Nadia is not hyped about turning 36. She is more concerned about her missing cat Oatmeal. As the night progresses, she randomly runs into her cat on the street, but when she tries to reach it, she runs into all kinds of accidents. The accidents get so wild that she mysteriously ends up back at her birthday party feeling overwhelmed with Deja Vu. This is a dark comedy series from our Best Shows On Netflix. Why We Like It – Russian Doll Review

“Natasha Lyonne stars as Nadia Vulvokov, a 36-year-old woman reliving her birthday party on a time loop. This series feels like Groundhog Day. Nadia realizes that she is reliving one particular night, and she tries to do things differently to change the outcome of the day.

Pros
  • Abstract plot
  • Nadia’s wittiness
Cons
  • Redundancy of the plot might get old for you

Performance

Natasha Lyonne plays a great Nadia. Nadia is usually one step ahead of the curve, so to see her get thrown into a time loop and be thrown off is entertaining. It will be interesting to see how she does when she starts to get the hang of her predicament. During her repetitive night, she will often run into Alan Zaveri (Charlie Barnett), Maxine (Greta Lee), and Mike Kershaw (Jeremy Bobb) After this comedy, keep the laughs going with the animated comedy Big Mouth.

Design

Leslye Headland co-created this dark comedy series. It is based in New York, so there’s no telling what kind of situations Nadia is going to get herself into while in the city. The series is centered on Nadia as she replays the same day over and over again. If this redundant type of plot does not interest you, there are other series with nonrepetitive plots like Breaking Bad.

Value

This series has an imaginative plot like Groundhog Day. Nadia is a great character to throw in a time loop because as the plot thickens she starts to be very vocal with everyone about her feelings towards being stuck on the same day. She is bound to get the hang of her ordeal soon, and when that happens no doubt she will be having some fun with it. After this series, feel free to watch something with the kids like Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Russian Doll Review Wrap Up

Russian Doll is a dark comedy about Nadia reliving her birthday party a million different ways. There is only one season to catch up, so why not see if Nadia is able to break her curse or be forced to live in her time loop forever.
