What’s blue and drops its top all over Los Angeles? The answer: our 2015 Audi R8 Spyder. Yes sir-ree. I got to drive this bad boy of a car for 6 days. And needless to say it was pure bliss, save for the fat kid at In and Out who started sh*t with me because I supposedly cut him off. Yes folks, a car like this draws attention, and while the R8 has been around for many years – Audi will refresh it next year (hopefully) – people regard you differently, largely because they know it’s expensive, loud and fast. If you love reading about cars, you’ll also want to read our 2014 Nissan GT-R review. But in the same vein on lookers hold high regard for this car and those that drive them. Surprisingly, I was only asked a few questions when it came to the R8, but there is still, despite the car’s age, no denying the gazes that are garnered from street corners and cars. Why?
Well for starters it’s a mid engined car. Which plops it into supercar status. Debatable by some, by I think, despite the less than $200,000 price tag, the R8 is a Supercar. And not just because of the way it looks. But because of the way it drives and sounds. There are two engines to choose from; a V8 or V10. The V10 is the way to go, as it guzzles 5.2l of fuel, purrs like a kitten when idle, roars like a lion when it’s angry, and hums like a porn star when it’s cruising at just about any speed.

But what makes the R8 Spyder a joy to drive, also makes it impractical. The interior space is limited, and although it could accommodate my 6′ 2″ athletic frame (read: skinny) that’s about it. Oh, and a passenger. There is little room for anything in the cabin of the car, save for a few small items. And the frunk, as it’s called, it’s good for a single pullmen or a few overnight bags. So “toy” is probably an apt description.
Those shortcomings aside, though, and the R8 Spyder is just about as close to a wet dream as I’ve come. Honestly, I’m not sure what that entirely means, but it’s all thumbs up from where I sit. However, if I had to take issue, it would be with the lack of Bluetooth audio playback despite the fact phone calls over the R8 Spyder’s audio system are allowed. Fortunately, the 2015 version comes outfitted with a Lightning cable (mind didn’t work), but who plugs in their phone save for charging it (note: there are no USB plugs in the R8 Spyder).
