A great upgrade from the original Sony UBP-X800, the UBP-X800M2 comes with everything ranging from Dolby Vision as well as HDR10 support. You get a good amount of streaming service availability and paired with compatibility with older disc types and audio formats, you can view content with a much better upscaled picture quality. All in all, at a pretty great price, this might just be one of the best Blu Ray players you can get right now.

Performance
Starting with the compatibility of the UBP-X800M2, it can play HDR content thanks to the HDR10 support whilst also being able to play Dolby Vision content. And while this is great, the Sony UBP-X800M2 comes with a strange switching issue which many customers have raised in their reviews. Instead of automatically switching between HDR and Dolby Vision depending on the disc playback, the DVD player will instead require you to go to settings and manually change it every time you switch between a HDR and Dolby Vision disc. On the other hand, when it comes to playing anything other than Ultra HD Blu-Ray discs, even anything 1080p, the Sony X800M2 will automatically upscale the image quality, giving you a better overall viewing experience. As for audio compatibility, you can even play anything in DVD-Audio or SACD format as well as anything in and out of the High Resolution Audio Formats like FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, DSD, AAC, WMA, HEAAC, LPCM, Vorbis and MP3. If the audio files happen to be high resolution, the Sony Blu-Ray player will use the DSEE HX upscaling technology to upscale the audio quality to almost the same level as that of high-resolution audio.
Apart from that, paired with Dolby Digital and DTS track, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master audio as well as Dolby Atmos and DTS X playing capability, the Sony UBP-X800M2 Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player will provide you with a clear and crisp sound quality adding to your overall viewing experience. Coming back to the picture quality, the UHD Blu-Ray Player does support Dolby Vision and comes with the more reserved and natural color tone that Sony Blu-Ray players tend to have which itself is great but not the same as the more vibrant and emphasised colour quality of the Panasonic DMP-UB900, which however supports neither Dolby Vision or HDR(High Dynamic Range)10. Aside from that, with the dual HDMI ports one of which supports both video and audio and the other only audio, you won’t have to sacrifice the picture quality in the case that you have an older AV Receiver. You also get an ethernet for wired internet connections as well as coaxial digital output port. And while there are no analog output ports, you get a pretty great digital audio quality via HDMI, thanks to the provided 18Gbps HDMI cable.
The Sony UBP-X800M2 Blu-Ray disc player also comes with a USB port to play content through an external drive while the on-board dual band WiFi connectivity lets you easily stream content through the three apps provided. You can watch Netflix, Amazon Prime Video as well as Youtube, the former two of which don’t support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision respectively in this player Sony has released. This is considerably less than what is available with the cheaper X700 but being greater than what is offered by the Samsung UBD-K8500 and with the Review Sony UBP-X800M2 has received from users, it would most certainly make for a pretty great addition to your home theater.
Design
Measuring to be 17 x 2 x 10.5 Inches in terms of dimensions and weighing about 3.8kg, the Sony UBP-X800M2 isn’t the most compact or lightweight device out there. It comes with a complete plastic surface with a rough finish, which makes sure that it doesn’t easily catch onto fingerprints. With the power and eject buttons on the right upfront, the disc tray hidden behind a drop down front panel, USB connector on the front and the rest of outputs on the back, the Sony UBP-X800M2 has a pretty minimalistic but decent design. It doesn’t stand out as something aesthetic, but with a good build quality it is both durable and functional.
As for the plastic remote that comes with it, while it does actually feel sort of cheap, which is an understandable compromise, it functions well with a wide range of buttons( a dedicated one for netflix) and prompt responses. Unfortunately, you don’t get a backlit keypad on it nor a display on the player itself.
Value
Priced at about $380, the Sony UBP-X800M2 is a great upgrade from the original X800 released months ago from it. It comes with all the upgrades necessary, fixing issues that had been reported by users beforehand. And while it may not support HDR10+ or allow you to play games like the Xbox One S, the UBP-X800M2 makes for one of the best value Blu-Ray Players out there. But if you’re on more of a budget, check out the Sony UBP-X700 which is a much more affordable yet still capable Blu-Ray Player.
