Performance

These waterproof matches are good if you are going for a camping trip with the family, but if it’s a survival situation, you’ll definitely want something higher quality like UCO Stormproof All Weather Matches and Case. These matches are technically waterproof, but they will have trouble lighting if fully submerged. When dry you will have no problem getting them to ignite, but if they get wet you will want to dry them out (as much as possible) before use. Also, the wood is brittle so you may break a few trying to start a fire.

Design

The side of each box has a striker surface. The matches combined with the waterproof striker are perfect for workers. Safety matches cannot light accidentally (must be lit on the side of the box) so you won’t have to worry about them flaming up randomly like “Strike-Anywhere” matches. Each match has a waterproof tip, but the wooden stick is not waterproof, which is where you might run into trouble if they get submerged for any length of time. The packaging itself has a “vintage” look, with a small person lighting a fire in the rain over a green background.

Value

At only $7 for 400 matches, these are perfect for any no-stress non-survival situation where you might want to start a fire. Although they claim to be “waterproof”, a more accurate description would be “water-resistant.” Still, they are better than regular matches which are rendered useless after even a drop of water. For the casual user, these will be a great purchase, but a survivalist will want to purchase something more reliable like Swiss Safe 5-in1 Fire Starter All Weather Matches.

Coghlans Waterproof Matches Vintage Wrap Up

Coghlans Waterproof Matches met our expectations, given their $7 price tag. You get 400 matches which can be lit after getting wet and don’t have to worry about them randomly going off as they can only be lit using the striking surface. Although the wood used in the sticks isn’t the highest quality, and these aren’t the most reliable, they none-the-less are the perfect budget purchase for your next family camping trip.
