Go Pro just significantly upped the anty in terms of wearable cameras with the launch of the all new Go Pro Hero – a significantly, yet some what imperceivable upgrade to their product line.
The new Hero3 line is composed of three new cameras, all of which can capture full 1080p HD video at 30fps, and include built-in Wifi allowing anyone with a compatible Go Pro WiFi remote, iOS, or Android device to control it wirelessly. Each Go Pro weighs just 2.6oz, making it not just 25% lighter than the previous iteration, but 30% smaller. Included with each model is their waterproof housing, enabling the Hero 3 to take on any inclement weather, and dive to a depth of 197-feet.
At the top of the range is the Black Edition. This is the most robust of the three, which is reflected in its ability to capture ultra-high resolution footage at 2.7kp/24p and 4kp/12fps (yes, 4k HD video). Needless to say, for what you gain in HD, you lose in frame rate. Conversely, the Go Pro Hero3 Black Edition is able to capture solid slow-mo footage at a variety of speeds, though in this case resolution is compromised in favor of frames per second; 1080p-60, 720p-120, WVGA-240, 960p-100 and 1440p-48. Go Pro has also improved photo performance by a three fold, with the ability to snap 12-megapixel photos at 30fps, with two times better light performance by comparison to previous models. The audio system has also seen some improvements, allowing surfers and those alike to capture the wave’s roar as it swells over their head. The Black Edition ships October 31st for $399.99 and includes a WiFi remote.
Following the Black Edition is the Silver Edition. It too boasts the same low light performance, yet caps out at 1080p at 30fps, and captures 11-megapixel photos at a max frame rate of 10. It too sports built-in WiFi, but doesn’t include a remote or the ability to record ultra high resolution video. It will ship presumably on the same day, though at the time of this posting the link to the product page was broken. We can tell you that it will cost $299.99.
Last on the list is the White Edition. But don’t let that fool you. In addition to built-in WiFi, this model can also capture 1080p HD video at 30 frames per second, as well as a multitude of slow-mo options. For those that don’t care about nabbing still photos this might be the ideal model, as it’s cheaper at just $199.99, yet results in the caveat of mere 5-megapixel images at 3 frames per second. It is set to ship October 22nd.
