Harmon Kardon’s SoundStick speaker system drew headlines when it first appeared many years ago. And it continues to be the point of focus, at least in the New York City Museum of Modern Art, where it has become a “permanent fixture” – in what capacity we don’t know. The first iteration of the forward looking speaker system was of the wired ilk, and rightfully so as when it first arrived Airplay didn’t exist, and the iPhone was simply an idea. Fast forward 12 years (yes, the first ones launched at Apple’s WWDC in July 2000) and today we’re happy to introduce the arrival of the wireless version.
Harmon Kardon’s original design was clearly complementary to the Apple’s of a generation before, and like all good roots they haven’t completely abandoned their heritage. Nevertheless, this speaker system has been updated with wireless functionality. In addition to offering Bluetooth connectivity for streaming tunes directly from any compatible device, the satellite speakers, which are replete with 4 drivers each, are also of the wireless ilk and can be placed through out a room free of the confines of wires, with the exception of a power cord. The same will apply for the subwoofer, which sports a 6-inch downward firing woofer, which we can only assume is in addition to the SoundSticks satellite speaker’s 40-watts of juice. If you prefer to go old school there is a 3.5mm AUX input for those with dumb phones or older generation iPods, as well as independent touch controls for changing volume.
