How We Decided

There are many power converters out there, all boasting of high end features. In order to narrow our list down to the seven best products, we ran a bunch of converters through the wringer, attempting to power a variety of gadgets and appliances in a variety of circumstances, stopping short, however, of actually traveling to Europe or China.

Essentially, we wanted to make sure they powered what they said they could power, be it smartphone or hairdryer, while keeping an eye on any potential danger to the gadget being juiced. On that note, we often plugged in more wattage than what was recommended, to ensure the automatic shutdown mechanisms worked as advertised. We also thoroughly tested any built-in surge protectors or overload units.

Other than that, we were looking for high end products with compact form factors, especially with items that were intended for travel abroad. We wanted to make sure this list contained at least one product to suit everybody’s needs, no matter where they were traveling. As such, we made sure to include one converter, the TRYACE 2019 Upgraded 2000W 220V to 110V Voltage Converter, that was appropriate for use in countries that support 60 Hz, such as Peru and South Korea.

Power Converter Buying Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Converting, Adapting and Inverting
You are going to want to find the right product to suit your needs and, in order to do that, you are going to want to take a crash course on the differences between converting, adapting and inverting a power signal. The big difference between an adapter and a converter is electricity. Adapters exist to simply help the plugs on your gadgets fit into (adapt to the shape of) foreign outlets. A converter, on the other hand, actually changes the voltage found in an outlet to match that of your devices. Many items on the above list, like our top pick, are both adapters and converters, though this is not true of every above product, as solo adapters tend to be smaller and therefore better suited for stowing in a bag while traveling. In short, if you are looking to just charge up your phone or tablet, a solo adapter should be fine. If you are looking to juice up hair dryers and other appliances, you are going to want to go with a converter or a hybrid device. Inverters are essentially the opposite of converters, transforming DC to AC voltage. These are highly useful in vehicles, as a car’s battery emits a DC voltage and needs to be transformed to help power gadgets.
  2. Check What Countries the Product is Optimized for
Converters and adapters help to maximize coverage by sticking to a series of standardized socket designs that are used in the majority of countries. Any of the above converters and adapters should work fine in most countries, with several exceptions. While most countries on the planet use 50Hz as their AC frequency, some use the harder to convert 60Hz. Peru, South Korea, Nicaragua, and the Philippines, among others, all use 60Hz as their AC frequency. If you are traveling to one of these countries, be sure to pick up a converter, like the TRYACE model, that works with this frequency. Italy is another exception. Most converters transform America’s standard 110 volts into 220 volts, which is standard in the rest of the world. Italy, however, uses a standard voltage of 230 volts. Many converters on the above list will work in Italy but require the purchase of an additional power plug adapter.
  3. Safety Features
Safety features are of paramount importance when choosing a power converter or adapter. Look for products that offer, at minimum, built-in surge protection. Additional safety features include flame-resistant materials, cooling units, LED indicators and plug locks. All of the above products come packed to the gills with many of these gadget-saving features.

Travel Adapter FAQs

Why is Italy different?

You’ll notice, reading the above list, that many of the products we featured do not immediately work in Italy. This is because the country uses a standard voltage of 230 volts, with many converters working to transform American voltage, 110, to the rest of the standard used by the rest of the world, 220.

Why are Dyson hairdryers often excluded?

You may also have noticed that most of the above converters are not rated to work with Dyson brand hair dryers. While the company makes a quality product, they are extremely power hungry, often exceeding the limits of even the most versatile power converter.
