If you’re browsing the market for a GoPro alternative, an action camera that’s packed with performance, the Akaso V50 Pro is making one strong case as the best travel camera or the finest digital camera for travel for the job. Not only is it portable and compact, but it can also capture high-quality photos and 4K videos, while being packaged with tons of accessories. Why We Like It – Akaso V50 Pro Review

The Akaso V50 Pro makes a strong case over any action camera GoPro can muster, with 4K video resolution and 20MP photos, packed into a compact and portable design.

Pros
  • 20 megapixels; 4K video
  • Packaged with additional accessories
  • Great performance for price
Cons
  • Isn’t waterproof without waterproof case
  • Storage limited to 64GB micro SD cards

Performance

It was surprising to experience the performance the Akaso V50 Pro has to offer. For starters, it’s packing a 20-megapixel image sensor, going toe-to-toe with the Canon PowerShot ELPH 180 in terms of image quality. And with its image stabilization working overtime, photos were almost always in focus.

The same can be said when we reviewed Akaso’s video resolution. For such a low price, we weren’t expecting 4K, and it even captures 30 frames per second, which is six more frames than the Panasonic Lumix FZ80. You’ll have lots of fun with the time-lapse capturing—especially for action-packed moments. It just may be better than some of the leading Panasonic digital cameras.

Design

You might be wondering where all the buttons are on the Akaso V50 Pro. Everything’s done via touch screen, except the power and shutter buttons. It’s 2-inches, which is particularly large, but it isn’t too tiny either. For another medium-sized device, check out our Fujifilm XF10 review.

There’s ports for an external microphone, HDMI, and an SD card slot, though it’s only limited to 64GB micro SDs. Unfortunately, the Akaso V50 isn’t waterproof, technically speaking. Only when it’s safe in its waterproof housing. Check out the Olympus TG-5 for a true waterproof camera, capable of withstanding depths of 50 feet.

Value

As far as action cameras go, the Akaso V50 is packed with value. Not only does it perform particularly well, but it’s also bundled with accessory kits for various situations, like a remote control wristband, among others. All that for $120? It’s an easy purchase to make.

And if you have a particular fondness for the environment, your purchase of the Akaso V50 Pro SE—which is identical to the V50 Pro aside from a “Leave No Trace” logo—will see a portion of the sales go to the campaign itself.

Akaso V50 Pro Review Wrap Up

When you’re knee-deep in action, the Akaso V50 Pro isn’t going to let you down—just remember to bring the waterproof case if you’re diving. While a 64GB micro SD card limit is a bummer, it more than makes up for it with its 20-megapixel sensor, 4K video quality, and additional accessories.
