Why We Like It – SOG Tomahawk Throwing Axe

Versatility is valued with this axe. Take it into the wilderness and gather firewood or take advantage of its balance and toss it at a few targets.

Pros
  • Balanced for throwing
  • Built-in hammer and pick
  • Lightweight at 19 oz
Cons
  • Chopping trees and splitting logs is secondary

Performance

Throwing the SOG Tomahawk Throwing Axe feels natural and it feels right. Part of its success comes from the balance. Tomahawks swing faster naturally and far more accurate than your traditional throwing axe, making them excellent choices for throwing competitions, too. And when you aren’t throwing your axe, you can chop down a few small trees and split small logs. Of course, the Fiskars Super Splitting Axe is far better at splitting wood but it’s too large to carry around naturally, nor is it balanced for throwing.

Design

The other part of SOG Throwing Hawks success comes from design. To get that razor-sharp blade, 420 stainless steel was used in its 2-inch blade length, which is a high carbon steel. The stainless steel blade and hand forged, it’s then sharpened to a point. However, this is not a full tang axe; it has a nylon handle attached to the blade. Like any axe, you’ll have to keep the axe head sharp and the nylon sheath will help you accomplish that.

Value

The SOG Tomahawk Throwing Axe is a high quality cold steel blade and just perfect for axe throwing competitions, given its balance and performance. But it might not be exactly what you’re looking for. You really want it though. Thankfully, SOG has other throwing tomahawk axes other than SOG Tactical such as SOG Voodoo Hawk Mini and the SOG FastHawk. There’s such a wide variety of choices that it might just be some of the best throwing axes for versatility, easily outclassing the Coleman Camp Axe in every way. Alternatively, the Husqvarna 26 Wooden Multi-Purpose Axe has a dozen options.

SOG Tomahawk Throwing Axe Wrap Up

The SOG Tomahawk Throwing Axe, contrary to its name, is more of a camping axe with the added benefit of being balanced for throwing when the itch arises. This is seen by its built-in hammer and pick, lighter weight and emphasis on general use. It isn’t the best at chopping or splitting wood, but it gets the job done.
