If you’re in the market for a bike lock that’s not too expensive but still provides the level of security you need for your bike, then the OnGuard range of U locks would be a great choice to consider. The OnGuard brute STD 8001 to be specific is a very capable U lock thanks to its 16 mm hardened steel shackle, which is thick enough to make a thief think twice about trying to get away with your bike. The OnGuard Brute bike lock also scores an impressive 97 on the Sold Secure security rating, which places it in the same league as the Kryptonite New York range of locks that are widely popular. Does it have what it takes to be the best bike lock for your security needs? Get to the end of this review to find out.

Why We Like It – Onguard Brute STD 8001

The OnGuard Brute STD is a mid-level priced bike lock that is half the price of market leading locks, but offers double the value. Its quatro deadbolt design makes it incredibly difficult for a thief to tamper with, and the five stainless steel keys that you get makes it far better than other bike locks that only offer two or three. You can compare OnGuard with another bike lock by reading our review on how the Linka is a smart bike lock with new ideas.

Performance

The locking mechanism that you’ll find on the OnGuard Brute STD 8001 is quite different from most top tier bike locks. Unlike the Via Velo Bike U Lock with Cable, the 8001 STD employs a quatro deadbolt design for its steel shackle, meaning it’s shackle locks on four sides instead of two. This makes it a lot more effective than the typical cable lock, since you would have to use something strong like an angle grinder to cut through it. Design

The OnGuard Brute STD lock comes covered with a rubber coating that makes it waterproof, and therefore more durable over sustained use. The hardened steel shackle lock measures about 155mm x 202mm x 16.8mm, making it a standard length U lock. Unfortunately, you won’t get that much color choice with the Brute lock as it only comes in a black and yellow color combination, which is similar to the color option you’ll get with the Kryptonite New York Standard Heavy Duty Bicycle U Lock.

Value

One thing that really makes the OnGuard bike lock stand out is the fact that it comes with five stainless steel keys. This is two more than you’ll get with the Sigtuna Bike Locks Heavy-Duty U Lock with Shackle, making it great especially for cyclists who don’t trust themselves enough not to lose their keys often. Out of the five keys one comes with an LED light for better visibility at night. Also included in the packaging is a mounting bracket which allows you to mount the lock wherever you will find appropriate when you’re riding.
