Performance

The Buffalo Ministation Extreme NFC portable hard drive offers excellent performance while supporting both Mac and Windows systems. The USB 3.0 interface enables fast data transfer with maximum speeds up to 5.0 Gbps. Another nice feature with this external hard drive is that it supports NFC. An NFC smart card is included, which allows you to unlock files with a tap. The built-in 7200rpm hard disk is fast enough for all kinds of tasks. However, data hoarders will prefer the Seagate STGY80000 External Hard Drive with 8TB of storage.

Design

The design of the Buffalo Ministation Extreme NFC resembles a book. The portable hard drive comes with a built-in USB cable that offers USB 3.0 connection speeds. It’s nicely tucked into the body of the hard drive. The Ministation Extreme NFC features military spec shock protection, which absorbs shocks if dropped, and keeps the disc safe. It also gets IPX3 water and IP5X dust ratings. If you want a simpler looking and sleeker portable drive, try the Western Digital Elements External Hard Drive, which also features 2TB of storage.

Value

If you value security over other features, the Buffalo Ministation Extreme NFC is a great hard drive to have. The NFC key card feature for unlocking files on the drive will be very useful if your drive is stolen. It also comes with 256-bit AES hardware level encryption, backup utility, military level shock protection, and the dust/water resistance rating. The hard drive can withstand drops from up to 12 meters. However, the Toshiba Canvio Basics External Hard Drive can offer up to 4TB storage, easier setup, and a slimmer profile.

Buffalo Ministation Extreme NFC Wrap Up

The Buffalo Ministation Extreme NFC is for those who need to store sensitive data on an external drive. Features like hardware encryption, NFC key card, protection against the elements, and in-built USB cable, makes it one of the best external hard drives. The setup process on Mac could’ve been better as it requires formatting, but that’s not really a deal breaker.
