It’s useful to have a lighter on your person, even though fewer and fewer of us actually smoke. Sometimes you need it to just cheat when you’re putting together a campfire. Sometimes you need it to get a grill lit. And sometimes you’re just an insane gadget and multitool fetishist like yours truly who has to have every conceivable multipurpose tool on his person at all times, because you never know when you’re going to need a pair of pliers, or a wire-cutter, or a wrench. Regardless, the watch lighter is here for you.
This is one of those cases where it’s really the union of the two that makes the gadget. By itself, the watch is no great shakes: It’s battery-powered with a wound quartz movement and a leather band, like a lot of low-cost watches you find in department stores and the like. Yes, it is a fully functioning watch, unlike some “disguised” items that don’t actually work and, worse, obviously don’t work. And the lighter itself is nothing special either: It’s your standard butane lighter, the workhorse found in gas stations and ashtrays across the country, with the striker on the left-hand side of the watch face.
The gold, of course, is when you put the two together; the flame comes out of the top of the watch, allowing you to light anything while it’s still on your wrist. Or, of course, you can take it off and get things going that way. The butane tank is on the back to make transport of this particular item easier.
OK, so you can’t wear it to an airport unless you want to be bomb-squaded, and Bond’s gadgets have evolved well beyond the lighting of cigarettes when you least expect it. But until they manage to cram a plasma torch into a Rolex for real, you can at least impress people by commanding fire out of your watch face. It’s currently $25 from Fancy.
