t have to worry about it getting ruined if it gets a little wet. Installation is fairly uncomplicated, but it can take a long time to get it right. The Robomow also includes a handy mobile app that works well with the Alexa smart home ecosystem for an even more seamless experience through voice commands.  #5  Gardena 4069 R80Li Robot Lawn Mower

Award: BEST LOW MAINTENANCE

WHY WE LIKE IT: If you need a robot lawnmower that requires minimal maintenance, look no farther than this option. With a worry-free battery and completely weatherproof design, you can essentially set and forget the mower with ease.

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Gardena 4069 R80Li robot lawn mower is one of the most worry and frustration-free mowers you can buy because it requires minimal maintenance and attention. For starters, the lithium-ion battery simply needs to be charged when dead. Fortunately enough, the mower takes care of this for you. It will automatically return to its charging station when necessary. The Gardena also requires minimal cleaning, but we recommend checking it at least once a week to ensure there isn’t any grass or debris building up.

The overall design of the R80Li is excellent, as well. It’s completely weatherproof so you won’t have to worry about it getting ruined in the rain. However, this also means it doesn’t include a rain sensor that will tell the mower to return to its charging station. While the mower won’t get ruined, its cutting efficacy will diminish with wet grass. All of the programming and operation can be performed directly on the body of the mower with an easy-to-use LED display and keypad, though we were disappointed by the lack of remote control and mobile app. When it comes to security, the Gardena features all of the standard options like a PIN lock and alarm, but it also features an installation lock, which prevents the mower from being used with any other installation than your own. WHY WE LIKE IT: If you want a robot lawnmower with more options for cutting the grass of varying lengths, look no further than this model. It features efficient, offset blades and a large cutting height range (1.6” to 3.9”) so you can rest easy knowing it will cut efficiently without your attention.

  • No GPS mapping
  • No professional installation available

[/su_list][/su_box][/su_column]
[/su_row]

The Worx WR153 Landroid L is an affordable robotic lawn mower that doesn’t sacrifice too many features to give you efficient and powerful cutting power. It’s user-friendly with an excellent smartphone app that gives you more control over how the mower runs. You can use the app to check how far along the mower is in its progress and start or stop the unit. The mower also includes a rain sensor that sends the model back to its home when a storm starts. The only thing we wish the unit had included would be the GPS mapping that some of the newer options feature.

The Landroid L also features reliable safety features that keep your mower protected from theft. This model includes the “Find My Landroid” GPs cellular technology. This option notifies you via the app if the mower is removed from your lawn and allows you to track it down. The Worx robotic lawn mower is also incredibly easy to use, with both onboard manual controls and programming options via the app. Installation is fairly easy, but it can be time-consuming during your first use, which makes the lack of professional installation options more disappointing. For the rest of your yard work, it might be interesting to look into the best electric chainsaw.

How We Decided

When we first fired up the robot lawn mowers we purchased, we immediately started testing them based on their cutting power and efficiency. We specifically tested the mowers in small- to middle-sized lawns and ranked them according to their ability to efficiently cut the grass in a timely, unobtrusive manner. We awarded bonus points to units that can handle steeper slopes with wider cutting decks.

Next, we rated lawn mowers higher if they were easy to use and easy to program. The best robotic lawnmowers provide both onboard controls and smartphone controls. We awarded bonus points to options that could be fully customized and programmed manually on the mower or via the app. We also favored products that give you Wi-Fi and GPS access to your mower so you don’t have to be within Bluetooth range to control it.

Finally, we looked at safety and anti-theft features. The best mowers offer comprehensive protection against theft. Although every option on our list includes some kind of anti-theft functionality, we preferred options that offer more than one protection. Features like GPS tracking and alarms made us rate mowers higher.

Best Robot Lawn Mower Buyer’s Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Lawn Type and Size
For starters, it’s important to understand that not every lawn is a good fit for a robotic lawnmower. If you have a huge yard with tons of obstacles and steep slopes, it’s probably best to stick with a more traditional approach to landscaping. Most residential robot lawn mowers can handle yards up to 1.5 acres. With that being said, let’s take a look at some core mower features and how they compare to different lawn sizes. First, the cutting deck width of your robot lawn mower plays a big part in how efficiently and quickly it can cut your lawn. As a general rule of thumb, purchase a mower with a larger cutting deck if you have a larger yard and a smaller one if you have a smaller yard. And while we don’t include any of these models on this list, you can even purchase a commercial robotic lawn mower for professional landscaping purposes. The mower’s wheels are also an important consideration to make in comparison to the obstacles in your yard. If you have hills and slopes, we recommend purchasing a mower with larger wheels. However, if you have lots of obstacles like flower beds and trees, then you might want to consider an option with smaller wheels for better maneuverability.
  2. Programming Options
Like robot vacuums, robot lawn mowers typically offer some kind of programmability so you can customize the way it cuts your grass. The best robotic lawnmowers offer different program options that allow you to customize schedules for the mower to cut different zones in your yard. This programming allows you to cut the grass throughout the week for a more even cut.
  3. Noise Levels
Gas mowers are incredibly loud, but robot lawn mowers are typically much quieter because they run on battery power instead of combustion engines. As such, you usually don’t need to worry about noise levels with robot lawnmowers. Most options output a maximum of 60 decibels of noise, but some of the more heavy-duty models can get louder than that. If you opt for a louder mower, be sure you run it during the day so as to not annoy your neighbors and your own household.
  4. Ease of Installation
Installing a robot lawnmower in your yard involves burying a perimeter wire around the area you want to be mowed. Installing this boundary wire can get complicated sometimes, so it’s important to find an option from a company that provides easy-to-follow installation instructions or even video tutorials. You may even find a company that will do the installation for you, but this is often an extra cost and is rare to find.
  5. Smartphone App
Some robot lawn mowers feature an accompanying smartphone app, which allows you to change schedules and program options from the palm of your hand. Some of the more advanced options may include remote control functionality through your smartphone, but this isn’t common.
  6. Anti-theft Systems
Since you keep your robot lawn mower outside, you may be worried about it getting stolen at some point. Fortunately, most models have anti-theft features that prevent your mower from being used if taken from your lawn. Some mowers only require a PIN to be entered to start again, but more expensive models will feature GPS tracking so you can find your mower if it gets stolen.

Robot Lawn Mower FAQs

Are robot lawn mowers any good?

Yes, robot lawn mowers are excellent yard machines, especially if you don’t have time to mow your lawn yourself. They’re convenient and powerful, and they can cut your lawn really well. However, as with any other smart products, robot lawn mowers do have some drawbacks to consider. They’re expensive and can be complicated to set up.

How long do robotic mowers last?

Since robot lawn mowers have a charging station, they can technically run infinitely until your lawn has been completely mowed. When it comes to total battery life, you can expect your robot lawn mower’s battery to last upwards of six years.

How does robot lawn mower work?

Have you ever experienced a Roomba robot vacuum cleaner? Robot lawn mowers work in a very similar way. They randomly traverse your yard, cutting grass along the way, until they run into the invisible barrier that you install. Their cutting-edge technology helps prevent them from operating in the rain and from overcutting your grass.

Do robot lawn mowers collect grass?

For now, all of the robot lawn mowers available today are mulching mowers only, which means they don’t collect grass in a bag. Instead, they cut the grass into fine clippings and redistribute them back onto your lawn. This is great because the grass can decompose over your lawn and spread nutrients back into your soil and make for a healthier lawn.

Who are the best robot lawn mower manufacturers?

We included several renowned robot lawn mower manufacturers on the above list, such as Worx. Some high-quality models that nearly made our list include the iRobot Lawn Mower and the Honda Robot Lawn Mower.
