Ditching the landline is a no brainer for generation X or younger, but for others it might be a bit too fleeting of an experience to go cold turkey. So if you can’t completely give up the idea of having a stand alone phone for calls, but are willing to forgoe the coversations that are carried over copper lines, you might appreciate Philips’ S10 premium handset.
The S10 not only phyiscally resembles many of today’s smartphones, but includes what appears to be a comparable interface, allowing you to access a call log and phonebook with up to 2000 contacts (6000 numbers). That said, it doesn’t include a traditional land line jack. Instead it connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and uses your carrier’s minutes to make and receive calls – something Philips is calling MobileLink technology. The screen measures 3.5-inches big and supports up to 16 million colors. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to watch a movie or listen to music on it, but it is compatible with Bluetooth headsets, as well as 3.5mm corded headsets. A host of options allows you to bar outgoing numbers as well as lock down the phonebook if you have a friend or spouse with a penchant for snooping. Of course your smartphone will need to be within about 30 meters of the stand (probably more), but thanks to DECT technology, the S10 can travel up to 50 meters from the base station and supposedly not lose its signal.
Sorry, no word on a price, but we’re confident that the premium finishes, which includes metal and presumambly glass, will set you back more than the convenience it is worth.
