Bike Spike: Lo-Jack for Your Bike

Even the best bikes are not safe from theft. In the US alone, over 250,000 bikes are stolen every year. To call it a pandemic might be an understatement. To prevent bike theft I suggest you use a combination of a U-Lock and metal rope. While the latter deterrent might be superfluous, it may just be enough to dissuade a would be thief from nabbing your wheels. But in the event it does get nabbed, wouldn’t you love to be able to track it down and seek vengeance on your assailant?

And now you can thanks to the Bike Spike. The Bike Spike is effectively Lo-Jack for you bicycle. It’s a small black box that integrates into a water bottle holder so thieves are none the wiser. Using what they’re calling the world’s smallest GPS chipset with a built-in antenna, an on-board accelerometer, and a connection to a global cellular network, you can track your bike everywhere it roams.

In addition to piece of mind (i.e. knowing where your bike is), the Spike Bike can also be used to track your workouts, digitally lock your bike (if it leaves a geofence you’ll get a notice), send a notification to emergency contacts if you get in an accident, and keep tabs on children.

As you’ve probably assumed there are accompanying iOS and Android apps that allow you to track your bike in real-time, as well as view and share vital stats from your workouts. However, how fast that data is delivered depends on the data plan you opt into, which will come with each Bike Spike for up to 1 or 2 years.

The ‘Urban Commuter’ plan covers the cellular data provided by our carrier partners. It is an essential piece of the BikeSpike, empowering the device to report your daily rides and assist with recovery when stolen.

The ‘Pro Plan’ gives you all of the benefits of the ‘Urban Commuter’ plan plus the power to activate live updates during your training and racing. It also allows you to publish your ride and create public races against other users. The Pro Plan also unlocks essential tools for coaches and fleet management operations.

The Bike Spike is looking to fund their project via Kickstarter.  If you want one, you’ll need to invest at least $149, though that option is now sold out.
