Performance
This unit doubles as both an air conditioner and a fan. Speed is adjustable (with three different settings plus auto mode) and operates fairly quietly around 52-58 dB. This is similar to the Midea 6,000 BTU A/C, which is quieter than a refrigerator. The air conditioner can be controlled remotely via the LG ThinQ app, but it’s also compatible with Amazon Alexa & Google Assistant. If you need to cool a large space you will need to make sure your window AC can handle a large cooling area. This model is suitable for smaller rooms (up to 340 sq. feet), but for larger spaces, the LG LW1816ER is a better option. Moreover, another unit that’s perfect for anyone living in a relatively small area is the Luma Comfort EC110S which is also very affordable.
Energy Efficiency
You won’t have to spend a lot on electricity to run this wall unit. LG appears to have focused on energy efficiency for this model, so despite including smart ThinQ technology and being WiFi-enabled (like the LG LW1017ERSM, the device still does very well by Energy Star standards. The Energy Guide awards this AC unit an EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating of 12.0 and estimated the yearly cost of running this air conditioner will be around $65. This is excellent because the annual operating costs of similar models run from $65 up to $127. But, pit LG air conditioners against Hisense air conditioners before you make a buying decision.
Filtration
Like most modern LG air conditioners, the LW8017ERSM has an easy-clean air filter. This means that the air filter can be removed from the front of the unit, cleaned, dried, and put back into the AC – no need to replace the filter! Another benefit is that you won’t have to take the unit out of the window to reach the filter. Even though the unit is much lighter than other models, including the LG KW1517IVSM, we appreciate the easy access to the filter.
Durability
Similar to the LG LW8016ER 8,000 BTU, the LW8017ERSM is 57 lbs. of plastic and metal. The front of the device is plastic with vents, buttons, and a small screen in the upper right-hand corner of the device. Nothing sticks out, so you shouldn’t have any problem with small parts catching on to things or breaking. Mounting securely in the window, setting up, and using this device is simple enough, but it’s not ideal if you plan on moving the AC around a lot. If that’s the case, you might want to go with a portable AC unit instead.
Value
$319.99 is the current going rate for this AC unit, which is slightly on the high side of similar models (but those models don’t have ThinQ technology!). You will be on your own when it comes to returns, but shipping the unit to your house is free. LG gives you a one-year warranty on parts and labor for the LW8017ERSM, which is useful. However, based on the score of 4.3 out of 5-stars based on 6,279 reviews, it seems unlikely (though possible) that you will actually need the warranty.
