When it calls itself a “Google Home Hub,” it truly means it, providing loads of smart home control. With a simple command, “Hey Google,” you can make calls, check the weather, or link up with Google Photos and have it double as a digital photo frame. With its smart speakers, you can easily jam out to music on, say, YouTube Music or Google Play Music.
It can also be a home security display. With compatible security cameras, steam live feed to the Google Nest Hub. Much of these features can be controlled through the Google Home app.
Unfortunately, the Nest Hub is one of the most restrictive smart home devices compared to something like the Lenovo Smart Display or Amazon Echo Show. This is because it’s only limited to Google devices; Amazon’s Echo Dot is out of the question.
Design
The Google Nest Hub has a very pleasing design, built with a 7-inch display. That’s big enough to stream YouTube videos while you cook. The speakers are built around the stand itself. With ambient EQ, sensors will adapter to the ambient lighting and adjust screen brightness accordingly.
What its design doesn’t incorporate is a camera, unlike other smart displays like the Echo Show 5, which excludes the option to make videos. If you want a camera, you’ll have to upgrade to the Google Nest Hub Max.
Value
The Google Nest Hub has a lot of features packed into its small dimensions. Given how well it can fit into all kinds of roles—voice calling, a photo frame, or just a nice little smart home hub—it has excellent value. This is especially true given how affordable it is. And since it’s easy to get all set up, you’ll have it controlling your home in no time. But this is only true if you like Google considering the restrictions. It pairs wonderfully with a Nest Learning Thermostat.
